my first car was a 79 chevy malibu station wagon.  It had a V-8 350 in it (I think...know it was a V8).  It had an awsome radio as well.

Point being it was a beast and it hauled ass!

I always prefer cars which don't attract attention.  Flashy cars are nice for sunday diving but it rapidly gets annoying when every punk around is constantly trying to race you.

The fundamental opposite, of course, are cas which look like they have power but--don't.   V-6 Mustangs come to mind in particular, or in another time stock 318 Chargers.

I remember when I was in HS.  I got a Honda and he got a brand new Firebird with the 2.5l Iron Duke.  We both had 95 hp.  :D

Yup...a car that you would not expect to go as fast as it does.  You do know where the term "Q-ship" comes from...right?  Your British, so you'd better. :D

Google for "Q-Ship".

Not necessarily one that looks like crap, just one that looks "slow" and performs much better than expected.

Pretty much a foreign concept in this day and age when even the slowest of the slow have all kinds of bolt-on junk to make them look more "sporty".

At one time "sleepers" almost by definition couldn't be stock, but with the gradual disappearance of cars which don't "look" like performance cars, nowdays almost anything that has reasonable performance without "looking" like it will be called such.

Some people might call my LT1-powered Buick sedan a sleeper although I wouldn't quite agree.

Keeping the thread on track, that V-6 Bonneville would have been a much better car if it had the Turbo Buick engine that was in the Volvo in Funked's initial post  :)

Which, I may add, is a version of the same engine
