I'm not gonna stand by the "stats" of this but it was a pretty good email my father sent me. The message is what counts here!
To Kill an American
There was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.
So an Australian dentist wrote the following to let everyone know what an American is, so they would know when they found one:
An American is English, or French, or Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek. An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, or Arab, or Pakistani, or Afghan. An American may also be a Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans.
An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, or Buddhist, or Muslim. In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses. An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs
claiming to speak for the government and for God.
An American is from the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person the pursuit of happiness.
An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need. When Afghanistan was overrun by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country. As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan.
Americans welcome the best, the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best athletes. But they also welcome the least.
The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty, welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America. Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, 2001 earning a better life for their families. I've been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 other countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists.
So you can try to kill an American if you must. Hitler did. So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and every blood thirsty tyrant in the history of the world. But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself.
Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.

Americans are Americans...
we need to remember that we are not (in no paticular order) italian-americans, irish-americans, african americans, french americans, mexican americans, asian americans... we are AMERICANS... and multi-culturalism is the issue that will cause us the most problems. Look at history. I say, we should ALL be proud of our heritage, but ALL CITIZENS recognise that we are AMERICANS FIRST, and anything else second!

Nope, just stating that if you snope it you will find that it was written by Peter Ferrara, an associate professor of law at the George Mason University School of Law in Northern Virginia.
The message is definitely good, just not credited accurately.

Good luck and best wishes. Just don't pass up opportunities to further your education including through the service. ;)
BTW it was a good post. Sad to say the reporting is so blatantly biased towards the sensational in the regular media.

I can only disagree with mentioning Stalin and Mao.
And I'll definetly not boast this in your place:
When Afghanistan was overrun by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country.
And this is not true:
The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty, welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed.
Please check the current visa rules. Maybe only the Statue of Liberty welcomes this people, but definetly not American government :(
Sorry for interfering. I hate to see Americans killed, as I hate to see Russians, Bulgarians, Ukrainians, Italians, Spanish, Polish, Iraqi, Afghani or anyone. !

Do you really think that Stalin and Mao deliberately KiLlEd Americans?
Do you think that "helping" Islamic terrorists including mr. Usama against legitimate government of Afghanistan was right? Do you think that Soviet military assistance to Afghani government was bloody worse then your unprovoked agressions in Yugoslavia and Iraq? Should I add some words about Vietnam to this glorious declarations of American achievements?
Do you really believe that your country still welcomes immigrants, including refugees, like other countries, Russia being a good example?
Mratlet, you provoked me, thanks. I hate to see anyone killed, but being AmEriCaN doesn't make you special. I do believe that one American killed in WTC is equal to a Russian killed by Chechen "freedom fighters" in Moscow apartment explosions or a Vietnamese killed by stratospheric bombings in Hanoi.
What I hate is stupid propaganda that includes some truth and some lies. Not for me please. I was fed by this in Soviet times.

Nope. It's a jeer at a citizen of a country that is left over from a failed attempt to become a super-power that suffers from nation-envy and has to use every opportunity possible to put down the US.
This post is about the diversity of America, among other things. Fortunately for you, it also provided a forum for you to cry in.

1- Hmm yes and no
2- NO (but americans saw this as Russia instilling communism in Afghanistan)...
3- 2 parts......1st Vietnam and Afghanistan were pretty much the same(American POV Boroda....instilling Communism)
2nd The Yugoslavian Gov. was practicing GENOCIDE on a wide scale....and it was too close too some Europian countries....couldn't have that

Failed attempt to become a superpower?! LOL! Do you proud yankees still have mannable space flight? :D Failed attempt?! Who the hell did build the first civilian (commercial) nuclear power station 50 years ago?! Who have reached into space 12 years after the war that you didn't suffer from?
Diversity of America is a thing that you can hardly boast. Do you have national states inside your "union" that are Moslim, Bhuddist, Orthodox or Pagan, like Russia does? Do you have national education in minority languages and special laws for preservation of national cultures for immigrants like France? Did you have a special parliament house for different nationalities like USSR did?
Diversity? LOL!
Envy?
LOL!!! Tell me how much do you owe to your bank for the house you live in, for your car and other stuff. Then go think about WHO should envy whom.
UAHAHHAHA!!! :D:D:D

How....what word can i use....unfortunate.....at least he has a house and car, most communist could have also, unfortunatly you all spent to much time killing your best and britest people

23 million? it's a new figure. 27 millions killed by nazis, plus 23 millions killed by you.. oh sorry what you think were killed by evil Russians :D makes 50 millions total. The whole population of USSR in 1941 was 150 millions. Great. How does it come that current population of Russia only is 150 millions? And the whole population of USSR in 1989 was 300 millions?

Britest people - it's for Dowding and other Brits here. Sorry, I didn't kill anyone. I must be a bad Russian. I also don't wear fur hat and prefer tea to vodka.
I have my own apartment that costs $60K. I don't have a car because I don't need it in Moscow with it's 10 million population and great public transport system (remnant of evil Soviet regime). I don't owe anyone a single kopeyka.

So, Stalin and Mao never intentionally killed Americans. I suppose the Korean War never happened. Would be news to my father, since Mao sent soldiers from China to Korea, and they tried like Hell to kill him, several times, and damned near succeeded. He was pretty familiar with Chinese from another little conflict in the Pacific, called World War II.
Then there's always the USAF pilots who were facing Soviet pilots in Migs supposedly belonging to the North Koreans. I'm sure Stalin didn't send any of the Russian pilots or the advisors to kill Americans. The fact that they flew for North Korea, and managed their radar installations doesn't really mean Stalin wanted to kill Americans does it?
Oh, and exactly when and where did the U.S. kill 23 million Russians?
-
Lol, BORODA, since at this time your country is no longer a threat to the world or us,I do hope that things work out well for u and your country. And how can I make a big deal out of your revisionist view of history, when 45 percent of Americans do the same. I dont remember you being snotty or bashing America to much, you are just doing your best to say that no goverment is better than another.
I must clean up 2 points, the nazis did not kill that many people,o k everyone one look it up in the library of any country except communist ones.I am not defending nazis in any way.
Communisism has the honor of killing more human beings than any other entity in the history of the world.
The numbers of citizens killed by russian gov. spans from right after the revolution to the supposed end of communism in russia.Good luck boroda but ah please stay where u are lol.

Where did I say that US killed 23 millions of Russians? I may be really drunk...
Soviet pilots over Korea were performing strictly defensive tasks. Just like Soviet SAM crews in Vietnam. I am proud that my Uncle recorded 4 victories as a targeting officer in Vietnam. (sorry for obvious bait).
China sent only volunteers to Korea. We both understand what kind of "volunteers" they were. But. In no way Stalin or Mao killed Americans as "bloodthirsty tyrants". They fought Americans in the battlefield in fair fight. And then please remember that Mao ended as a sour provider of American politics in Far East, including military conflicts with USSR and failed invasion to Vietnam in 1979. He killed more Chinese for American interests then fighting against them.

Nazis killed twenty seven millions of Soviet people. That's JFYI.
Soviet regime didn't reach even one tenth of that number.
OK. If you call me a Communist - then I tell you that Maoism is a freaky distorted trend that doesn't have anything comon with Communism. And this inhuman leftist trend was supported by your "land of free" only to oppose my Motherland.
Now go train to put condoms onto bananas. You have small bananas. But even with such small dummies you are overoptimistic.

The death toll from the 1932-33 famine in Ukraine has been estimated between six million and seven million. According to a Soviet author, "Before they died, people often lost their senses and ceased to be human beings." Yet one of Stalin's lieutenants in Ukraine stated in 1933 that the famine was a great success. It showed the peasants "who is the master here. It cost millions of lives, but the collective farm system is here to stay."..

First off the original description of America and Americans is true. Anybody can become American in a way that you can't become Russian or Chinese or whatever. Not in terms of citizenship but in terms of what America represents. To be fair the same basically applies to Canada and Australia to a lesser extent.
The USA has done a brilliant job in uniting a huge and disparate country. This is done by constantly reiterating how great America is to it's own citizens in a way which would be uneccessary and even sinister in other older more established countries. By rights America should have disintegrated into subtley different and often warring countries like South America. That it didn't is due largely due to the brilliantly crafted Constitution.
Where it goes wrong is when this pride in American translates into excessive nationalism and uncritical patriotism. That is dangerous.
Any country, whether it be America, Germany or Russia whose people are led to believe that they are better than anyone else or have the right to interfere in other countries affairs because their system of government is better is asking for trouble.
It is OK to be patriotic. But as Boroda shows, you can be completely sincere in your views and complete wrong. Sorry Boroda but you provide a mirror image to many on the other side. You mention Vietnam and Korea and are proud of the 'defence' of those countries by the Soviets. In that they succeeded. Look at the raging success of North Korea and Vietnam has only recently begun to embrace the idea of even partial freedom. They are not good examples as a counterpont to American views. No German would dream of defending Hitler's regime but then they lost the war. The Soviet Union is indefensible in the same way. Communism as practised is not merely just another political style. It was oppressive and dangerous in a way that simply cannot be said about real democracies.

wow have you ever studied history? Even today America does take in immegrints from all over the world. America still takes in political refugees as well.
example: Dallas Texas has a huge bosnian population....I used to work with a bunch of them. They came to America during the fighting in the 90's and are now making new lives for themselves.
my wife and her entire family game here from Germany in the 80's
I also used to work with a guy from Kenya who came here to flee genicide in Africa. He told me stories of him fighting with a rifle at 13 years old.
You must be a really unhappy person to turn such a posative post into the dribble that you typed.
As far as my father goes: A father taking his kid hunting/camping can teach somone more about life than any text book could ever hope for.
maybe it is you that needs to stop learning about America from the Media and BBS forums.

Aha... so people from western europe are allowed to enter US .. i got it..
Political refugee are allowed to enter as well... ok i got it...
Well im from democratic country, member of NATO and i were not allowed to visit my friend who invited me over there for couple of weeks. And it were few years before i travell to Iran. Even before this applience i used to be almost all over the Europe, few times in Africa, but i were to dangerous and non trusted (as biy behind bullet proof glass said) :D
My friend who had working contract over there were not allowed to enter, coz sister of his wife did stay there on tourist Visa
And many other people who are young mostly with 1 or 3 years of work experience are implicitly ban as well as people who have relatives over there for short time period.....
May be i should claim myself to be political refugee next time i would like to visit some of my friends over there :D
Can you one more explain to me, what does it mean, that Italian is American ?
I can understand what does it mean that Czech is African... coz i know people with dual (multiple) nationalities and passports.... but i realy dont know what should i imagine under that statement.

Its your bad attitude towards America/americans. You think we cant tell? You just come on back and try again you will recieve more of the same.
Maybe after a few days of attitude adjustment I can get you in.
or 90 days maybe :D
He means thousands of Americans are Italian as are thousands of French peoples call themselves American.
Slowhand is kinda slo also to point out the tower on Ellis Island is French. And why should they not love us?
They do.
As you do. Your just to damned slo to know it.
Course you have made that abundantly clear on other posts in this BBs as of late.:lol

Standard verdict from US embassy in Moscow: 30 years old male, no wife and kids - no visa. It's simple as an egg.
It's funny but I will probably have less problems getting a US visa: I already had it 15 years ago and returned to USSR. But I think i'll get arrested on the border :D
Another thing: what should I write in a new form about experience with explosives? If I'll write that I have studied it for 4 years - they'll not give me a visa, if not - they'll say I lied and not give me visa too...
-
Maybe someone here on the BBs has a butt ugly sister you can marry, then they let you in sure...

Another thing: what should I write in a new form about experience with explosives? If I'll write that I have studied it for 4 years - they'll not give me a visa, if not - they'll say I lied and not give me visa too...

What the messege means, and what only you, for various reasons, fail to comprehend, is that almost all Americans, with the exception of Native Americans, have roots elsewhere. Although we all lose some if not most of our identity when we come here, many of us, despite calling ourselves American, still maintain some sort of emotional connection with our ancestral land.
There is a such thing as an American who's proud to be both an American and of person of Italian origin. I'm a Russian-born American myself, and although I'm not very proud of the nation where I was born, I'm proud of my heritage, still speak my native tongue and have two very Americanized parents who, nonetheles, speak with accents--as some of the best Americans do.

When some foreigner live over here he doesnt say "Im scotish" ... he say "Im from Scotland" when they have diferent nationality.

Ok Lada here's how it works from a non American. I'm Irish. I was born in Ireland and I can trace my family name name back to about 1014. That's the year not this morning. I have some English blood in me too. I could be called anglo Irish but that is not the tradition. My heritage is Irish going back a long way. If I went to America to live. I would become an American citizen but still be Irish. I would take pride in being American but that could be taken away at any time. Nothing can take away the fact that I'm Irish.
In America it is the tradition to retain a connection to your origins. Everybody needs a community. It is still possible to live in America and not speak English because many immigrants live with their own nationalities.
Everybody likes to know where they came from and who they are and Americans do that by remembering their origins while thanking God they were born in America.

Are you trying really hard to not understand, or are you just incredibly thick?
Where did I ever say there wasn't German French? Where did I ever say this only occurs in America? Not only do I not KNOW what people in other countries say when referring to their bloodlines, I could care less.
Let me type real slow in hopes that you understand this. If you still have trouble, post your address and I'll put it in pop-up book format for you:
My grandparents came from Scotland. A huge percentage of Americans can go back several generations to find that generation came to another country. The USA is young. While we call ourselves Americans, we still refer to our families nation of origin. In my case, those people are still alive.
When I say "I'm Scottish", I'm not referring to my citizenship. I'm referring to where my family came from, before becoming US citizens.

Hey rest of the world! Leave the Americans to debate how great they all are (Yeah but we're called great haha!). When I see another American preaching to the world about how amazingly fantastic his/her advert infested country is I just turn away. Yes I don't like and yes the words 'God Bless America' make my blood boil to know that they think they're God special creatures (or a master race if you will) but I just ignore them. Pork, do you remember the famous Soviet cartoon, "Pios v sapogah"? ("Dog in boots") It was a story of three musketeers with Dogs as musketeers and Cats as Cardinal's guards. The best thing there was music.
The guy who wrote that music, Chris Kelmy, applied for American visa. The clerk in an embassy asked him what he does for livind, and he answered: "I am a popular singer". Then the clerk asked him: "So, if you are a singer - sing something for me!"
They don't know anything about "other lives". They don't need it. They jst have their quotes and enjoy their power. Thinking that a Russian singer who is a millionaire will stay in the US is ridiculous.
OTOH American special services are doing their jobs quite well. In 1989 when I went to St.Louis as an exchange student I have found out that the family that was hosting me was chosen to 100% satisfy my dreams. This could happen because they kept an eye on my Father that time, so they knew more about my habbits... Can you imagine that my Host was playing a guitar and had Jimmy Page as an idol, Mother of the family taught Computer Science and some more things were just a coinsidence?

I broke no laws and always paid my taxes.
Can you do that in the Soviet Union?

Boroda, I'm sure there is a great deal of injustice, and I don't doubt what you say. I know about difficulties in getting Visas, and it's unfair, capricious and often cruel.
However, my comment about the clerk being intuitive was aimed at Lada's stupidity in not being able, or not willing to understand the concept of Americans with roots in foreign nations.
I'd like to believe he's nothing but a gifted troll, but the fact is, for every talented troll(and he'd have to be one of the best, ever) there are at least five bonafide morons.

Pork, the worst thing about the situation is that when we wanted to get rid of Soviet regime - one of the most important things was that we were promised an opportunity to leave the country and travell all over the world. And it all turned out to be a lie. Our "beloved Pary and Government" let us go out of the country any time, but the people who tried to show us how good can we live under "democracy" instead of "evil Soviet regime" now don't let us visit their countries.
Did you see "Kin-dza-dza"? Looks like Americans are afraid of us like Alphans who asked visitors to wear gas masks so they'll not breathe "dangerous germs" into their perfect ecology.
"Accepting immigrants" is nothing but a myth.

What I know about the US and immigration I know from personal experience. We came here in the early 80s. My parents spoke no English. They were both doctors in Moscow.
five months after getting here, my father started a grueling 7 year neurosurgical residency.
Today he owns his own practice. He's the senior partner of a newly-opened neuroscience clinic in Wilmington DE. He owns three beautiful homes. He holds the title to the apartment we lived in next to the Sokol metrostop in Moscow(which they're trying to sell). He's not in debt. He is, however, widely respected despite his accent, and is friends with as many immigrants as born-Americans. He gets to vote, he gets to go to synagogue. He gets to read books that were censored in Russia...
My mother is happily retired. My entire extended family, on both sides, is here and happy. It took an ungodly amount of work, but here, it was possible.
My grandfather, who lives with my parents and spends hours each day thoughfully pacing the trails and paths of their pristine, heavily-wooded, 5 acre property in Greenville, DE, is the only one of us who still thinks like you.
Please don't go selling me on the idea of the Party. And don't try to educate me on the concept of immigration.

I don't sell any ideas of the Party. And JFYI my Mother lives in Australia for almost 10 years now.
I am just surprised by uncovered hypocrisy of American official propaganda. "We accept refugees only if this can help us against our enemies". Any immigrant from North Korea or Lybia will have 100 times more chances to be accepted in the US then Russian or Czech.
Pork, the whole article that started this thread is pure, rafinated 100% proof propaganda. Diversity is nothing special compared to other countries like Russia or France. Immigration policy is draconian. Boasting that glorious US helped Afghanis against "evil Soviets" is not even funny, it shows that the author of that leaflet doesn't have good relations with his own mind.
Look, USSR helped to protect Vietnam from agressors. Vietnam is a powerfull and peacefull state now, it won a war with Maoist China and liberated Cambodia from Pol Pot. US helped Moslim fundamentalists to fight legitimate government in Afghanistan: look what goes on in Afghanistan now. See any difference?
All the rest is ordinary propaganda blah-blah including mentioning Hitler, Stalin and Mao. I bet 99% of the people to whom this letter is adressed don't know who was Tojo.
Conclusion: total vaue of this leaflet for a literate person is nonexistant. Sorry. Same crap as idiotic Soviet happy pathetic memorandums issued and repeated on every holiday. I can write such stuff for USSR or Russia in enormous quantities without employing my brain at all, and the saddest thing is that there will be quite a lot of people who'll take this mental diarrhea seriously :(
Why are you so offended by Lada's posts? I think it's only because his personal experience blows your bubble of happy ignorance. I didn't think that brainwashing went that deep :(

Sorry everyone.
Actually, Lada's posts made no sense at all. His questions were stupid and his willingness to see anybody's explanation at all was nonexistant. He's an incoherent moron. My experience with immigration, and that of my family's(all 50 or so of us) is far, far more profound than anything that little insect has presented here.
Personally, I thought you were beyond quoting him.
As for my brainwashing. If that's what you call the life I lead right now, then, my dear beard, I invite you to keep your impovrished enlightenment all to yourself.
Personally, I think you're just pining for a past that's never to return. The situation in your country will not improve significantly for at least another generation, and it sucks. It isn't, however, my problem anymore.

Lada, if you think immigration "issues" are endemic to the USA check this out:
I was born in Bermuda to a local father and a Canadian mother. When I was 5 years old the immigration laws at the time were such that I merely had to pledge loyalty to Canada at the consulate and I became a Canadian citizen.
Great stuff.
So...at 21 I travel to Canada to join their armed forces. But..in order to prove I was a Canadian I had to produce a "citizenship" card. Being that I had moved a whole bunch of times and that 16 years had passed since that first card was issued I couldn't find it.
I arrived in Toronto and on day 2 went to the immigration department to get a replacement card.
6 months later I received it in the mail. I was unable to work during those 6 months and lived with some distant cousins who fed me as well. I had to deal with numerous government idiots and sit around all kinds of government departments for hours at a time over the next few weeks.
Also during those 6 months a boat-load of Sheiks were dicovered floating in the Atlantic a couple of hundred miles offshore. The day after they landed on Canadian soil they had been granted immigrant staus, provided with housing, food and cash for clothes. Soon afterwards they became Canadians and were able to work etc. and enjoy all of Canada's socialist benefits.
Not so for me.
My cousin laughed and said he should take me down to Lake Ontario and put me in a Canadian Tire rubber raft and float me out into the Lake. He said he'd call the Coast Guard and get me picked up. That way I'd get my card faster.
Should I hate Canada for that, or just shake my head and mumble "typical governemnt red-tape nonesense."
I chose the latter.

Pork, I say it's propaganda because it's not true and it's aimed at uneducated people so they'll believe it to help a certain government/power to reach it's goals. It sounds exactly as Soviet-time propaganda that noone believed (I mean people from the circles that I was familiar with).
I want you to understand that I am not hostile, just pointing on some issues that are clear from my (or Lada's) critical point of view.
I quote Lada because he, unlike me, had personal experience with the US consulate.

What do you mean by "pining"? http://www.lingvo.ru gives only one definition of verb "to pin" that I find suitable: "lovit' na slove".
I hope you see that I stay here, and I personally never applied for American visa (in 1989 it was all done for us without our direct involvement). I am going to visit my Mother in Australia, but I don't think I will go there for permanent residence.

I understand you. Russia has immigration issues maybe even worse then Canada or the US - we have no border with Commonwealth countries, so millions of people from former USSR come here to earn money. New Russian immigration and citizenship laws are pretty strict, and I find it rational on one hand and unfair one the other. A Soviet officer who's native language is Russian and who served for 30 years must get citizenship immediately after he moves from some Central-Asian republic or so-called Baltic states. I believe that every person who's native language is Russian should get Russian citizenship without all that "permanent residence for 5 years" crap. As far as I know this is the way it is in the Ukraine. Ukraine looks much more civilised and tolerant in visa policy then Russia.

Probably. Regardless, they sure jumped in front of me as far as benefits went...and I was already a Canadian.
My point isn't to bash Canada, it was to show Lada that immigration issues are everywhere, not just the US.
I could write a bunch of stuff about immigration here too....but they aren't personal experiences.

I know you are not hostile. You're actually quite patient. And as I've mentioned, I'm aware of that the situation in regards to immigration are not what they're cracked up to be. Nothing is as easy as it seems, and you choice to stay is yours, and cannot be critisized.
My only point was that difficult or not, immigration was well worth everything we had to go through, and then some. We are not alone, by a long shot. As much as the US screws up when it comes to immigration, I think that overall, it's done more right than wrong.
Lada, as I've said before, is incoherent. He usually misses the point, he translates expressions and metaphors word for word and refuses to listen.
At the very least I can comprehend you.
When you pine, you feel a lingering desire for something that either never was or at one point was and will never be again.

Hey Belle here is how you get to the Soviet Union. Start out in London and head east. When you get to the part of the world where everyone starts whineing and crying over everything you are in France, keep going east.
When you start to glow radioactive you are almost there. When you park your car and come back and a family of Gypsys are living in it and you can't get the police to get them out without paying him a bribe equal to 2 months of your salary, congraduations you are there.

-
Seriously, try it!
One aspect of American values (consume, consume, consume) is now really outdated and not good for the planet - (oh and that goes for Europe too). Our values have created an ecological monster which will doom us all.
And all this talk of Iraq etc will be nothing as compared to the utter mess we are making of our planet.

Complete misunderstanding.
I am doing fine here. And if I'll need to go to the US - I don't think I will do anything like what you suggested, I do have some respect towards myself.
Usual international practice is that visa rules are working both sides, so I am ashamed that my American friends have to pass through the same procedures as Russians that want to go to the US. :( I'll probably not suggest you to join the Army, go to Afghanistan, desert, cross Tajikistan border and join a group of Tajik drug-dealers on a train to Moscow if you want to see Ivan the Great bell-tower.
Ravells: USA now consumes more energy and resources then the rest of the planet.

I think both U.S. and Russia are some what full of watermelon in some areas. Funny how most U.S. citizens will admit to this (same old politics) but Russian's dont seem to mind attacking the U.S. for things that Russia does as well. When all is said and done i can pretty much do whatever the hell i want to in the U.S. short of criminal acts (im poor) and enjoy a life of free will. :)(http://content.barewalls.com/quickview/0587010517q.jpg)
Found this cool poster hyping Russian firepower as the way to victory .

I am totally ashamed of you I thought you were better than that and not just a typical russian racist. You have more respect for your self than to come in illegally, therefore mexicans have no respect for them selves because millions do?Why just because they are brown, have different language...what? Your right you better not come to Amerika ,with veiws like yours and the newer hate speech laws you would find your butt in jail. You must be one of those white russians, come to think of it how did you escape the slaughter stalin perpetrated up on the white russians after ww2.Oh well glad you did but stay out of our country we dont need anymore racist. There are enough of the white bastards around now.

I do respect myself, and I do not jump fences - i try to find the door. If someone barks at me when I try to enter the gates - I'll not try to scale the fence, i'll just walk away. This is what I meant.
You have more respect for your self than to come in illegally, therefore mexicans have no respect for them selves because millions do? - Are you on drugs or what?!
Calling me a racist is really funny :) JFYI: Communist political doctrine includes such a concept as Proletarian Internationalism, and racism was never tolerated in Soviet society.
I am not "white russian", I am half Great-Russian half Small-Russian, if this means anything to you.
Pork, Lada with his problems understanding some of English expressions (sorry, Lada, sometimes you suffer from misunderstanding, both on your and American sides) looks like a torch of common sence and tolerance compared to some comrades here.

I was born in Louisiana. My father was born to Jewish partents but adopted by and Irish man and American woman. On my mom's side my grand mother was 1/8 American Indian, some Scottish in there as well as more Irish, a bit of French and a sprinkling of Italian. I guess you could say I'm a mutt.
There sure are some ignorant people out there on the other side of the pond when it comes to America. Lada I hope you're trolling because you've said some pretty darned idiotic things in this thread, well ok every thread you post in. It's pretty clear that you haven't got a clue about America if you really believe what you've said in this thread.
Do a search on Ellis Island and read some history on immigration in American. We're not called "the melting pot" for nothing.
pretty entardtaining thread :)
[edit]
One of the really cool things about immigration is that we seem to get the best and brightest from all over the world. That is a very large part of why America is as great as it is. It's a testement to our system of government that people can come here from all over the world piss poor and work their way from rags to riches. There are way too many success stories to argue any other point rationally.
God Bless America!

boroda re: communist political doctrine
Boroda in some ways I was just funnin with you about racism. After you said what communist political doctrine was I had to chose between joking more with you or telling you the harsh truth. I have to stand up for the multi millions of people that cant because they were killed by communism. I understand that if you are serious about what you have written in your post that you were taught this from childhood.
Communist political doctrine is a savage, murderious regime. It was ruthless in its persuit and domination of nations and people. The doctrine was very simple, live the way we tell you, believe what we tell you,act as we tell you, exhibit no thoughts of your own,do not believe in God .If you do not follow the doctrine in every way we will torture you and then kill you and your family. If you try to escape we will shoot you on sight. As bad and murderious as nazism was, it was surpasted by communism.Make no mistake nazism was just as blood thirsty as communism, they just were not in power as long.Russia was an evil empire with massive amounts of wmds.Funny now even russia faces a threat worst than communism or nazism...go figure.

You're being far too generous. No matter how poor his English may be, it's not a laguage barrier--it's an understanding barrier. very often somebody would be posting on a subject, Lada would misinterpret completely and proceed to post obstinate opinions on what he construed as the meaning of the original post. His opinions, which are at best irrelevant, often incoherent and generally disjointed, can come across as sense to people that choose to read into it enough. In short, his words are like abstract poetry--you can make of them whatever suits your desire.
But this is all moot anyway, as Lada has been outed as an alterego of Belle, who's been conspiquously absent from the boards since just around Lada's appearance.

Demaw1, first of all - I was joking about Communist political doctrine, joking on your ideas of Russia and Communism.
But seriously, racism in any form was impossible in USSR. Accusing anyone in racism was probably the worst thing to do. Yes, there was an "unofficial" policy of special attitude to Jews, especially after mid-70s when West started all that hype about "human rights" and "evil Soviet regime not letting Jews emigrate". After that almost every Jew was treated as possible emigrant, so they were not welcome on some positions connected with national security and defence.
You ideas of life in USSR are taken from cold-war propaganda. Repeating propaganda stereotypes doesn't look clever. Both systems have their positive and negative sides, and exaggerating bad sides of Soviet system doesn't diminish it's achievements. Live in USSR was not worse or better, it ws just different. I can only advise you to try developing your own opinon based on your own experience and research instead of repeating what they say on TV.
Pork, who was Belle and why did Lada get "banned" (if I understood correctly)?

There must be something wrong with me? I understood what the Author met in his writting.
How hard is it for someone to get the meaning of something that is read? Or am I assuming too much of some of the people in here?

As of 1998, the USA consumed 2.76 E 10 MW-HR of which 38.8% was petroleum. 85% of the total energy was from hydrocarbon chain fuels, adding to greenhouse gasses.
The rest of the world consumed 8.34 E 10 MW-HR of which 40% was from petroleum. 85.8% of the total energy was from hydrocarbon chain fuels, adding to greenhouse gasses.
2.76/11.10 = 24.9% of world energy consumption.
http://energy.cr.usgs.gov/energy/stats_ctry/Stat1.html (http://)
In 2003, The USA total energy use was the equivalent 2297 Million Tons of Oil
The worlds total was 9,741 MTOE
The rest of the world used 9,741 - 2,297 = 7,444 MTOE
2,297 / 9,741 = 23.6% of world energy

My opinions are formed from many different areas including life experainces. I will then try to measure them with guidance from the bible. [opps sorry said a dirty word] Racism was impossible in russia, where did you get that idea. Each person ever born is a little bit bigoted and racist. That is a human condition that has to be controlled.Russia had a lot of unoffical this and that.
The hype of human rights as you say was not just about the jews ,it was about all the people subjected to communist brutality
As a free American I can see the results of communism,I can read anything I want to educate myself which ever way I may lean.I never get upset at what you say because I understand the brain washing youve had since a kid.Bottom line, there is nothing positive about communism.
Saying life in Ussr was no better or worse than America is plain crazy. It is the typical european veiw of the world,a world where evil has been allowed to flurish. You always are giving me advise so I am going to give you some....Stop being part of the problem and become part of the solution.Always remmember the past of communism so you dont repeat it,but let it go and build a good future for Russia,a free people with a goverment more interested in life than death.Russia could be an amazing place, but If the majority of people believe like you she will soon be right back where she was. You will know when you have arrived when the whole world hates you and your stand against evil. good luck, for the sake of my grandchildren when they come.

Mcgroin re: energy
Just a thought,If America couldnt get and use the energy she does would not the whole world go into a depression ,and would not America go into a depression which would make the last one look like a cake walk? Would not a huge portion of the world then suffer from hunger. If any of this is true than I vote to keep things as they are.
This is not meant as a provocative question but an honest one.

Per $ GDP, energy use is trending to be more efficient.
USA is a large portion of the world economy, about equivalent to the EU, and both USA and EU are each equivalent to the combined economies of China, Japan, and South Korea.
Any pertubation strongly effecting any of these three economic regions will cause problems in the other two.

Midnight T RE: quote key
I must admit I know so little about the computer it is silly. I HOPE someday I can live up to xtoronto and your expections. I am to busy to learn much now as in construction you have to make hay when the sun shines and its been shining for a couple years. In Compton where I grew up we had a few type writers at school but if they wernt broken they were stolin.Anyway that was for girls back them. well got to go as I have a custom home in seal beach to bid, nice house,6500 sq.ft. Boy glad I dont have to know the type writer or computer to build it lol I would be in a world of hurt.

Yes, people are bigots inside. But racist, fascist propaganda and propaganda of war were and still are state crimes here. Unfortunately now we have some home-brewn bonehead bigots :(
As for "human rights" - I quote Zbignew Brzezinsky. He said that the whole "human rights" part of a Helsinki declaration was added only to have an instrument of propaganda pressure against USSR, and noone really cared about Jews or "people subjected to communist brutality". So it goes. :(

Saying that USA was a better place then USSR is crazy too. Sorry, to explain you some things I should start from the very beginning, and even then you'll probably not understand some things. Just some ideas: do you know that Cuba now has one of the best healthcare systems, and it's all for free? To build a better country we, Russians, should not abandon everything we had only because it was "evil communism", but try to employ Soviet achievements, but our current regime uses Communist slogan of "destroying the old world completely".
I am happy that Russia refrained from opposing "blue side" in world politics. We'll see where Western powers will arrive in their fight against the rest of the world.

I am sorry I cant answer u because well I have never talked to a true communist, and the realization of certain truths are overwhelming me right now.
One question though. If Cuba is so wonderfull why do so very many people risk their lives and die trying to get to America? Why does cuba kill so many of their own citizens that want to leave?

I have heard him say this in some American TV documentary about "secret wars", CIA vs. KGB. IIRC this film was made by CBS. I was shocked by this revelations. I tried to listen to his words in English, and I am sure that the translation was correct.

I am not a communiust. I don't like modern commies. I don't believe that Communist society can be built as a result of a social revolution.

Russians say: "Some people like priest, some like priest's daughter". Some people prefer to have Coca-Cola and living in Cuban ghettos to Havana Club rum and free medical care.
"Killing so many citizens that want to leave" is another exaggeration.
90% of Soviet people supported "democratic" reforms in late 80s - early 90s. If they could see what will happen after the fall of USSR - most of them probably could be scared to death of what we have now. Here we come back to the question of successfull Western propaganda. The problem is that the collapse was inevitable since 1987-88.

Nice thread, very edjumacating as someone else said ;)
Just my tuppence worth:
America and Americans have alot of things to be proud about. But alot of what is said in the initial quote to this thread is a falsehood, or propaganda.
There are many countries around the world that embody the spirit of true democracy. To imply that 'to know true democracy is to be American' is fairly insulting imo.
To imply that the US 'saved' the Afghans in the 80s is to completely re-write history. As someone else, inadvertently, pointed out, it was done solely for political reasons with no thought or consideration given to the monster the US was helping to create with the Taliban regime and Al Qaeda.
I dont know about your immigration system, but I imagine it is just as good/bad as any other demoratic country.
As I said, you have alot to be proud of (innovation, technology, freedom, tolerance, etc). But that text is in bad taste imo. And you have no more (or less) of the good things about you than any other country in the Western hemisphere, and beyond. The text implies differently.
