Title: Welcome,Comrade, to the Russian Front! (10bears new terrain)
Post by: Ripsnort on November 27, 2000, 09:34:00 AM
What this picture doesn't show is the clouds and layers of clouds  right to the deck at A1,having to wait for a cloud bank to move so you can take off.. and believe it or not, my Frame Rate is higher than that of Main arena in AH.  I will post more tomorrow.  Terrain is still in beta, 10bears  will notify us when he wants this released to the public, but I can attest (along with other VMF-323 members) that this terrain ROOOOOOOOOOCKS!    (http://Ripsnort60.tripod.com/ahss76.jpg)

Very, very nice.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)

All we need now is the Il-2, T-34 and Stuka and we'd be set.

Yes, I thought the same, until I fought in them.  I avg. about 34-45 FRS, whereas in the Main arena, I avg. about 22 FRS.  And the wind was moving them quite fast, it was surreal...

Ripsnort, what are the specs for your PC? I'm curious.
Currently I get hi 30's to 40's till I get around clouds and smoke. Smoke is the worste. but around clouds I end up in the low 20's.
I am in line ofr an upgrade from a PII 333 to a PIII 600E soon. That will help but I'm wondering how much.

Sorry to got OT. I'm still amazed vy that terrain though. BIG wtfg!!

In northern Russia it wasn't uncommon to have solid clouds as low as a 1000 feet.

Guys you know that you can push your Coppermines (very good are 600E and 700E) at 112FSB with only a BIOS setting change? With a PC133 RAM you can go at 124FSB. In both cases there are no heat nor stability problem at all. Dunno if the 550 is able to do the same thing.

Anyway, the new terrain rocks! Bring in Il-2s, T-34s and more Yaks for my friend Leonid!  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif) A winter-camo Focke-Wulf and/or 109 would be cool as well ...  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Thx guys thanks Leonid, that's SW Russia btw.. took me an hour just to find to place  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).. they changed the name in 1960 to Volgograd.

I asked Duckwing, who's putting together the Stalingrad scenario, to d/l Orge's mapmaker program (he's got bigger harddrive) The first map we made (no textures yet) just seemed too big 512x512 toooo flat 0 elevation everywhere I checked. Duckwing turned me on to the Terraserver site. They got everything! geopolitical maps for placing cities, towns etc. Good relief maps to use with Wabbit's bit2map program which I used for Luzon and seems to work good.
Next off to the library for some more "Air Over" books I got "Britain from the Air" (wanted castles) and "Earth from Above" neither had what I wanted.. winter from above.. Had to wing the textures with graphics program. Anyway the snow blends in well with clouds. (I took screenshot of clouds so snow would be exactly same color)

Part of Duckwing's scenario involve tanks.. lots of em.. He's going to get back to me where he wants VH bases located. I've also changed a couple of the city tiles I wasn't happy with.
1st step is to send finished map to HTC for any changes Pyro wants me to make then you guys can play in the snow  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)..
I put a bow on clipboard map (ahhh how cute) and am calling it the "Christmas Map"

Stalingrad!!!!!
Red Oktober factory, Krasnaya Sloboda, Mamaev Kurgan, Pitomnik....
What a scenario!.
But I don't think the game has the "hardware" to run it with a minimun of "inmersion".  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)
We lack Sturmovik, T-34, Katyushas, Nebelwerfer, He-111, Stuka, Ju-52,U-2 biplanes.....
Anyway the first thing, the soil, looks great.

Beautyfull terrain, however in h2h everything is a bit too spread out for only 8 players. cant do much more than ffa, however it is pretty enough to excuse putting beauty before function  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Wobble, its not intended for  HTH, and was not intended for  a HTH download, at the time I put up a session, I called the session "Alpha-Private" and Cobraj came into the room as we were flying, so kindly tell him not to host that terrain until 10bears can get the final copy up.  Thanks. (Thinks "next time I need to add password...")

I wasnt trying to diss the map or anything, i love the spacing (being a bomber dweeb), i think they should replace the map in the MA with that one.

10Bears,

I don't see flat terrain when I test random parts of SW Russia.  Also, the latest version can also make terrains at any size you want (i.e. smaller than 512x512).

So, if you want to try using output from the USGS topography and land use database through my program again, drop me a line at reaper@cris.com with the area you are looking at and the size terrain you want (256x256, whatever).  I'll just email you the elv and typ files.

I accidently ran into Stalingrad last night 10Bears. I am absolutely astonished its .. aaaaargh So Good! The guy who was host didnt know where it came from, he had got it same way I did: By logging on a random h2h host.
You should place your signature and version number on the clipboard 10Bears, so people know its you, and if its an early or finnished version of the terrain they are in.
Once again fantastic. Immersion was great allmost expected my wind shield to be covered with ice from my breath.

To Shawn, I'm writting you right now w/ coords right now! Thx I didn't know the new version you can scale down to 256x256 that size seems to fit the best.

To Wobble, yes I've had horse tacos... they weren't that good

To Cobraj, damn you! the ART, tank bases, strat targets, rivers etc weren't ready yet! I asked em' not to release this to h2h yet. Just kidding you had no way of knowing

To the guys getting cold flying map.. I suggest "Gray Goose Vodka"  no mix.  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
