Found this pics online and noticed 4 BIG guns protruding from the wings. Anyone know if these are pictures of a real CHOG?
Thanks (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
Notice the guy in this picture staring at the guns. maybe he was having fond memories (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

No.
It is a Bhog. F4U4b, that is. Four bladded propeller, F4U1 has only 3 blades
-
From the pics I have seen, that looks like a F4U-4........did not they go to a 4-bladed prop on the -4?
Not that I am an authority on the Hog...... (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

Cool. So are they 20mm cannons though? They sure look nasty! Buwhahahahahaaaaa
<This message was brought to you by the "Save the CHOG" foundation which specializes in blatant advertizing and support for any Corsair with cannons! I mean really...who wouldn't want bullets that explode on impact? (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif) >

Hi
Thats not an F4U4! Its an F4U5 or F4U7, it clearly has the twin cheek cowl intakes of the 5s and 7s , rather than the 4s single lower cowl intake.
thanks GRUNHERZ
-
It's a F4U-5, they were the only model with the dual intakes(at 4 and 8 o'clock) on the cowling.
The F4U-7(94 of them) was built for the French Navy, they were based on the AU-1(F4U-6) airframe but had the same engine and cowling with the single chin intake as on the F4U-4.
-
It looked like Kurt Tank's hand there on the gun mount......

Actually Juzz, that is an F4U-4 airframe. It's kinda a crossbreed tho. One of the fortunes of restoration. Looked this particular F4U over many-a-time in Galveston.
And to you hispano dweebs, you can have this one because those are just four pieces of pipe used to simulate the M5's (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/tongue.gif)

Btw thats at Scholes Field, Galveston, and Sonnva-squeak-second-class's tail to the right (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
And the old guy staring at the guns, why, he's a 190 driver, cursing the those evil guns (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/tongue.gif)

This airplane is an F4U-5. Notice the side cheek scoops on the engine cowl.

If that's the same one i've seen at the air show in Houston it's an F4u-5n or at least that's what it says on the bottom of the tail just under the H-stab.

cowling flaps, they open up for better cooling when down low, or running on the ground.

Yeah, without guys like Jig, these planes would never be washed and the airlines porta-poties would never be emptied (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
Actually, Jig has a tendency to impress all of us in 33rd with his aviation history knowledge. He knows more about most planes than guys 3-4 times his age who served in the air force (army air corps...no joking here) (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
I am continually amazed how he is able to recite plane stats from the top of his head.

Yeah well I pay for it. That's a 40 mile trip every few weekends. But at least they let me in the museum free now.

Sounds horrible though. Thing sounds like a car engine it's so smooth.
F4F has a much healther pop-clank-BAM sound to it. Most inlines aren't even as quiet as that F4U. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/tongue.gif)

DC-3.......sigh......
I've flown in a few of them up north.
(northwest territories)
They still make great freight haulers.
Not only in museums quite yet !
The first time I flew in one, I was amazed at the number of plates behind the copilot, showing each time it was checked out.
They had run out of room and the plates were overlapping and all over ther place !
1946,47,48,49,50,...1981...
It's one thing to know how old these birds are, but it was another to actually SEE it.
They are getting old though.
A helo pilot friend of mine saw one fold it's wings in flight. (The crew didn't survive) (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif)

Snoopi

Hey Snoopi...you were a lucky passenger onboard Buffalo Airways huh??
My brother flew DC-3 (C-47) for Buffalo a few years ago. I'm pretty sure all were older than he was (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/biggrin.gif)
