Comcast finally started charging ex-ATTBI customers for extra IPs. So both of my PC's lost their DHCP lease. (My landlord and I had been sharing a cable modem with a hub). We'll fix it on Monday when the landlord gets back by ordering two extra addresses.
But to fill the gap, I pulled out my trusty WET11 WiFi ethernet bridge and surveyed the neighborhood.
One of the neighbors was broadcasting SSID. 60% signal strength, not too bad. And WEP is DISABLED.
So I put the WET11 in DHCP mode and plug it into my hub. Sure enough the neighbor's router gives me an address for each PC plus the PlayStation2. :)
I point the browser to 192.168.1.1 and the handsomehunk hasn't even changed the router password from default.
Thank God for n00b5. I'm getting 1Mbps down / 128kbps up for free. :)
Anybody else doing this?

Funked, if you think that's the end of their security problems try going to the run line and typing \\ipaddress (where ipaddress is the IP address is the address of each of their PCs not including the PS2). (I.E. Type "\\192.168.1.101" minus the quotes.) If they are that oblivious to wifi security, I'll bet they have open shares or a blank Owner/Administrator password on their PCs. If you start moving files to and from their PCs they might get a clue...
Personally, I'd let them know that their computer network is totally insecure.

Heheh I'll start sending them messenger service spam: "ENABLE WEP YOU ****TARD!!!"

Oh yeah, my laptop has a wireless card in it.
I can get connections from at least 4 different households. Plus 1 I'm actually getting from the hospital.

Illegal?
-
Dunno... I don't use it.
I was just setting up my laptop one day and noticed I could get several connections from several different places.
-
hehe. the houses are so far apart here it is impossible to get your neibhors connection.

I have no idea. Seems unlikely though. The neighbor is broadcasting. I'm just tuning in.
EDIT: What my neighbor is doing may be illegal. He's paying for ISP service and then broadcasting it to the whole neighborhood.
EDIT EDIT: I think the part where I logged onto the router admin page was illegal. I'm going to try to contact him and tell him to not broadcast his SSID, use WEP, etc.

I read an article where someone was able to set up a wireless connection between their main (internet connection sharing computer) and a client computer without using a router, only 2 wifi cards, but thats obviusly a different sort of free wi-fi.

It's called an "Ad-HOC" connection and can be done with most wireless cards.
