Title: Combined Wireless ADSL Modem/routers
Post by: Dowding on July 22, 2004, 11:10:38 AM
Can anyone recommend a good one that gets good results playing with AH and other games? I've been looking at some Net Gear and D-Link products. I'm obviously most interested in ping/packet loss - my computer is across the hall from where the modem and phone line will be. Thanks.

Cant help ya much here, but Skuzzy did have a thread about
routers and he made a comment about Netgear not being so good for AH2.  May want to ask Skuzzy about his choice

I have the D-link DI-624 router and the DWL-G520 adapter and haven't had any problems with them playing AH.  My modem and router are also located down a hall in another room.  My modem, looking for a replacement as I type, is another story.  The RCA modem Comcast gave me is a POS!

Personally, I do not care for any of the consumer grade routers.  I built my own, so I cannot make any recommendations.

Make sure whatever you get uses "Stateful" packet inspection.
That way it will open up ports for game only if the replies come back on the same port it was requested on.
I use an SMS2804WBR - Works great apart from a VPN from it. It locks up.
You could use one of them and some omni or uni directional attenaes (i.e. Hawking ones).
Furthest wireless client from my main router is going through 3 walls and still gets 54Mb/s with the replacement antennaes.

I have a D-Link DSL-604+. Works great. 4x100Mb/s RJ45 ports, Wi-Fi 11 Mb/s (with another Wi-Fi D-link adapter: 22Mb/s), 256 bits WEP, MAC address control.

Only problem: I can't make it invisible but it isn't an issue as I don't have a server at home.

Haven't noticed a ping time loss when I switched from my ADSL modem.

Thanks guys. Perhaps I should pay for a phone line extension installation and bang one in the small room. Thanks anyway.

What kind of Linux set up do you have for your router?

I use the Slackware distribution and setup the various ipfilters/ipchains manually.  It DHCP's to get my IP address and then I have a forced lease update every 4 hours (have had the same IP address since I rebooted back in 10/2003).
The firewall only allows specific ports into the network and does not broadcast any ports from the local LAN.  It is also configured to prevent async connections from the Internet.

The system is a 600Mhz P3 with 256MB of ram.  I have it configured to handle SMTP (outbound email with aliasing), POP3 (inbound with SPAM/Virus checks), DNS (for the local network), Babble (a chat/IM server/client I wrote) and a test HTTP/PHP (I mess around with this stuff) server.

I had a linksys and it didnt work.  Then I gotta netgear and had no trubble whatever with it.  Later on discovered the linksys needed some firmware upgrades to function with my isp so maybe not thier fault.  But they sure didnt help much in the customer support area.  Very generic, static help guides.  If it wasnt a common problem, they didnt know.  And I think thier customer service office is composed if 12 year olds from a distant land.
