Title: Is this game worth it?
Post by: Dinky2003 on July 27, 2004, 12:19:47 AM
Dunno if this is the right place to put it, but anyway, here goes.

I read about this game online in the WorldWar2Online forums, they said it was pretty good, and it would be nice to fly/drive/etc without having to dig around for vehicles at the airfields like in WW2OL.

Anyways, I was wondering if this game was worth subscribing to.

Are there a decent amount of people playing this game in US Primetime?

Is there some kind of limited-supply system that will require me to dig around for vehicles like in WW2OL?

Will I be able to find a squad/clan/whatever when I first get into the game, and have people that will teach me the ropes? Or will I be left in the dust like in WW2OL?

Finally, is the gameplay deep enough to keep me subscribed for a long period of time?

Now on my background, I have been playing various computer games for roughly 6-7 years, and I'm pretty decent at flying and gunning for both WW2 era tanks-AAA, and WW2 era planes, I also know quite a bit about the real life backgrounds for the equipment (I'm a history and gun nut, and I do a bit of re-enacting on the side.)

Anyway, I would appreciate any responses to this thread, and thanks in advance for your help.

[ADDED:Also, what's the balance like in this game, Historical or Red vs. Blue, and does this game have any side imbalance, or are there measures to keep that from happening?]

best advice would be try it for the 2 week free trial period, visit the Training arena ( TA ) and ask for help on things you do not know about or understand yet. as in all games people cry about balance of sides/countrys. For most part all countrys/sides are near the same. Some squads recruit all the time, some don't have to find a group that you gel with and get along with. This may take a few trys, so is best to learn the game and fly with different groups till you are invited to join or feel like joining. don't rush into it.

These boards, especially this forum is where you would probably find the answer to most of your questions concerning game functions. best of luck and hope you like it:)

Would you recommend using the offline mode to learn the basics before actually going online?

It might not be a bad idea to fly offline just to get a feel of the flight model before going into the MA.

Well I've been here since early beta, ,and I still learn something new most every day.

The learning curve is steep, the flight model may be a bit tougher than anything else out there.

Side inbalance is more a matter of what time of day you fly than anything else. As each of the country's have times when they are most likely to outnumber the other 2.

AH also has free 8 player H2H, which is a good place to get a taste of how the planes fly if not the gameplay.

Start with the spit 5, relearn the basics, give me a yell at billj69@btinet.net  when your ready to hit the training arena.

What have you got to lose?

U.S. prime time you will find 400-500 (some times more) flying.

AH has well over 3000 subscribers.  it is RARE to find less than 70-100 people up, and that is in the weee hours of the morn. (u.s.)

STEEP learning curve in AH.  Even with your background, expect to devote many months to get "decent".

AH has a three country system named after chess pieces.  Knight, Rook, and Bishop.  Side balancing is reasonably even, and it fluctuates who has the most people.

Plenty of squads in AH, and I would find one you like, and make sure they will train.

AH also has several arena's: the Main arena, Training arena, Dueling arena, Combat Theatre, and Special Events arena.

You get 2 weeks to try it, so give it a shot, and welcome to your new addiction.

Basicall was going to say what they did and I've been playing AH for 3 years or so. In my limited income opinion.. a definate YES to it's worth it.
I also think offline flying , while boring, can be of great value to your familiarization of the game. It will definately help you with flying, learning some game commands, and many things. You can also get your cockpit views adusted and pracice keeping track of things, field installations or the drone planes, to MASTER the views. I think that is also a critical thing to do.
With the release of AH2 we have a new flight model, damage model.. heck almost a new game so many people are 're-learning' it so to speak.
Visit http://www.netaces.org for some info on setup, basic and advanced info even though you may not need it. A quick read of the help file can also be a good thing.

for the most part the help file will be of great use, at the Launching of AH2 the clipboard section has not been updated, there are a few minor changes and you will just have to walk your way thru this part, is really self explanatory, just more options mainly.

If ya have any questions regarding just ask away, I am sure someone will respond with an answer as soon as possible.

hope you enjoy AH2

DEFINATELY veiw all the help pages.

DEFINATELY read about mapping all the joystick stuff.

DEFINATELY print out the key commands

DEFINATELY fly offline, and practice basic flight for a few hours minium.

DEFINATELY practice gunnery offline on the drones.

once online, go to the training arena and get the following basics down pat:

radio tuning and communication.
clipboard functions
map usage, and explnation of icons / related
flight help (auto polits, how to set, and slavo of ordinance)
view's setup (saving head positions)

those basics can be learned in a few hours, but go a HUGE way to learning the whole game. i had a basic cirruculim layed out, that covered everything someone new to AH needs to know to fly and enjoy the game. i will try and post a link to it.

until then, make a list of the mentioned things above, and as you learn them fully check them off. dont pass over one, and if the trainer you find cant teach you all about a subject find another (though every trainer should know these basics blindfolded).

<> good luck and have fun

The Main Arena, which is by far the most populated, is a green-red fight, although there are three sides to choose from.

Consider stopping by the Combat Theater.  Historical sides, each week is basically a different slice of time during the war, and having fewer people there may make your debut easier and more pleasant.  Ask for help as soon as you get.

Two things...

1st.

Stop by http://www.netaces.org

Best information resource out there, Soda's plane evaluations are amazing, and still mostly relevant even though they were written for AHI.

2nd.

If you're interested in flying in historic matchups and can fly on Friday nights, drop me a line. There's a Squad Based Event called "Squadron Operations." You're welcome to fly with Shillelagh if you're interested.

Dinky2003, come on in the waters fine, if not occasionally "Hot"!

I've been at it since The old AWI days.  AH has better country copperation and more planes, vehicles and ships(no subs [hint]).

It is a game that must be learned and each ride must be learned.

If you want to hookup with a Sunday night squad, drop me a line.

Yeah... I miss those practice offline missions from AW. I loved flying that A-12(?) mission against the German column before they made it through the "gap".

:aok  This game better than any other online sim around.
Best graphics and help is no problem when you ask, problem may be too much help.
Everybody has their on way but practice, practice, practice is the only thing that will help you become better.

This game is fun but it can be frustrating.

Spend the time to get your equipment setup. You may find you need to setup up your views and not just the standard look right and left, etc. You also need to setup your stick to suit your style of flying.

You may think of this game as a very fast moving chess match. You enter the fight with a few moves already set in your mind. A split second later all of that goes out the window and you've taken the attack in a new direction.  Or, you're on the defensive.

Spend some time in the training arena. Have a trainer assess your skills and perhaps provide some pointers.

Then, join a squad. There are many who are always in the recruiting mode. But, be picky. Join one who exhibit the same interests you feel you want out of the game. They are out there.
There are squads that have been in existence since '87. Long lasting friendships are made within the community.

It's all there.  Just show up and start having some fun.

Good God man you're asking a group of people sitting in their underwear, drinking beer, ignoring wives and children, upgrading their computers continuously, purchasing large qtys of reading material from Amazon late at night so that they can fly imaginary cartoon planes in an imaginary war!!

It's not like you're going to get a sensible answer or anything.
