So if there was a second AH made in a different era to WW2 what do you reckon would be the best?
E.G. I would love to play in a mid cold war era with F104s, B-52s, Vulcans, Victors, EE Lightnings, F4s, MiG 21s etc...
-
Another old topic brought up for no reason. Who cares? How about that? AH2 in it's current form would suck as any other era war, espeically jets.
Maybe this is how AW died... The current game sucked, but everyone wanted to talk about AW Vietnam, or whatever it was supposed to be.
Let's finish getting AH2 up to today's game standards (graphics, gameplay, etc.)
-
I know WW2 is the best time setting but I'm just trying to find some peoples opinion. I'm not trying to bring an alternative AH about, I wanna find out what people think.
-
J318 dont listen to that cranky bastage. You post whatever you want. I imagine a ww3 based game would be intense. Lots of technology...circa 1985 would be sweet.
-
WW1.
-
I would say Vietnam would be 2ND best (next to WW2). And people say that with missiles it would be too easy, but its not as simple as they think. SAMs would be hell though.
Anything with today's setup wouldnt work all that well. "There is a bogey 30 miles south of us, heading to intercept. WHAT THE! CHECK 6!" Then on Channel 1 you see "YOU STEALTH DWEEB!"
-
WW 1. When men were men.
I think WW2 is the best, but would enjoy any era on a limited basis. :aok
-
Korea would be awesome.

lmao!
Well so we know how you feel.....
But anyway, the reason the game is how it is is because WWII marked an end to an era of skies that were filled with planes for miles. Pilots still had to rely on guns and guns alone. They couldn't launch a missle that was targeted at the opponent. Sure it's more involved than that but not nearly as much as guns alone. SAM's would be a pain in the bellybutton too. Besides, WWII is cooler

Not only would a new era broaden the fun factor, it would also be reaching out to the jet propelled crowd, and it could be very lucrative combined with AH 2.
I think the true jet era was Korea and Vietnam, with MiGs and F-86s etc...
The only problem here is that other jet sims are very advanced to compete with. However, this is where a living breathing community would be the part that would win many over.
I think AH is the best WWII sim. I also think that most true simmers go for the prop planes.
In AW for all the 7-8 years I played it, the Korea arena never really fully took off, from my point of view. I never understood this because it was truely great fun, high adrynalin, fast thinking.
*IF* it's easy to convert most of AH2 into a jet sim branch I would think it would be a smart thing to consider.
I'm a firm beleiver of never keeping all my eggs in one basket. ;-)

If your in 56 squadron flying an SE5a, then you might be winging with old Wilks! lol
Although if some of these wern't german planes, i would have a tough choice between the camel, the SE5, the Albatros, and of course, the daddy of WW1, the fokker Dr7 (the Red barron tri-plane)

was there ever a Fokker DR.7, or am i getting confused with the DR.1?
and yes, that sopwith triplane is so pretty, but its not a camel :)

Sure the 412th could fly high and run in jets just as well as they do now in Pee51s... ;)
-
Korea just guns, guts, and air brakes
-
Do Korea and of course perk the F-86 and MiG-15 so everyone will fly P-51s and Yak-9s.
Actually, since Korea was the last of the pure gun vs. gun fights, that could be a nice arena for Aces High III.

There was a butterer D.VII mechanic. was a very good late war fighter.
there was a fight in October 1918 in which William Barker fought 60 single handedly in a Sopwith Snipe.
On October 27, 1918, while flying alone, he encountered sixty Fokker D.VIIs flying in stepped formation. In this hreoic battle with Jagdgeschwader 3, Barker shot down four enemy aircraft despite serious wounds to both legs and his elbow. Fainting from pain and loss of blood, he managed to crash land his Snipe safely behind British lines. Barker received the Victoria Cross (VC) for this action.
Victoria Cross (VC)
"On the morning of the October 27, 1918, this officer observed an enemy two-seater over the Foret de Mormal. He attacked this machine and after a short burst it broke up in the air. At the same time a Fokker biplane attacked him, and he was wounded in the right thigh, but managed, despite this, to shoot down the enemy aeroplane in flames. He then found himself in the middle of a large formation of Fokkers who attacked him from all directions, and was again severely wounded in the left thigh, but succeeded in driving down two of the enemy in a spin. He lost consciousness after that, and his machine fell out of control. On recovery, he found himself being again attacked heavily by a large formation, and singling out one machine he deliberately charged and drove it down in flames. During this fight his left elbow was shattered and he again fainted, and on regaining consciousness he found himself still being attacked, but notwithstanding that he was now severely wounded in both legs and his left arm shattered, he dived on the nearest machine and shot it down in flames. Being greatly exhausted, he dived out of the fight to regain our lines, but was met by another formation, which attacked and endeavored to cut him off, but after a hard fight he succeeded in breaking up this formation and reached our lines, where he crashed on landing. This combat, in which Major Barker destroyed four enemy machines (three of them in flames), brought his total successes to fifty enemy machines destroyed, and is a notable example of the exceptional bravery and disregard of danger which this very gallant officer has always displayed throughout his distinguished career." VC citation, London Gazette, November 30, 1918

Ernest udet wasnt to bad either
had about 60 kills by the end of ww1
-
Blast ya, now I'm really missing AW. WW1 Fokker DR1 what a ride :D remb the fun in TA , flying fokker Dr1 vs the WW2 rides, hehehe.
hmmmm AH2 engine codes etc , DR1 just might own any WW2 ride. of course the DR1 pilot would be hollering "runstuka, can't handle this slow wannabe plane?"
hmmm me thinks AH2 needs the P-26 PeaShooter. hey, it did get some kills, in the pacific during WW2. :D

BIGGLES FLEW A TIGER MOTH!
If there were to be a WW1 AH, you gotta have a Zeppelin just to keep us bomber buffs happy :P lol

IMO, WWI is fun, the planes are slow enough to do just about anything in them.
But I always saw WWI as a thing no one really took seriously, just had a lot of fun dinking around.
WWI would be a wasted trip. It would never get the use to justify it's building it or servers.
Maybe if HTC has everything under control someday and are bored and built a small WWI arena with ac it would be fun. But I'd rather watch them go the direction they're going. EVen Jets have a hard tiem competing with WWII prop planes. Jets would be much easier to justify, they go from past to current. ;-)
One problem is HTC and AH is billed as a WWII co\sim. There would definately have to be some realistic advertising and long term planning to get a different era to take off *right*.
F-80+ and MiGs are just crazy high octain fun. I will say after dogfighting in jets for a while, rackin up kills in a prop plane seems to come at will. ;-) for me anyway. With jets your thinking is MUCH faster, faster decisions, SA goes through the roof, then when you hit props your thinking slows down and better decisions flow like melted butter.
Blah blah blah...
Remember to turn off the light when you leave.
gnight

:rofl I have to agree, I think if we got too far into modern technology we would have problems, Imagine how big in size the maps would have to be to account for how much ground jets can cover in no time at all. I think a modern day version would be fun but it would take alot to really make it worth playing, as stated SAMs would not be a big plus.

I might reference you to Biggles of the fighter squadron, Biggles goes to war, Biggels in France to say but a few that he flew camels in...
but im sure he flew a tiger moth sometimes too.
moths were mainly used for recon in ww1 if at all, and biggles was definitely a full blown fighter pilot.
-
Actually the Tigermoth was the RAF's WW2 trainer. Some were fitted top fly remote control as drones.

Yes, it would be awesome. The plane set would be fairly extensive too.
Four versions of the F-86 (A, D, E and F)
Two versions of the MiG-15 (Standard and Bis)
Three versions of the F-84 (D, E and G)
F-80C
Two versions of the F9F (-3,-5)
Three versions of the F2H (-2,-3,4)
P-51D
F4U-4B
F4U-5
F4U-5N
F7F-3N
Sea Fury
Meteor F.8
Seafire FR Mk.47
F-82F and G
A-26B
B-29A
F3D-2 SkyKnight
Yak-7
Yak-9P
La-9
La-11
IL-10 Updated Sturmovik
AD-1 Skyraider (Monster Jabo)
C-47
UF-1 (SAR amphibian)
And about another two dozen I didn't list including helicopters.
Could be great fun... But I suspect that it would never draw the numbers required to justify the dollars and time required to get it online. Not to mention HTC's limited staff is already up to their ears working on getting AH2 updated and expanded.
Nonetheless... I would certainly play.
My regards,
Widewing

If I sold everything I own, I could afford a tire change, maybe.
Bumba for pres!! ya, FREE BEER!!!!

Great plane list, Widewing. Add the tanks and other gv's and Aces Korea would be one heck of an ultimate pre-missile battle.
Aces Korea is even worth developing before Aces High III, Tour of Duty II, and Aces Low (WWI).
-
Korea scenarioo could be done on the cheap by just adding a later model F86 and a Mig15bis for fighters and of course the B29 which could have a place in AH WW2 timefrime. P51, Yak9U, La7, Me262, Spit 14 and Tempest would fill in nicely for the older props and the meteor. F84 and F80 would be less important for our purposes iMO.

Love the concept, it would be translatable to the AH2 game world with no major modifications and would certainly be interesting to play. Have it start in 1930 up until the Spanish Civil war. I-16s vs Gladiators vs He 51's. Just imagine the turn and burn possibilities.
Jets woud be great but the problem would be getting the A/A, A/G and SAM missles to work correctly. The would almost have to be an AI driven missle and I don't know if the game engine could support such a thing without a major overhaul. I think that killed AW Vietnam more than anything else. A modern jet sim would be hard enough to code for offline use (look at the problems Strike Fighters and LOMAC have had) but for online only I can imagine it would be a nightmare, especially with some of the player visibility limits and the coding changes needed.
WW1 is fine but it never really caught on that much with Dawn of Aces. It was fun but it didn't generate the following related to the work put into the game.
-
Korea
I don't mean to go off topic, but how from the pictures above did you not shoot your prop off? Just wondering because the guns look like they shoot straight through the prop.

Mine,.....
Early in WWI all weapons were mounted above the wing or were hand held then the Axis invented the interrupter gear, basicly a cam mounted on the propeller shaft that prevented the weapon from discharging when the prop blade was lined up with said weapon.
Eventually the Central powers lost an AC where the alliance could get it and thtechnology became wide spread....
Of note are all the WWII AC that fire through the prop, 109s, 190s, Laggs, ect,ect,ect....
Gunns

That's why we're basically talking Korea High, last of the airplane fights without missiles, ground or air.
