Title: Higher pings
Post by: SCDR on July 12, 2004, 11:30:03 PM
With AH1 I had any where from 160 - 190 ms ping with my dial-up.
Now with AH2 it's 200 - 240 ms.  Skuzzy, I know you say anything
under 300 is "golden", yet it's strange for such a jump in the ping.
Any ideas?

Probably more users online now in your network area.

Ethernet communication gets worse as more people come online.

A few of things can generally cause that.

1)  A route change on the Internet by your ISP, usually due to a different backbone, or newly installed backbone connection or a bad route propagation.

2)  Your computer getting hammered with broadcast floods, worm attacks, possible local DLL's running due to spyware or trojans.

3)  Your ISP backbone getting saturated, either due to abnormally high traffic, or DoS (denial of service) attacks.

Thanks Skuzzy. I'm thinking Qworst is the problem. point in case,
today I come home and they had mismarked where the phone
lines are and Tex-NewMex power company dug a hole RIGHT
thru the line leading to my house.
FYI I haven't heard anything from my ISP about 1 & 3, and 2 is
not possible. I run NAV once a week and run Ad-aware twice
a week.
Sys Specs
P3 500
512 Mg RAM
GF3 64 Mg  56.72 drivers
80 Gig HD

Think I should upgrade my sys?

NAV and Adaware will not catch everything that can cause problems with your computer.  There are malware and spyware DLL's that will be missed by both of the above programs.  Just FYI.

I forgot, I also use SpyBot. Now my new question is what do we
use to find the stuff missed by these 3 programs, NAV, Ad-aware,
and SpyBotSD?
I got Ad-aware & SpyBot because I read  about them here in the
fourms, and I gathered that between all 3 they got everything.
What do we need to use?
