Title: Anyone live near Burlington, Wisconsin?
Post by: mosgood on July 12, 2004, 03:35:45 PM
I'm considering a move to that area and would like to get a good idea of what I'm getting into.  I know that a visit there isn't really enough to judge.

Anyone?

<-- in Milwaukee along with JB42. Octavious too.

Burlington is decent, almost closer to chicago IIRC, been a while since i have been down there.

it is quite rural, about 1/2 hour drive to "the city" of Milwaukee, or at least the outskirts. they make coats there lol

lake geneva (a resort community sort of) is nearby, along with east troy (which has alpine valley amphitheater / ski hill where stevie ray vaughan died)

east troy is considered a rural suburab of milwaukee to give you an idea of location.

co-worker who lives south of milwaukee says "burlington is small" LOL. there is a nestle factory there i hear.

thats all i got.

why you thinking abuot there?

There's a Direct Marketing/ Advertising company that is located there that I've been using for about 6 years.  The reason I use them is because they are first rate.  They are well known in the industry and well respected.  When we came out with Taebo, they were the ones that got us onto every tv in the country in a very fast time frame.

Soooo.....  the current Director of Media is moving up to run the company as soon as he finds a replacement and I'm thinking of being that replacement.

It might work out nice because I ahve a HUGE base of relatives in the Tomah area.  That's about 3 hours away.

I like Wisconsin, with the exception of Milwaukee, it's just a big city.  Okay as big cities go, I just don't care for big cities.

Most of Wisconsin is quite flat,  easy to get out in the country as they say, lots of trees and farmland in the state.

Good hunting and fishing to be had there.

The flatness = glacial paths :)  Kettle moraine has some rather nice hiking trails.   Nice hills (Moraines) left behind by receeding glaciers.  We have one 'official' mountain - Rib Mountain.  Supposedly it barely meets the requirements.  The Southwestern part of the state (Lacrosse and south) were untouched by glaciers and are still relatively 'jagged'.  Nice non-flat area out there too.  Watch out for the true flatlanders to the south.  Heathens think Wisconsin is their playground.  We lovingly call them FIBs.

Anyway, Mosgood, Wisconsin is a decent place.  However, if you have children, I would suggest keeping them out of public schools :)  Tuition hikes for the UW state college system are skyrocketing every year.

Burlington's location, Racine County, puts you in a decent spot.  45 minutes away from Milwaukee, about an hour from Madison (GREAT city, college twon; very colorful, diverse).  Of course, if you're into fishing/hunting, Wisconsin is the place for you.  The other week a few of us went out on the lake and caught a few 12-13" Perch.  They were ****ing HUGE.

Plus we've got Oshkosh an hour north of ya :)  EAA baby!

Wow

I spent a bunch of summers in Wilton and Ontario.  Canoing on the kickapoo river and hiking Wildcat Mountain.

My relatives are mostly the Osgood's and the Calhouns.

Here's a story about the Kickapoo river.

When I was a kid and during one of my summers there, my aunt and a few of her guy friends took me canoing.  We planned on camping out on the river and during that night one of her friends went for a walk.  When he came back, he was very excited and wanted the pillow cases off all the pillows.

Turns out,  he ran into a whole field of Pot plants that came up to the top of my head.  They had a good old time stuffing as much as they could into pillow cases.

Of course looking back, I'm sure my mom wouldn't have been to thrilled to hear about all that.

LOL Oct

If it wasn't for us FIB's drinking all your beer in the summer and tearing up your snowmobile trails in the winter Wisconsin would be broke :)

My favorite Wisconsin areas
Rhinelander, got some friends that own a 6 cottage resort just outside of town on 8, they have there own bar on site, so all the kids can play and all the adults can close the bar at night without driving anywhere, except for the night we all decided to check out the island in the middle of the lake on our rented pontoon boat and the friggin engine died at 3 in the morning, there is nothing like 8 drunk men tearing apart an engine in the dark laffing their arses off, while their wives are beeching up a storm about the kids being all alone across the lake...

Lake winnebago, had lots of fun water skiiing that lake in my teens.
The Brat stop on 94 at the Lake Geneva exit... and many more
My kids live with my ex in New Holstein, they actually have 2 stoplights now :)
Wisconsin is a nice area to visit, Chicago is a great place to live :)

Cant say I know much about Burlington.

I live in LaCrosse on the Misssissippi River,  its beautiful and far from flat long the river.

I know Lazer is in Tomah and Im surprized he has found his way down to LaCrosse to have lunch with the AH guys here.

Ontairo, Wildcat Mnt., Kickapoo.  Thats some old stomping grounds for me as well.   My best Buddy had Land just on the west side of Wildcat.    I wonder if "Phil's Danceland" bar is still open.   Iv not been up there for a few years,  but its about a half hour drive.

As Octavious mentioned,  The Experimental AirCraft Association is headquartered in Oshkosh  pretty much straight north of the Milwaukee area by 90miles?     Each year at the end of July is Airventure the EAA convention.    Nearly a Million people, thousands of aircraft and everyone in aviation world flocks to Oshkosh for the largest Airshow/Convention/show in the world.
This is a Cant miss for any Warbird lover since there are always hundreds of past military aircraft on hand.
