Just wondering if there will be radar in the "Afrika Corps" Scenario. I hope not, unlike the Main Arena, Scenarios are organized and run by a closeknit group of fellas on each side, who usually have someone in the tower anyways, (at least thats how we did it in WB's). This guy calls vectors to the squadron C.O. on private channel and the C.O. makes his decision based upon that.
It adds to the fog of war as well as emphasizes teamwork among every member of the squadron. It also makes the squadron members look to the squadron C.O. for direction, rather than pressing their radar button, and taking a look-see themselves, and wondering, or saying aloud on channel "the bad guys are over there, why are we here?" type thing.
For example, the Med league practice Tuesday was a blast, but the only thing i didn't like was the availabilty of radar in-flight. Back when I flew warbirds with JG77, in the S3's and such, when we left our field we had to watch our CO, listen to his every message, keep doing 45 degree rolls each way, looking down the wings for the badguys, our eyes wide open, (yelling to the kids to shut up, when they weren't even making noise (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)). we had no idea where the enemy was, except for what our C.O. 'pritzl' was telling us. You looked to the C.O to lead the squad to its objective, not looked to him to pick which blob on your dar you were going after.
I'm rambling now.
Opinions?

The AWACS/J-STARS display has no place in a WW2 simulation. The MA is a game so I can sort of accept it there. But in scenarios, no way.
-
I agree, not only for realism, but because it would add to the over all tension.

Yep, disable the inflight radar completely!

Agree. Turn off inflight radar AND sector bars.
However, be prepared for the (very realistic) two hour "never saw the enemy" sortie. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

I don't want it too, also icons might be turned off too if u ask me, but 3k icons are acceptable
Anyway it's our first scenario and there will be much more, let's learn from this one first.

Hblair,
I know in the Afrika Corp scenerio it states in the Arena Settings the in flight DAR is disabled, however, the sector counters will be visible. I think this is probably the way to go. The counters could represent basic intel provided by a sector DAR operator to all AC defending an area. I'm not sure if the agressors should have it though. Thinking in an "axis" frame of mind, does anyone know for example, the allied capabilities of being able to detect scrambling fighters for buff interception form England. Did the allies have any intel that allowed them to communicate with offensive bomber actions what ac were coming up to intercept them?
I definitely agree though that the AWACs capablities should never be used for scenerio play.

I say turn off icons too. When you think about it this is the most, besides not actually dieing, unrealistic feature in the game . In real life you have to visually ID a target. They don't have 50 foot illuminated signs indicating plane type, nation and range on any of the planes in the wwII footage I have seen . Of course in the pork arena it is necessary with the mixed plane set .

I was refering to all radar, dot radar (dot dar) and sector bars (blob dar). If you want to simulate the real thing, let the fighter pilot get on the radio and get vectors from the guy in the tower.
I am surprised at times at how few people in this game even know how to give or take vectors when, say, our country radar is down in the main arena. You tell a guy "cons at 8,9,1", and they haven't a clue what I'm talking about, but then again, theres no reason for them to learn the lingo, is there. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)
Lets try a small poll here: Is there anyone in here who has flown in WB's scenarios (S3's, scenario lites, etc.) who would have rather had in-flight radar?
you know what I vote. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/smile.gif)
-
i thing you sould have a option to turn them of or on in the main area but in real scerios then it should be like it was in real life. (http://bbs.hitechcreations.com/smf/Smileys/default/wink.gif)

No In-Flight radar. No activity bars. Only Tower Radar restricted to real range.
Cheers,
Pepino.

Radar NO! Icons, yes. Minimal range onset though.
Suave did you partake in any of Udie's iconless setups in the Special Events Arena a few months back? No icons, in aH, gives a quantitative edge to those with fast CPU's, expensive video cards and big monitors with a small dpi. In other words, just a few folks. Don't get me wrong, these special nights were fun but the numbers dwindled because most did not like it due to the hardware limitations. Tthe state of the sim and computer technology isn't geared up for it yet by far.

I was under the impression that they were gonna turn all that stuff off in Zigrat's Med League. I thought it was just an oversight the last two times because of the disorganization caused by trying to get so many people on the same page. Anyway I hope they do turn it off.
-
OK, so I'm hardware challenged.
I'm using a Diamond Viper 550, (not the viper II), with a 15" Impressions Monitor.. in 1024 x 768 (maximum I can get)
If I had to rely on visually ID'ing an aircraft, I'd be dead every time. Please keep the icons, as it is I can't tell the differance between a fw190 and a p47 at 1500 yds.... I usually don't get that good a detail untill around 1000 yds or less
But I do agree that radar, (both exact and blob) need to be off.

I think Fishy (er, Fishu... Fishy Fishu) got blasted on another section of the board for 'boasting' that he could identify a lanc profile at 8k, but I think I can manage that with this ridiculous 19" monitor 1280 res setup I've got. Certainly I can identify any aircraft from 2k down to a certain degree of accuracy (Mistake silver P47 for P51, any japanese aircraft for.. any other japanese aircraft, yak for 109 etc), so it's definitely an unfair advantage for those with more advanced setups, and a bad choice for scenarios.
Wish there was another way than radar-tracking laser-ranged icons though.
-
I don't really have a prob with the d3.0 icons in scenarios. Its the dar that really hurts some of the fun in my opinion...

I'm not sure it was so easy to ID planes in real life. Anybody know why early USAAF aircraft in the ETO had white stripes, or why all Typhoons had black and white underwing stripes two years before D-Day?
-
I understand that during WW2 aircraft identification was extremely difficult and often misidentifications were made. Could we somehow have a compromise and turn on icons at a distance that is historically accurate. I don't know what that distance might be, but if a WW2 pilot could positive ID a contact at say 1500 yds, our icons should also activate at that distance.
I am not sure it is presently possible, however it would be even more interesting to have to be closer to aircraft that were more difficult to ID than others, like telling the difference between 190's and early 47's, before an icon popped up. Or have bomber's icons pop up sooner, since they would be more visible and easier to identify.

being a ju88 pilot in the med league there's np doudt that having all dar off will aid in our remaining undetected however we may fly head long into the enemy making strategic and tactical considerations a little more interesting. plus we don't have the defensive fire that 17 and 26 have so its that much more important to us that we remain undetected.
-
Radar was around back then but only gave location not altitude and they could compute the speed. I would like to have HQ send out message of nme in sector such and such. Or give us the radar equiped planes that did see combat.

Just like real life . Why should you be able to identify plane type and country markings from over a kilometer away with the naked eye . We're all used to flying with bionic eyes I guess . I've been practicing with icons off alot lately and any fighter beyond 1k is just an undiscernable dot to me. At 1k my computer chirps and the dot becomes a shape . I too am hardware challanged, I get 16 fps in the tower. Yet I find fighting icons off refreshing as Irish Spring after dirty sex .

I didn't realize that the radar situation was explained on the events website. I just read that the sector bars would be employed. I sure hope they change their minds on that.
