How do I change my e-mail address so that the game knows where I now am?
Use the SET ADDRESS command. To do so, simply SIGNON to the game in an e-mail message and provide a line of the form:
SET ADDRESS [newAddress[,otherAddress]...]
Any Address data that you provide should be a valid e-mail address. If you do not specify a newAddr, the e-mail address from which you sent the message will be used. By providing multiple addresses (joined by commas, with no whitespace between the addresses, you may direct that the game send all e-mail to you into more than one mailbox.
So....
send email to dpjudge@diplom.org
SIGNON
SET ADDRESS nash@work.com,nash@home.com

Be quiet, Mr. Pink. ;)
-
This is an outrage!
:)
Can't wait to find out who gets what countries. That maps looks interesting. Some get countries with a TON of supply centers, some get extremely little, and others, like Great Britain, have a ton but only a few here, a couple there...
-
Haha, Mr. Pink, that sounds like Mr. P*ssy or something!
-
Nash can we call you Mr. Boobie? Just wondering or should it be Mr. Bouncy Boobie?
-
Depends....
If I'm France it'd be Monsieur Bouncing Booby.
If I'm Great Britain it'd be Lord Bouncing Booby.
If I'm Central America it'd be 5 bucks a half hour.
-
Who does number 2 work for?
-
You just made me think of Tom Arnold. Go to hell.

f* you!, you're acting like you're 7 or something.
Is there a 7 yet?

Anyone know if this map has one?

damn :(
Then i want prussia. or russia

You mean RealPolitik?
Not sure if it will handle this map variant. There should be a map available on the DPJudge page.

Yeah, that's the one.
Whatcha mean by "There should be a map available on the DPJudge page"? Some other program like it?

Be seeing you...

Here's hoping I don't get England. That power looks like its going to have a target on its back.

I honestly hope that I can land the CSA or some other small power. This looks like its going be fun.

Haven't heard from Dowding yet, so it's time to plug the next alternate in.
XtremJ , you ready to step up to the plate?
Please email me at jdahlen@us.ibm.com for the info.
Pyton, if he doesn't reply by tomorrow morning, then you're next on the alternate list.

Thanx again, banana. I truly appreciate the effort.

Test message sent.
Still waiting for fd-ski to join the game, and for ExtremJ to send me an email.
-
Got the test message.
-
Just singed in.
Sorry for the delay, you got me in the "after work / dinner out in town" time :)
Wonder if i'll get russia again :)
-
I didn't get the test email at work, so I've obviously done something wrong.
I've been trying to set it up manually here from work, usinging the signon, set address, signoff method, but each time I send the email to the dpjudge, the reply comes back:
"No game 'club_imp' active."
It's somehow not recieving the "o" in oclub_imp.
I've tried about 10 different things, and turned off spell check... but the 'o" is still getting stripped off, somewhere along the way.
Can someone else try giving this a shot to see if it works?
Send an email to dpjudge@diplom.org and type in the body of the email:
SIGNON oclub_imp
SIGNOFF
And lemme know what kind of reply you get back.
Cheers.
-
Until the game starts, you may not be able to do it.
Or... you could try putting your power number in front of "oclub"
something like:
signon 6oclub_imp
blah blah
-
got the message...
-
If you need me the address is akuusi cc.hut.fi
-
nash,
I think you have to add the password of the game at the end.
JOIN oclub_imp pwn3d

Also, it's Join first not signon.
Try that, it worked for me last night.

Am I too late? I don't have internat access at weekends currently and mondays are always too busy to use the net at work.

Nash, I just successfully did this, so the correct incantation is:
SIGNON oclub_imp
SET ADDRESS
SIGNOFF
So, let's assume you are power #6, your password is bugger, and the email addresses you want to have the judge send to are nash@home.com and nash@work.com
If you want the judge to send to multiple addresses, sepearate the two addresses with a comma, but no spaces.
Your incantation would be:
SIGNON 6oclub_imp bugger
SET ADDRESS nash@home.com,nash@work.com
SIGNOFF

Dowding, just sent you the info. Welcome aboard.
Pyton, thanks for being here for us, but As soon as Dowding joins, we're full. I'll come find you on AGW if someone drops out.

I'm in and the game has started!
-
Gentlemen, here's a little explanation of the rules I've chosen for the game. Feel free to make alternate suggestions if you find something objectionable.
Press: WHITE_GREY: This means that you can choose to send any and all press anonymously. This can come in handy when you want to suggest something to another power, yet you don't want them to know who suggested it. NO_LATE_RECEIVE: This means that if you miss a deadline and are late with your orders, you cannot receive any private press from another country. This rule is in place to encourage you to get your orders in in a timely manner.
Secrecy: LIST_WAITERS: This rule means that if you check the box labeled "wait for deadline before processing", everyone will know you are doing this. The reason I put this rule into effect is to encourage you all to not check that box unless absolutely necessary, in order to keep the game moving. If I see someone that continues to keep that box checkmarked, I will be contacting that person for an explanation on why they are doing so.
Timing: At the top of the game screen, you'll notice this: AT 13:00 DAYS −MTWTF− GRACE 1D This means that every deadline will happen at 13:00 Eastern time, and deadlines will only occur during the traditional work week. No deadlines will happen on a Saturday or Sunday. GRACE 1D means that if you miss a deadline, you will have 24hrs to get your orders in before CIVIL_DISORDER ensues in your country. As game master, I have a duty to keep the flow of the game moving. Consequently, I reserve the right to remove the 1 day grace period if I feel that someone is abusing it. There's nothing more frustrating as a player than having to wait on someone who misses a deadline. Please do your utmost to get your orders in before the deadline, so that the game moves along at a steady pace.
Late Power Handling: CIVIL_DISORDER: Your country will enter into civil disorder if you miss a deadline, and the 1 day grace period expires. If this happens during a movement phase, all of your units will issue a HOLD order. If it's during a retreat phase then CD_RETREATS goes into effect. This means that the dpjudge will retreat any dislodged units randomly, preferably into supply centers. If your country enters civil disorder during a winter build phase, you waive any opportunity to build units. This could be disastrous for you, so please note that missing a deadline is not a good idea.
With all that being said, I am a reasonable game master, so if you are going to be gone on vacation for a week, just send me press and ask for a deadline extension. I will then change the current deadline to a time that allows you at least one day to give your orders once you return. I'm perfectly willing to be accommodating for you on this, as long as you don't abuse it. This game is going to take months anyway, so we want to keep it moving along as fast as possible.
If you need to drop out of the game due to unforseen circumstances, then it's your responsibilty to find a replacement who will take over for you. By joining the game, everyone here is expecting you to fulfill your obligation as a ruler, and see the thing through either to your glorious victory, or to your humiliating exile to Easter Island. This game involves back stabbing your friends and getting back stabbed by your friends, so just assume now that you will get stabbed....and you will like it! :)
Speaking of strategy, since we are playing the Imperial map, I'm not going to be of much help. But from my limited experience playing Diplomacy so far, there is one difference between players who are alive at the end, and players who are eliminated early: The players who survive are the ones who are the communicators, the ones who make and influence friends from turn one, and continue to converse with their friends, AND their enemies. Remember, today's ally could be tomorrow's enemy, and vice versa.
If you need anything, you know where to find me.
Good luck to all, it's going to get pretty ugly in a hurry. :D

Think I've got this correct. Please let me know if I made any errors:
CSA- Reschke
Brazil- Habu
Great Britain no.6
USA- Nefarious
Russia- Nuke
China- Nash
Turkey- Sandman
France- Bodhi
Holland- SOB
Prussia- Sling
Japan- B17Skull12
Austria- fd-ski
Mexico- Dowding

In order to be able to zoom the map in, you'll have to use the PDF map.
Click on the view button next to the text "By Season" (PDF)
-
The downside is that the PDF doesn't display supply centers.
Use the "imperial2.gif" file to see those, I assume.
-
Does the map have the variouse supply centers marked on it for all the countries or is that a hit or miss situation for us?
-
The .gif file found in the diplom resources has all supply centres marked, including differentiation between neutral and home centres.
-
Yep found that just a moment ago thanks Dowding.

Yes, it sure is. And I recommend it. If everyone would just make sure the check box labeled "wait for deadline before processing" is NOT checked, then the turn will be processed immediately after the last player has issued their orders.
Sometimes, it is desirable to wait until the deadline to have the orders processed. But in general, all of you should leave the box unchecked unless absolutely necessary.
-
When you check "Email Recipt" will you get a copy of your orders in your email box..
Also...
I'm using the PDF Imp map, do I download this every turn to show movements of forces?

I have tried it 6 different ways and none of them work....I keep getting error emails back from the DPJudge. Your quote above shows an @ in the verbage on the first line...that gave me an error. I tried it without the @....that gave me an error. I tried it with a space between prussia and oclub_imp....error. I tried it without a space.....error. I give up. I guess I will just suffer and not be able to get emails at work.

I typically answer my press via an email client. This way, I can read the press and ensure that I cover all the topics. It looks something like this:
signon toclub_imp password
press to a
blah blah blah
endpress
signoff
I'm wondering though... what's the abbreviation for each power?
I know that:
Turkey = t
Austria = a
Russia = r
etc...
What are the other countries? I don't think it's just the first letter... China and CSA share first letters. Any clues or did I miss the info somewhere?
TIA

Sandman, because we have two or more countries with the same first letter, my instructions are using the "alternate" method.
Tell you what, guys. Send me an email at jdahlen@us.ibm.com, include both email addresses you want press sent to, and your password, and I'll do it for you. I was able to do this for Nash this morning, and it worked.

I sent the question to the designer of the variant. His response:
That's a good question. All of the games I've been involved in, either as a
player, GM, or observer, wrote the country names out longhand (CSA as CSA).
So let's figure this out...
E - England
H - Holland
F - France
P - Prussia
A - Austria
R - Russia
T - Turkey
C - China
J - Japan
U - USA
S - CSA
X - Mexico
B - Brazil
Unfortunately, the Confederates don't get the first letter of their country
name as all the others do, but it works out. For organizational purposes, I
tend to list them by continent, starting with Europe and going east. That
way, you'll always know that S is the Confederate States of America...

By the way, I was all exicted to read the broadcasts today, so I brought my laptop to work, downloaded all my home email onto the notebook, then left it at work :(
So I don't remember some of my privite messages. I'll be able to get them tomorrow.
guys, this game should be a blast.

Nuke here is the link to the map in .pdf format. Its the easier one for me to move around on but doesn't show supply centers.

SOB, I like it! Thanks, I'll probably use that map
I have a newbie question. Are suppy centers marked as circles on that map? Also, when you capture a neutral supply center, does is become a home supply center if you hold it through a fall turn?

In this variant, I believe this is true.
-
Yep, the circles are supply centers, and you have to have a unit in at the supply center at the conclusion of the fall turn in order to capture it. If you already own it, it can be unoccupied and you'll still own it. The squares are build centers, which is where you can build a fleet or army to if you have more supply/build centers than you do units after Fall.

ty Sand...another quick question:
If I move a unit from a home supply center to another area, do I lose that center if nothing is left occupying it?
-
Ahhh, SOB

No, but if someone occupies it in the Fall, you lose it. Forces can travel through in the Spring without loss.

I tried it 5 or 6 times yesterday like sling and kept getting invalid password or game id emails back from the Judge.

In that case, I can either do it for you guys , or if you want to just switch back & forth between home & work emails, you can use the instructions that Sandman posted above.

That's a good question. All of the games I've been involved in, either as a
player, GM, or observer, wrote the country names out longhand (CSA as CSA).
So let's figure this out...
E - England
H - Holland
F - France
P - Prussia
A - Austria
R - Russia
T - Turkey
C - China
J - Japan
U - USA
S - CSA
X - Mexico
B - Brazil
Hmmm... I tried press to "E" but it failed. There's no England in the game. It's Britain, but there's also a Brazil, so I am assuming that Britain is "B" and Brazil is "Z" (R and A are already taken). Guess it's back to the web interface for some of the units. I'm going to do an email test to sort this out.
-
Can the broadcast messages be replied to via email?
Example: I get a private message from Japan. Can I just hit reply or do I need to use the interface ?

Yes, you can reply via email. Type in:
signon roclub_imp
press to j
blah blah blah
end press
signoff
That is, I'm assuming that Russia is "R" and Japan is "J".
-
I think I have it now...
B - Britain
H - Holland
F - France
P - Prussia
A - Austria
R - Russia
T - Turkey
C - China
J - Japan
U - USA
S - CSA
X - Mexico
Z - Brazil

Um banana it is normal for one to spend 2-3 hours a day looking at the map tring to decide what to do?
