President Clinton's national security adviser, Sandy Berger, is the focus of a Justice Department investigation after removing highly classified terrorism documents and handwritten notes from a secure reading room during preparations for the Sept. 11 commission hearings, The Associated Press has learned.
The officials said the missing documents were highly classified, and included critical assessments about the Clinton administration's handling of the millennium terror threats as well as identification of America's terror vulnerabilities at airports to sea ports.
sure, he accidently took the documents that just happened to be critical of Clinton, then inadvertantly "lost" them.
"In the course of reviewing over several days thousands of pages of documents on behalf of the Clinton administration in connection with requests by the Sept. 11 commission, I inadvertently took a few documents from the Archives," Berger said.
sure...
"When I was informed by the Archives that there were documents missing, I immediately returned everything I had except for a few documents that I apparently had accidentally discarded," he said
Yeah....sure.

"Former CIA Director John Deutch was pardoned by Clinton just hours before Clinton left office in 2001 for taking home classified information and keeping it on unsecured computers at his home during his time at the CIA and Pentagon. Deutch was about to enter into a plea agreement for a misdemeanor charge of mishandling government secrets when the pardon was granted."

"Berger and his lawyer said Monday night he knowingly removed the handwritten notes by placing them in his jacket, pants and socks, and also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio."
Can you imaging the hissy fit libs would be having if this was a Republican. "INDEPENDENT COUNSEL" they would be yelling Kerry Kennecy Hillary would be scream Bush KNEW and when. Damn the conspiracy theories would be fling,
Bush loves USB, he hid the docs, Bush blew up the towers etc. Moore would be having an O gasim over it. It would lead every nightly news cast for weeks.

His socks! Blahahahahahah!
Yup, the demstudmuffinliberalpusses would be screaming from the highest mountain about how Bush is trying to cover something up and when the world ends 7 billion years from now, it's Bush's fault.

You're missing the point. These were classified documents. To remove them and store them improperly and without authorization is a security incident. To do it knowingly, and to share them with unauthorized personnel (IF he did) is a Federal offense. When you have a clearance, you receive training every year on handling of classified (which is marked top/bottom and front/back in red block letters, copy or original). Furthermore, any hand-written notes made from a classified source automatically becomes classfied at the level of the source. Sandy Burgler, er, Berger know this.
While I can believe someone accidently walking out with a classified document, shuffled together with unclassifed documents in his portfolio, it is still incredibly negligent. Stuffing his notes into his pants, jacket, and socks (yes, his socks) is a damning indictment of willful misconduct. At the very least his clearance should be immediately pulled (that's what would happen to me) while the investigation was conducted. Has this happened? Not according to any reports I've seen.
-
That looks very serios. Think he will go to jail?
-
Not TOP SECRET, they were code-word, which is the highest level of security. This is a coverup of the greatest magnitude, and it was done willfully and with intent.
-
What's the Big Deal......? I accidentally put things in my socks all the time. Give the guy a break....
-
Steve!! get back in the MA dangit!!

Uh, no, he has already been pardoned. Along with a lot of other criminals, some of which allegedly bought those pardons. Do a search on pardongate if you wanna see America at it's lowest.

nah didnt miss a point i think you misunderstood me. i have a clearance to. he needs to be busted for what he did but people saying its part of some scheme to hide what clinton did i doubt that. as for stuffing things in socks if thats still being reported in three weeks then ill believe it happened. i dont think highly of the guy and i didnt when he was working for clinton and i was active duty military. but im pretty skeptical when it comes to conspiracys. everyone thinks theyre the reincarnation of woodward and bernstein these days.

Does anyone else find it strange that "Socks" disappeared shortly after Clinton left office? And that now Berger's socks are making the news?
Makes a fella stop and think.

Are you implying that the First Cat was sold to the highest international bidder? :D
-
Vor,
Nah...there was a rumor that the "First Cat" was actually a mole for a hostile foreign power.
Berger's actions were an attempt to send a signal that there was more to this than just speculation.
Will be interesting to see how this develops.
Watch your back.
Regards, Shuckins/Leggern
-
Ahh, that seems pretty far-fetched to me, Shickins. I think it's more likely and more plausible that the First Cat(c) was stuffed with intelligence documents and unscrupulously sold on the international spy market. (For more info on the international spy market and to shop for intel, visit the ebay link from the underworldwideweb.) It's easy considering that the contents of diplomatic pet cages are confidential and not subject to search by any foreign power, and I can't blame them for choosing a hand-courier in order to save on international postage rates. Stupid like a bunch of foxes, they are! :D

Actually Vor, if memory serves, an inside source in the CIA stated that Socks was under suspicion because micro-dots containing top-secret intelligence were found in kitty-litter that was disposed of in a slip-shod manner. Heads rolled when it was discovered that agents responsible for screening White House garbage had neglected to sift it properly. Authorities could only speculate on how much information had been deliberatly leaked to foreign intelligence sources prior to this discovery.
Sandy Berger had said, in a private conversation with Bob Woodward, that the whole situation "stank to high heaven."
More to come.

Kerry Camp Accuses White House of Berger Leak (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=615&e=3&u=/nm/20040721/pl_nm/security_berger_dc)
next they say Bush planted the documents on him & the CIA "tortured" him into a confession ...
let's not punish the criminal, let's spin the crime
-
Who will the conservatives rally round when Clinton leaves office?
The answer is ....
Clinton!
:lol

Sometimes pointing out the mistakes of the past help to avoid making the same ones in the future.
-
Actually, Clinton was quite concerned about White House security leaks. He took it upon himself to personally probe certain members of his staff...but apparently came up short. Inside sources say that there was plenty of smoke in the air afterwards.
