Title: so what'$ the damage?
Post by: bockko on July 25, 2004, 11:56:49 PM
I am just curious to see what the latest rev of AH has damaged our collective pocket books...but our loss helps the economy, right??

I am out approx $200 for a new video card...anyone else shelling out?

I dumped about that much on a new vid card...though that was because the old one smoked right after I started playing.

my 3 yr + old gammer plays ah2 just fine . I did just replace its gf2 card though with a $90 ATI just to improve the eye candy though . not a bad investment for a machine that is that old.

Conservatively $950.00 including new MB, ATI 9800 vid card, USB CH PRo pedals and a new headset.

You can add a previous incumbancy of $650/00 AUS for the Cougar Hotas just to play AH.

and the coming chip all required for my personal enjoyment of AH of $500.00.

All up for AH alone as the primary joy of my internet gaming (not including monthly play fees, slate me for $2100.00.

Why?

Why the hell not :)

AH doesn't drive my upgrade schedule, I was ready for AH2 a year ago.

So, $0 for AH2 upgrade

Hundreds of $ for upgrades in the past years just to stay out of the stone age computer wise.

I spent $800 on my comp and $80 on the joystick. Lol it's funny when you think about it. We need an AH school for addiction.

I spent $200 on a new video card back in March. But it wasn't to play AH2 on, I did it because I usually do that every other year anyhow and it was just "time". In September I'm doing the MB/proc upgrade 'cause my current one is almost 3-years old.

I didn't spend anything to get AHII to run on my AMD XP1800.
I just DLed the Omega Drivers for my laptop, and now it runs there too.

I might add some RAM (256 megs is getting a bit old lol), but that has more to do with photo-editing than AHII.

Let's see...I sent back my dead bfg asylumn TI-4200 and they sent me a new FX 5900xt.  So 0.00 for a new video card.(and yes, it was truly dead, and they do offer a "lifetime replacement")
Found a Nforce2 motherboard on ebay for 35.00 shipped.
New Crucial 2700 cl2.5 DDR memory was my most costly item, two 256mb sticks on ebay ran 60.00 shipped.
I'm out $95.00, but it was time to upgrade.  A new cpu will be next, but it can wait for awhile.  My Athlon 1800+ throughbred is rock stable at a fsb of 170 with a loaded temperture of 46 c and a multiplier of 12.5.  A new 3200+ is next, but i'm not in a hurry.

Both cards are excellent cards. Where the AIT falters the 6800 picks up the slack and vice versa.

Also I might add this one important note. The comparison between the two cards wasn't even an equal one. Simply put, you can't compare apples to oranges. What in the hell am I talking about?

Here.

Quote
As we mentioned on page two we are also missing the new version of NV40: GeForce 6800 Ultra. In a day or two we will update with results for that card too.

Also, look at the test done between the two cards. For each program they ran three tests for the X800. With each test they would overclock the X800 and bump up the res. While with the 6800 they ran a single test at the cards base line and left it at that. Now thats a great comparison.

They took a lesser card and tried to compare it to the best of the best that ATI has to offer. You can't do a sufficient comparison if you are dealing with the best of the best and dont have all the propor hardware not to mention the data that will follow.(Of which they had next to none when it came to the 6800)

Just curious, have you looked at a true tech comparison between the two cards? I mean one that is up to date (Non Bias) with both cards?

(btw did you happen to notice that ATI's badge was all over each and every page? That must tell you something right? I'd hope so anyways)

I think you may be a bit surprised.

Whoops, missed that.

There is an article in Computer shopper magazine, I dont recall which issue, that compares the Geforce 6800 ultra with the Radeon X800XT.  They came out to be about equal, but there were other things such as x800 takes 1 agp/pci slot while 6800 takes 2, and the 6800 takes more power to run that put the 800 over the top.

I just found that chart and posted it up without reading the article.  My mistake.:D
Title: so what'$ the damage?
Post by: Morpheus on July 29, 2004, 11:08:24 PM
hehe

well if those little slots on the back of your case are valuble space then the fact that the 6800 takes up two as apposed to the X800 which only needs one that may be a viable concern.

Just so ya know. Both cards use one "agp/pci" slot but the Geforce card takes up two spaces on the back of the case as far as PCI "card holders" if you will,  go. On the case itself, not on the Mobo.

There are some down sides to the 6800 Ultra as far as power goes. What are they? Well, its' demands. Minimum req for the 6800 is 450w. Thats minimum. Recomended is far beyond that. And yes, it does take up two power leads. So if power is a concern the 6800 may pose a few problems for you. Neither of the two cards are for a person looking for great performance at a low price; the 6800 even more so. At close to 600 dollars its nothing short of being over the top in price. The most expensive isn't always the best, but in this case, in my position, it is.

The amount of $$$ spent on hardware by AH community = Lots

The amount of time to fix this driver or that bios or this error = Lots & lots

People still thinking a DirectX 6 game looks good = priceless
Title: so what'$ the damage?
Post by: United on July 30, 2004, 08:59:03 AM
While the number of slots are no problem to me (at least for now) what really turned me off to the 6800 was the power requirements.  It just baffles me that the X800, nearly the same in performance, requires much less power.  Maybe its just me but 450W is quite a bit of power.

I guess Im just wierd like that.:)
