Title: Where's the atmosphere?
Post by: fscott on October 12, 2000, 08:04:00 PM
Just getting around to asking this question, but where is the external sound effects? I would assume this would be a high priority, perhaps I have my settings wrong? No flak explosions, no bomb explosions, no plane explosion sound effects.

In Clipboard -Setup - Sounds - Crank up Explosions 1, 2, 3, 4. Not sure which is which, and it's more prevelant in HTH, but when a plane explodes or crashes you get a definate KABOOM.

Oh man. And I thought it was just the fact that perhaps HT was still working on teh ambient sounds. I have the sounds turned up but no secondary explosions....

Hmm... someone once posted a WW2 pilot's anecdotal account of the sounds he heard in the cockpit.  Can't remember if it was P-47 or P-38 or what, but he said all he heard was the deafening roar of his own engines and his own guns.  *Everything* else was drowned out.

I checked to see if all the wav files are there and they are.  When I ditch and then hit TOWER to go back to the start, I hear an explosion, as you are supposed to, so I know one at least works.

Tell me, when you guys hear ambient sounds apart from your own airplanes sounds, are they rare or do they happen everytime a plane crashes within your vicinity? I hear NOTHING, even when a B-17 drops it loads and I'm sitting on the runway.  The wav files work cause I've played them, just not in the game.

Only if I'm very close, and I think that's the way it should be. The one odd thing is hearing ricochets when strafing, but maybe that's just the ones hitting my plane  (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).

HT mentioned something about a bug, or got left out unintentionally, A1 has  the explosions etc. but all other fields are(were?) missing it.

HT, did you fix this?

Got dragged into 88mm flak the other day - heard explosions and shrapnel (sp?) hitting the plane.

I always here the 88's going off around me in flight.  I also hear any hits to my vehicle or AC.  I have heard rocket fire once in H2H.
Try turning up all the explosion sounds.  In RL the pilot wouldn't hear the external sounds over his own engine, with the possible exceptions of the VERY close flak explosions I'd bet.
Although a gunner in a buff maybe a different story..

If you are flying your plane at max throttle, you really can't hear much else, but when you are sitting in the open turret of the Ostwind, you should hear everything.

It really sucks to have your Ostwind blown away because you can't hear a huge radial engine with 4 20mm cannons blasting away at you.
