My gf's sister is going to New York in september and she asked me about tipping. If i remember correctly the usual is about 15-20% in resturants and about a buck per bag to bellhops. A couple of $ to the maids a day to isnt it?
danke.

pretty much standerd for any service in US ..... just round up from 15% to the nearest dollar....
and ya,maids should always be tip'd if your going to stay in a place awhile.

Be advised that some of the Mid town manh. establishments add the tip on the bill, and never ask for Mayo with your pastrami!!
If you drop food on the side walk run for your life, the pidgeons
will crap all over you...

I flew in and went to a Deli across from Penn station, was starving so I ordered a pastrami on Rye with mayo, the guy behind the counter asked me if I was sick for ordering mayo with pastrami, he wanted to say "getoutahere"... so I walked over to
Mad square garden to eat on the steps and the door man told me hey "get theshreckoutaherewiththat" and as I left I dropped part of my mayo and pastrami sandwhich and it turned into a scene from the birds... pidgeons from all over Manhatten converged onto the gardens front step after a 1/8 ounce piece of pastrami and several strands of lettuce.... A sidewalk preacher singing the end of the world started screaming its a sign of the end thats coming... "This guy was good!!"
I was mental from that image... took me a week to get those images out of my head.....

Should of gone to the other side and eaten your pastrami with mayo( ) on the steps of the post office.
-
mayo should ONLY be used on a turky samwidg, well maybe chicken also.
ok ok BLT's, but THATS IT.
-
throw some Alkaselzers to those flying rats
-
Idiots, you should have told him that everybody tips 300% of the bill. Or that they express their gratitude not with tips, but with open mouth kisses.
-
Glad I didn't meet ya in the city MAYO, I would of smacked ya one.
Hear the book is coming out;
Ikon's first trip to the Big City
a story about a boy and his mayo.
BTW you must tell me about the doorman at the Garden, never saw a doorman all the times I've gone there.
Oh and tip what ya feel is right, go by service.
The waiters in Manhatten think a tip is there god given right no matter how bad the service you recieve. And there are no waiters in NYC they all actors and writers.(they will tell you)
-
Good grief... 15%
Thats was than the IRD.
Come to NZ, don't tip, its an insult ;)
-
Just tried typing in http://www.nyc.com and a site popped up.
said this about tipping...
"Tipping and Gratuities
Please take note, tips are not automatically added to restaurant and hotel bills. In restaurants, a tip to the wait person of 15% to 20% of the total check is customary. In New York City, you can easily leave the appropriate tip amount by doubling the 8.625% sales tax.
Some ther tipping guidelines:
15% to 20% of the fare to taxi drivers 10% to 15% of the tab to bartenders $1 to $2 per bag to bellhops $1 to $5 per day to hotel maids $1 to $2 per item to checkroom attendants $1 to $2 to valet parking attendants 15% to 20% to hairdressers
Finally, you are not expected to tip theater ushers, gas station attendants, or fast-food restaurant employees."

Looked like a doorman dressed like a doorman thus I call him a doorman!!
I had one real night to see NY before I taught class the next day,
in class were 15 of the largest resellers in the US, showing up drunk at 6:30 AM was not an option..business is business...
meeting up with you would have no doubt been a Hoot but I couldn't take that chance of showing up late to teach drunk and stinking of booze... just to important of a trip to risk screwing up... Was my first trip to NY, it was as much a freak show as it was a city... BTW why didn't you tell me The Penn was such a ****hole, or is that normal Midtown accomodations, we have best westerns in florida that the penn makes look like a Marriott..
