Title: ...Nilsen...
Post by: slimm50 on July 09, 2004, 02:19:46 PM
The pics you recently posted, and the location given below your avatar got me curious about Norway, because I know absolutely nothing about the country. Based on your photos and what I've been able to glean in a few minutes from the internet, looks to me like paradise: really lovely. Kinda cool, perhaps, but really beautiful place to live/ visit. From the topo maps I looked at, seems like a lot of good canoeing/ kayaking and boating in general, not to mention fishing. Is that correct? Looks like a place my wife and I'd like to visit, someday.

Thanks, GS. Yeah, water sports (canoeing, especially) combined with backpacking/hiking/camping is my thing, moreso than my wife's.

Yup, i think i live in a very beautiful country...thx for the compliment. :)

If boating is your thing then we have plenty of nice places to see. Norways coastline is longer than the african continent, and when you compare the sizes then you quicly understand that there are many fjords, islands and shelterd bays to enjoy in the summertime.

Just to brag abit :D

"Norway's Fjords Earn Top Score

National Geographic Traveler magazine has rated Norway’s spectacular fjords as the top travel destination in the world in the magazine’s first “Index of Destination Stewardship”—an elite list of the least spoiled, great places on earth.

For the cover story in its March 2004 issue, National Geographic Traveler surveyed more than 200 tourism experts to evaluate 115 of the world’s best-known destinations according to criteria that pertain to cultural, environmental and aesthetic integrity. Norway’s fjords earned the top ranking based on what the magazine called a combination of geographic good luck—the fjords’ rugged terrain, attractive climate, difficult access and short tourist season—and Norway’s excellent environmental track record.

The fjord region on the west coast of Norway offer some of the most dramatic and beautiful sceneries in the world. Visitors are treated to a variety of wilderness experiences, including mountains, glaciers, national parks, crystal-clear waterfalls, fertile green valleys and hillsides, and expansive fruit orchards. The centuries-old fjord villages are rich with traditional stave churches, historical sites and charming hotels."

I recently read an article that said the norwegian coastguard are helping Croatia building their navy after the norwegan coastguard model in preperation for future membership in NATO.  They are sending people up here for training and we are sending some down there to help them out. The article isnt in English im afraid Grunherz.

Both, and polarbears on Svalbard.

Cool :)

A big part of seeing other countries is to see and apreciate the wildlife I reckon.

Yeah, but you are not gonna see any bears or wolves in nature. The bears and wolves are usually to shy and live away from were one would go. Polarbears can be seen if you go to Svalbard tho.

I havent seen any except in the zoo.

Post by: Bluedog on July 09, 2004, 05:57:40 PM
Yep, I didnt picture wolves and bears hanging out in people's back yards or anything :)
Just the fact that there are places that people dont go, thereby leaving the animals alone is cool in itself.

I've never seen either a bear, or a wolf. Not even in a zoo.

Very true, it is about quality...I can't think of another nation that has everything from tropical jungle to 14,000 foot snowcovered peaks...USA.  Thats why I rarely travel abroad, we have alittle bit of every part of the world where we live! :)

I have no idea to this day. They just acted very insecure and asked me a whole bunch of detailed questions.

Maybe they were suspicius because I had no set itinerary.

But nah.. They just knew deep down down in their hearts that there was nothing there worth seeing and wanted to spare me the time.. Nice folks..  ;)

This summer is looking like crap so far, and the forecast for the rest is not good either. Its the worst summer i have experienced for many years. My advice would be to wait untill next summer or atleast until august of this year.
