...that deserve to have their works on the big screen.
My favorite has always been Fritz Leiber and his "Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser" series of tales.
A close second would be Fred Saberhagen's "Berserker" series.
Your thoughts?
Regards, Shuckins/Leggern
-
Berserkers are made for the big screen, I agree.
I'd also like to see some alternate history stuff done, like Turtledove's 'WorldWar' series (aliens invade at the height of WWII).
-
I'd like to see "Ender's Game".

Asimov has always been my fav. I just can't imagine anyone doing justice to the Foundation series on film.

Methinks Sandy's got a new pinup poster to go opposite his toilet.:aok
edit: I'd like to see some of Salvatore's books brought to the big screen. Especially his latest series (something about swords...)
-
Oh man, where to start? One of my favorites dealing with time travel is Gregory Benford's "Timescape". James P. Hogan's "Giant" series was good. Certainly Asimov's Foundation series. Stephen Donaldson's "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" might work. Fred Saberhagen's "Book of Swords" would likely be a hit. The list could go on and on.
-
Hienlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress"
anyone ever see that B version of"The Puppet Masters" ?
It actually stuck to the book pretty well, unlike the butcher job they did on "Starship Troopers"
-
This film genre did not get much respect from Hollywood until the arrival of Spielberg and Lucas in the late 1970s. It is rapidly hitting it's stride, as evidenced by the popularity of I,Robot, Lord of the Rings, Signs, and other films.
Anyways, it's going to be interesting to see what hits the big screen next.

The "Dark Tower" series by Steve King.

I would have agreed with ya but the last book or two have kinda fizzled out.

Arthur C. Clarke
I particularly liked Childhoods End (a basis in some ways for 2001) and Rendezvous with Rama. He has some really chilling short stories too.
Charon

Stanislaw Lem.
Philip Kindred Dick.
Robert Anson Heinlein.
Eric Frank Russel.

Dammit....now I gotta go dig 'em out and read 'em again. I havent read those in years. Right now I am in the middle of John Marco's second series. His first was pretty good but I dont really have an opinion on the second yet.....

Asimov for sci-fiction.
Tolkein (The Hobbit) and David Eddings (The Belgariad) for fantasy writers.

Ringworld
Elric Of Melnebone
The Forever War
Foundation Series
Enders Game
Enders Shadow

You're welcome Slimm!
-
Walter Jon Williams
Either "Voice of the Whirlwind" < - By far the best Sci / fi book I've read or the more widely known "Hardwired". Voice is a shorter, tighter story IMHO.

Douglas Adams was one of the wittiest and funniest writers in modern history, IMO. Here's a link to the upcoming film:
http://hitchhikers.movies.go.com/main.html
Looks like it may be ok, but some of the cast...
-
Someone mentioned 'Forever War'. Same author did an excellent, almost made for film book called 'Buying Time'. Joe Haldeman, great book.
-
'Ender's Game' (as already mentioned)
Foster's 'Spellsinger' (we have the special effects to do it now!)
Dickson's 'Tactics of Mistake' or anything Dorsai. (technology would have to be updated)
Le Guin's 'Wizard of Earthsea' quartet (without the dreadful 'Tombs of Atuan') and 'The Left Hand of Darkness' (would be stunning)
The McCaffery 'Pern' novels. (instead they made that POS 'Reign of Fire')
I saw a made for TV movie of the novella 'Alien Mine' and they did a terrific job of it. With the effects they have now, a movie of 'The Sandkings', one of the best and scariest SF stories ever written IMHO would go down a treat.
Curval I'm shocked at your David Eddings selection! Talk about the epitome of the Tolkien ripoff industry! ;)
Ravs
-
Roo...next holiday on the beach I'll grab a copy.
Ravs...wash your mouth out with soap, Sir. Eddings took the genre to a new level by adding some real character in his characters.:p
-
Dan Simmons
Joe Haldeman
Peter F. Hamilton
-
Dont forget Robert A. Heinlein...
Read most of Asimov's stuff as well as alot of other scfi.
-
Darkover Series- Marion Zimmer Bradley
Wheel of Time Series - Robert Jordan
Harry Freeking Potter - JK Rowlands
Tolkien goes without saying
There must be a dozen more, but thats good for starters.
-
If The Hobbit makes it to the big screen expect it to break all box-office records.
-
Neal Stephenson
-
For science fiction, if we are talking about books, atm I really like Tad Williams Otherland, be kinda neat to see that as an animated movie or series due to the fact that some things arn't humanly possible to be done, like someones arms being torn off, :) .
For fantasy, I really like Robert Jordan, and JK Rowling, of course the reason I like Rober Jordan, is because J.R.Tolkein was pretty cool too, but I never did get past the boring part in the 1st book, got audio CD's now and will begin reading it after I finish up Mountain of Black Glass by Tad Williams.

How about Ringworld?
-
Michael Moore.
-
Terry Brooks - Shannara series.
-
Wot? No mention of H.G Wells? (The Time Machine, War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man) I think it was quite an accomplishment to exist as a science fiction writer in Victorian times.
BTW - is the Azimov family from CA? Just asking, as I had dinner with Azimov's niece some years ago in San Francisco. Nice girl, red haired, very polite.
-
Beetle,
Quite right...a modern remake of War of the Worlds would rock!
-
William Gibsons work.
One of his short stories Dogfight was great. Basically it was about low lifes playing a WW1 flight sim on the 'matrix' in a post Word War 3 world.

yup, would be cool, but he does get repetitive, guess his 1st one would be cool....
some company just bought the rights to make the 1st Robert Jordan movie(Wheel of Time series)
Terry Goodkinds Sword of Truth series....but his best are the first 3 books, the rest are Jordan rip-offs.
I wanna see Rogue Squadron on screen, now that would be nice.
-
HG Wells,
Jules Verne,
Heinlein
Frank Herbert
-
Well my opinion, Terry Brooks is basically JRR Tolken with alot more details in his books.
;)

wrong, that would be Robert Jordan(quote from NY Times best seller list)

From what I've been reading, seems this Paul "Voss" Hinds guy is a pretty decent fantasy writer.

Yep "Time Enough For Love " is a classic
-
Forever War
Shannara series
A Hymn to Battle
Snowcrash
Gibson's trilogy(forgot the names)
-
Gibson wrote several but none in a series that I've read. You guys are bringing back a lot of memories. These memories might be spoiled by a movie that didn't give the proper attention and respect to many of the titles mentioned. Most are probably better off left as books.
-
Heinlein's 'The Door Into Summer' is an excellent book too, very touching. It'd make a good film.
For the person who mentioned H. Beam Piper, what about the Fuzzies? :D I have a couple of prints of Fuzzy art from the guy who did the book covers framed in my house, great stuff.
-
Piers Anthony's "Bio of a Space Tyrant" series was quite a bit different from his Xanth series and most of his other stuff. Might be a bit harsh for a movie(s) but I enjoyed reading 'em.
-
Robert Silverberg's "Lord Valentine's Castle" is worthy.

I loved the novella Johnny Menmonic....not the POS movie with Keanu 'Neo' Reeves.

Interestingly enough... if you ask Dan Simmons what the roots of SciFi are, he points to Homer.
-
Here's the deal, I think Ringworld is actually pretty boring. I used to think it was the cat's pajamas, but it turned out I was really more fascinated with the concept of the Ringworld itself then I was about the story. Louis Wu & Friends on a road trip... it's ok.
Here's the Niven stuff I'd really like to see on the big screen:
1. The Mote in God's Eye
2. Footfall
3. Lucifer's Hammer
Notice a trend? These are all books he co-wrote w/ Jerry Pournelle. With few exceptions both Pournelle and Niven have serious flaws when writing alone. But when they write as a team, wonderful things happen.
Imagine the USS Archangel Michael at the end of Footfall, now THAT would be an astonishing bit of film. I can replay that battle in my head at will, years after reading the book. Or the Lenin in Mote engaging the Macarthur after its... 'capture', and trying to pump enough energy into the shields to get a breakthrough. Or Harry Red on his Harley ride across the broken remains of the USA after the comet impact, hooking up w/ what's left of civilization.
These are film moments for sure.
(PS, there are a couple of Niven books that might be good alone, but not many: Protector is one, Man/Kzin stuff might be another)

Ah, well, only read the first two of those. They were different enough that I didn't see the continuity or at least after so long now I don't remember it. May have to read the third one of these days, any good or will it be too dated?

Mmm it will be a bit dated I'm afraid.
Gscholz I'll go see those movies, but I don't expect them to be 1/10th as rich as the books are...
-
Niven and Pournelle's : Beowulf's Children, and Footfall
Moorcock's: Elric Series
Peter F. Hamilton: The Reality Dysfunction Series
John Steakley; Armor
They're making Princess of Mars into a movie? Can't wait to see who plays Deejah Thoris!
-
Yes.' Dogfight' was in Burning Chrome Book DeSelys.
The dudes girlfiend rigged his simstense machine(girlfiend was a hash head) playing THAT GAME...SpadsVStwittlers on the matrix.

Anyone mention Philip José Farmer's Riverworld? Seems there is something being done on this: http://www.scifi.com/onair/scifipictures/riverworld/
Seems to be in the past, missed it.

One of the best tales in Fred Saberhagen's "Berserker" series is a short story called "Wings Out of Shadow."
The story is about an inter-stellar "aircraft-carrier" escorting a convoy of refugee ships through Berserker controlled space. In an effort to compensate for the faster reaction times of enemy berserker pilots, the earth-men on this carrier are experimenting with a new system allowing their pilots to fight while asleep, since the unconscious brain isn't bound by conventional laws of physics.
The ship is briefly captured by the berserkers. The sole survivor eventually devises a way to defeat them...but I ain't gonna tell ya what it is. Read it for yourself.
-
Ah yes, forgive me I wont get it right, its been 15 years, but....insert drum roll here..... Anne Mc cafferty. The whole series of books starting with The Dragon Riders of Pern
I dont know if that is her name or if it is spelled right, I loved the books but just cant recall.
-
Ah yes, enjoyed both the Berserker and Dragon Riders series. Rick Cook had a pretty good series, free download from here: http://www.baen.com/library/
-
I remember liking the Null-A series by A.E. Van Vogt though I can't recall if I read them all.
