Title: Diplomacy Game Needs Players
Post by: Sandman on July 13, 2004, 07:53:09 PM
banana has agreed to master a game.

SOB is in. I'm in. B17Skull is interested.

We need four more players for a game to start at the end of the month.

Who's in? Sikboy? Tarmac? Nash?

I'd love to, but the police academy's keeping me way too busy.  Next one for sure though.

How much time does it take up to master a game?  If banana wants in, I could try my hand at that.

Sorry... I posted this soon after that other thread. It was getting difficult to skim through quickly for the players. (Yes, I realize that you were first, but I was also distracted by the Texas visit plans).

Okay... So far...

Sling322
SOB
Skull
Nash
RTStuka
Myself

We need one more... That is... unless Tarmac wants to be the master and banana plays.

Did I miss anyone?

There we are... Seven players.

I'm out of town until the end of July. The first turn is always the hardest... lots of comm going back and forth. I expect that if banana sets up the game, it will be a day or two before the newer players get logged on to it and situated.

I'm out of town on holidays for about a week towards the end of August. I'll have access to the net, but will be down for a coupla days travelling getting there and back. Otherwise it's all good.

If you know ahead of time, setting up vacation time on the DPJudge is possible. You basically suspend the game for a bit.

Most of these games have lasted over six months. We can afford to miss a few days here and there, IMO.

Nash, thanks but I really haven't looked into the details and I wouldn't want to ruin it for the others by being a newbie.

Guys, all I ask is that if you commit to playing, you realize that the game with last aprox 4-6 months. Yes, I said months, not weeks. :)

It totally disrupts the game when someone drops out, so if you commit to play, we expect you to be in it until the bloody ending. So please think about this and make sure you can commit to us for a long time. You will be rewarded with one of the most stimulating, frustrating and fun games out there right now.

Also, I believe that the amount of fun you get out of the game is directly proportional to how much you communicate with the other leaders. In the few O'club games we've played, the leaders who didn't communicate with everyone got CRUSHED, and crushed fast. Those who communicated a lot, seemed to survive longer, or at least got crushed less fast.

The country assignments are random, and the person who gets Austria is going to have his work cut out for him to stay alive.

I don't have time to get the game ready until next week, and Sandman is out until then anyways. So, in the meantime, here are some links to read so you can get a feel for how the game works, and start learning the various challenges that each country faces.

I will start a thread next week with complete details on how to join the game. Until then, you all need to go here http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/dppd/ and register with the DPPD. This is the "DPJudge", which is the browser based interface we will use for the game. The email address you give them will be the one where all your Diplomacy emails go to. From the DPPD, you can also add backup email addresses that you can change to, so you can have the DPJudge send Diplomacy emails to your work address during the week, then switch to your home address on the weekend. But you have to tell it to switch manually, so usually the best policy is to use only one email, which you can access while at work and at home.

http://www.diplomacy-archive.com/resources/strategy.htm

http://www.diplom.org/

Here's a good intro to Diplomacy if you're a newbie. You can ignore any discussion about sending emails or using the "Ken Lowe" system, however. We will be using the browser-based "DPJudge", which is far more user-friendly. The only time you will need to send an email is before the game starts, in order to join the game. I will explain how to do that in my thread next week.

This one looks interesting to me as well. Its probably one of those that would take many, many months to complete the game via email.

20th Century Diplomacy map (http://www.diplom.org/Online/maps/20th-small.gif)

Is this game still available as a true board game? Just wondering since I just bought my oldest son Risk a few months ago and he loves playing it with my wife and I when his friends come over to spend the night.

Whoah...

Hey fellers... Do you feel like playing on the 20th Century map that Reschke dug up? For a goof? A change of pace?

Could be a nice change from the Austria-always-gets-crushed-watch-the-Turkey/Russia-Alliance-and-NEVAR-trust-banana ()-game we know so well.
Title: Diplomacy Game Needs Players
Post by: Wanker on July 15, 2004, 07:17:05 PM
LOL Nash! :)

I'll see if I can find some text on using the 20th century map, but ultimately we'll play on whatever map the players agree to.

Personally, there's a ton of gameplay left in the traditional map, and it would be fun to see Austria come out on top sometime.
Title: Diplomacy Game Needs Players
Post by: Nash on July 15, 2004, 07:27:39 PM
Of course... whatever everyone decides is cool with me.

Doubt you'll see Austria ever come out on top (unless I play it, naturally)... Everyone has to run over it to get to everyone else. The trick for Austria is just to throw a littla pizzazz into it's martyrdom.

Lookin' at the 20th centuray map, I'd expect alliances to form almost along the lines of the ones that exist now.... just from a geography standpoint... until Botswana pulls off the ultimate backstab to become world dominator. Could be fun. But yeah....
Title: Diplomacy Game Needs Players
Post by: Wanker on July 15, 2004, 07:46:14 PM
You know, all Austria has to do is get one ally, and get the others to look elsewhere for a few turns.

Easier said than done, however.
Title: Diplomacy Game Needs Players
Post by: Sandman on July 15, 2004, 07:49:52 PM
Ya know... if we pick a different map, it's possible to have more than just seven players.

For example, the Imperial Variant (http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/?page=about:imperial) has 13 players. Hell, the Chaos Variant (http://www.floc.net/dpjudge/?page=about:chaos) has 34!

If it comes to a vote, I'd like to give Imperial a try... can we get six more players?

That's the problem for Austria as I see it.

In order for everyone to look elswhere, they gotta stand on some really really tall ladders and look *over* Austria.

er... you get the idea.

But yeah... could happen.

It looks like the map Reshke referred to is the same as the one used in the Imperial Variant. The 1900 map is similar to the standard map, but has some changes to supply centers and some extra territories.

Look on this page for map variants:

If worse comes to worse, can we have a couple of guys playing two countries? Mebbe get banana to designate the countries so that those countries aren't adjacent and used to gang bang?

Sounds kinda weird, but not really any different than the situation in a normal game when somebody takes over someone else's country.

'course... the best would be to have enough players.... I'm just thinkin' just in case...
Title: Diplomacy Game Needs Players
Post by: Nash on July 16, 2004, 07:07:03 PM
Just had a look at the countries' starting armies/fleets.

Russia and England start with 11 and 14, for example, while Brazil, Austria and Japan only get 4. Mexico gets just 3.

We could hook it up so that someone plays both Mexico and Japan, while another guy plays Brazil and Austria.

They still wouldn't equal the strength of the a lot of the other players, and their countries would be quite far apart.

Hell, keeping their countries seperated prolly isn't neccessary because even with combined countries they'd still be practically the underdogs in there.

yours in the name of science.
Title: Diplomacy Game Needs Players
Post by: Sandman on July 16, 2004, 07:34:07 PM
You could set it up and have two player names, but they'll each have to have separate email accounts. The DPJudge discourages such activity and odds are, if you were caught doing it, you would be banned. The assumption is that you're cheating.
Title: Diplomacy Game Needs Players
Post by: Nash on July 16, 2004, 07:38:15 PM
Just get a couple of diff yahoo accounts.

It'd only be two guys doing it.

Is the DPJudge a bot capable of handwriting analysis or something?

er... what IS the DPJudge?
Title: Diplomacy Game Needs Players
Post by: Sandman on July 16, 2004, 07:50:08 PM
Guess I should have phrased it better... "DPJudge manager, owner, etc." Doesn't really matter... it turns out I was wrong.

Quote
A person may play one and only one power during any game. Exceptions: Players who have joined a game but who have not yet had a set of submitted orders be processed by the judge are permitted to resign one power and take up position as another power if they receive permission from the Game Master, who is obliged in any game allowing private press to poll the other players for unanimous consent. This rule is also waived for variant games in which control of multiple powers by a single person is explicitly allowed by rule and for private games when unanimous consent of the other players and the GameMaster is obtained for an eliminated person to take a different, vacated role later in the game.

This setting might be how we accomplish it:

Quote

PLAYER playerData [phase priorPlayerData...] -or-
PLAYER RESIGNED [phase priorPlayerData...] -or-
PLAYER DUMMY [phase priorPlayerData...]
Specifies the history of all players of the power, including the present player. The playerData is the player's DPPD ID number, e-mail address, and name, given in standard DPPD format. For example:
     PLAYER #42|joe@blow.com|Joe_Blow
The phase is the game phase (in the form S1901M, etc.) in which the player took over the power (and therefore the phase in which the prior player resigned the power). Any priorPlayerData is similarly formatted, and provides a history of all prior players of a power. For example:
     PLAYER #42|joe@blow.com|Joe_Blow S1911R NO-ID|john@doe.net|
would indicate that john@doe.net (who has no DPPD ID number, and therefore his name is not known) played the power until the Spring 1911 Retreat phase, when Joe Blow (DPPD ID number 42) took over. Before Joe Blow sent in his TAKEOVER command, the PLAYER line looked like this:
     PLAYER RESIGNED S1911R NO-ID|john@doe.net|
If the first word on a PLAYER line is DUMMY or RESIGNED, the player is not e-mailable.
Important: A Master should never manually add RESIGNED to any PLAYER line! The addition and removal of RESIGNED must always be left to the DPjudge to do when e-mailed RESIGN and TAKEOVER commands are received!
DUMMY is used if the power will or may receive orders without a specific person playing the power (for example, the Master could enter orders for the power, or other players could be responsible for entering the orders, etc.), or no orders will be entered for it at all (civil disorder). A Master may create DUMMY powers before game-start (that is, by adding
POWER POWER#1
PLAYER DUMMY
(etc., etc.) to the status file to cause a certain number of powers to be unassigned to human players. If the CD_DUMMIES rule is in effect, DUMMY powers without orders will be considered to be in civil disorder as soon as all other powers either have submitted orders (and not set their WAIT flag) or have been declared in civil disorder (by the operation of the CIVIL_DISORDER rule).
RESIGNED is used when a position is in need of replacement, and a NEED line should appear in the status file describing the missing position. If the CIVIL_DISORDER rule is in effect, any power without submitted orders (including DUMMY powers, but not including those marked RESIGNED), will be considered to be in civil disorder when a deadline occurs, and the phase will process without orders from the power.
Note that while a player may change his ADDRESS information (through use of the SET ADDRESS e-mail directive), except by resignation, a player cannot change the PLAYER line information. Only the Master may do so by modification of the status file.

or this one:

Quote

CONTROL powerName...
Specifies a list of one or more players who may take control (for order entry, press writing, etc.) of the power. This list is used by the ROTATE command to cause power control to be rotated through other players. The first player in the list is the player currently in control of the power, and the list will rotate from the last power listed back to the first power. This line may not appear for any power that has a PASSWORD. Powers with another player in CONTROL are not shown in the list of powers that can be "logged on," but if a player is in CONTROL of a power, that player will be able to log in as that power from his own page. For example:
     CONTROL AUSTRIA FRANCE ITALY RUSSIA
indicates that the power is currently controlled by Austria, and that the next time control is ROTATEd, it will be controlled by France, and then on the next rotation, by Italy, etc. The CONTROL scheme is used when setting up a "Missing Man" variant game. In the e-mailed CREATE message (or in the status file before the players JOIN), the Master would create POWER stanzas for any powers not to be played. For example, if Italy and Germany are to be played missing, controlled by the other players, the status file could contain:
     POWER ITALY
CONTROL ENGLAND FRANCE RUSSIA TURKEY AUSTRIA
     POWER GERMANY
CONTROL TURKEY AUSTRIA ENGLAND FRANCE RUSSIA

There it is.

Rotating rule of two small countries.

Would add an interesting dimension as for one turn, someone uses it to his own advantage.... then the next turn someone else does the same. And on.

So... it turns out we have enough people right now.

Optimally though it'd be better to have 13 people. Since the game doesn't start for a couple of weeks we can leave this open. But... we're not screwed if nobody else signs up.

it's an option anyways.

WTG Sultan!

Ok, give me a day or so, and I'll have the game up & ready to join.  It's gonna take me a day to figure out the right incantation to get the game started. I seem to have misplaced the emails I used to start the other game I mastered.

OK, here's the list I have so far.

3. Nash
4. RTStuka
5. Bodhi
6. Nuke
7. SOB
8. SirLoin
9. Reschke
10. Dowding
11. Sandman
12. Habu
13. no.6(bcnu)

I will try to get the game setup today.  But I'm really busy at work, so I can't guarantee it will be today.

I need a "whuppin" oh boy I can't wait to unleash the hounds of war from my tiny island nation or whatever the heck I get on Nefarious. I guess I need to break out the Napoleonic costume just for this one.

I am gonna borrow from Teddy Roosevelt on this one as my nation will follow the foreign policy rule of..."Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far."

Nefarious, don't give up hope, because if any one of those guys listed above fail to join in a timely manner, you're in.

I'm still working out all the parameters of the game right now.
