Just found out that, most likely, the aircraft is just a movie prop.

"It’s a full size model of a ficticious airplane built for the upcoming Columbia Tri-Star movie “Stealth” starring Jessica Biel.  These scenes are filmed aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln which just returned after 10 months in dry dock and is preparing for local deployment.  The premise of the movie follows an artificial-intelligence program designed by the military to pilot jet planes and reduce the amount of human casualties but one of the AI pilots runs amok and starts killing people."

If it's AI controlled why have a cockpit? ... Let me guess; so that the human hero can hunt down the flying terminator in an epic dogfight.

My favorite thing to do at work is to tell a noobie he needs to assist on an Egress Final (ejection system inspection) on the global hawk/UCAV.

Usually gets them every time

Reminds me of a bogus assignment notice posted on the bulletin board when I was at tech school, about a *new* Air Force specialty: Minuteman Test Pilot Program.

Then there's the old aircraft maintenance standby, where you tell the newbie to go to base supply and pick up a roll of flightline.  Gets them every time :D.  There are a few others, but they escape me at the moment.

It kinda looks like this plane:

the Switchblade, which made it into Popular Science.

In the ARMY we sent them out for a can of Freq Grease, a box of Chem light batteries, and some "Grid" Squares.

OMG LOL! I don't know but somehow I find it hard to believe a wing would be able to switch trailing edge to leading edge. The contol surfaces and hydraulics/servos would hardly stand up to the stress, especially at mach 3. Can you hear it SNAP? :lol That dipped nose looks like it's designed for slow speeds. Mach 3? Forget it. Good looking mock-up tho.

I wonder if the producers of "Stealth" will credit Dale Brown?  The thought controlled aircraft premise is virtually the same as his novel "Day of the Cheetah."

Being a paratrooper we used to tell them to go to the 1st Sgt and ask him for the keys to the drop zone.

I was a combat engineer so we would also give them a mallet and a peice of chalk and tell them to go find all the weak points in a dozer blade.  They were supposed to do that by tapping with the mallet and marking (with chalk) each spot that didn't sound different....for those that down know, ever spot on a dozer blade sounds different...but it was fun to watch.
Title: This is a comp job
Post by: MnkyMeat on July 30, 2004, 03:16:32 PM
A comp   meaning composite. . .   in the terms of special effects.

:rofl

its a 3-D model some dude did and composited onto pictures of a flight deck... probably replacing and aircract that was there before.

Did a pretty good job too  nice lighting and comp work. . .
The planes design is what makes it look fake ,,  , has too much cool and not enough practical or realistic design in it.

Check this forum out, , ,  people doing some realy nice CG aircraft ... well and there is some bad ones in there too.
Ranging from profesional to "hey mommy look what I made"

The design of the "plane" looks to be several concepts that were purposed to the Navy for their A-12 program. Notice the "Jack knife" variable geometry wing. Instead of folding back like conventional A/C they fold forward. The wings also look to be swept forward when extended. It looks REALLY cool too :D
Me thinks the movie will flop though. Kinda reminds me of "Macross Plus". VERY good Anime flik.

Use to get them to goto tool crib and ask for a Yard of Flightline and the keys to all the aircraft we were going to be working. One night A fellow ECM troop brought back about 20 assorted items they had given him. Plus they gave him hatch handles and told him not to mix them up (all the very same square bent peice of metal). They said they were the keys and if you used the wrong one it could severly damage the aircraft. He lugged it all about half a mile out to the jet we were on. Felt bad for him but we all had a good laugh about it.
