Tonite I was haveing a good ol time harrasing a few guys at A8 knowing I was just about bone dry on fuel. Being in a YAK I know once its under a 1/4 tank and you aint headed home your just not gonna make it home. I chose to stay over the base and have a good fite till the engine conked and then see if the poor guys I was harrassing would allow me to ditch (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Anyway.... to make a long story short, I ditched made a nice smoth landing and at the end of it hit the brakes a bit hard throwing my tail in the air a bit high. I let off the brakes and my tail came down hard and I bounced. My front gear then collapsed and I ended up looking out of the tower after dieing rather quickly on a good ditch. Wish I had turned on my video (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif) Anyway I just wanted let you guys know this was a suprise to me that the ground/ditch model has become so touchy. Is it just cuase I was in a YAK? Would a Jug or Hog do better? I was almost at a dead stop when it happened. Like I said it suprised the hell out of me. I know it wasnt any of teh bad guys as I ditched in a way they couldnt get a shot on me. Also one of my squaddies showed up right when I was ditching and gave them something to worry about (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

After a spectacular fight against Act last night, we both took engine hits and departed the fight to our own fields, my problem was i only had 1/2 my left wing, i glided in a wide path for base, but was to far so i decided to ditch. I ditched the Typhoon with gear up and 1/2 the left wing gone, i thought it odd so i grabed a few screen shots and started film for a few mins.
Neither of us got the kill, i sat ditched filming for a few mins & act rtb from alt and glided safely home.
Stale mate, but one hell of a good fight <S> act...........

Hey!
Yes, got the same Prob. Everytime i try to ditch i get killed. Dunno what im doing wrong. It seems a bit too touchy for me too.
BTW. What is more imprtant airspeed or verticla velocity? I always thought vv, but that doesnt work (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
WEll, any hint on "succesful ditching" is appreciated (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Vertical velocity is the main thing, but the higher your airspeed, the more time you have to snag a wheel/wing on some terrain feature, and create a spectacular cartwheel effect (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif). In general, though, it's best to keep your speed up and try to touch down as softly as possible, and if possible be on level ground. If you have to ditch in the mountains, always land uphill, or possibly perpendicular to the slope, never ever downhill.

On my last fight last night I was confronted by a P47 in a HO- and me in a C-Hawg (hey, I was hunted buffs reported to be in the area (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)). He died, but first removed half of a wing and one gear. I was going to ditch, then decided it was a bad option. I circled the base, and bailed right over the field. I landed, then exited. A split second later I thought "what if I had walked on to the runway?"...

Have found that you can't apply brakes when ditching. Just let her roll to a stop, works everytime (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)

Typhoon has always struck me as too easy to ditch considering the huge air scoop. This could just be because the old game Overlord taught me to ditch the Tiffy in the channel tail-first or die (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif) Strikes me that it shouldn't be an easy plane to ditch though, certainly not one of the easiest as it seems to be here.

Hmmm... since 1.03 ditching DID get much harder. But that was partly OUR fault! We were complaing about people ditching with catastrophic damage in seemingly ridiculous situations, like a buff with no wings. I once landed a B26 like that!
Most notable is the much greater dificulty of landing with half a wing gone. Unless you touch down just below safe landing speed, you tend to lose lift on the damaged wing and go into a slow roll, too low to bail (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/frown.gif).
Landing the P-38 with one engine, half a tail, and half a wing is interesting, though (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/eek.gif)!

"If I told you that there were a squadron of fighters waiting to pounce the moment you fired at me, would you believe me?"
"No."
"Er... how about just one then?"

But try a FW in the MED F16 map. The field is broken, and some planes (e.g., the FW, but not the 109) will break their gear on spawning. The FW breaks the gear and the pilot dies.
Kinda reminds me of WB actually.
I would like a little more leeway so you can actually perform those no gear, spin-out of control shedding parts landings and survive maybe one in ten times (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif).
