Title: Upcoming changes to the Combat Theatre
Post by: Mister Fork on July 27, 2004, 12:35:24 PM
Hey everyone,

Thought I'd let you all know that changes are coming to the Combat Theatre.

a) Top Ace Contest
We are mulling over a TOP ACE contest for the  Combat Theatre. Still need to work out deails and talk to the owners but it's coming.  It'll probably be based on kills with a weight based on your kill/death ratio.  I.e. 100 kills, K/D is 2.0, score is 200. 100 kills, K/D is 4.5 score is 450.

b) Guidelines and Regulations for CT Staff positions
No longer will the CT staff self appoint positions to run the CT.  We are working on the details, perhaps even elections for all spots.  Guidelines and regulations for staff are going to be put into place on how we, as CT admins, govern the arena. This includes mandatory flying hours requirments (you gotta fly in the Ct to be an admin), and regulations on how elections are handled, and how to manage the community.  More to follow.

So that's all I'm going to say for now.  I'm hoping that combined with these upcoming changes and events the CT will be a community driven arena.

But Top Ace thing, might make some more people not fight...

b. sounds like a good move.

Not so sure about a. ...  hopefully it would only appeal to the score potatos and have no impact pro or con on me.

Or it could make more fight. Or it could have no effect at all. I'd say a decent furballer would have best shot if there's decent furballs.

Who is going to figure this out?
Why do you want to do this?  I thought that you wanted to do away with scores/ranks.
What are the advantages of this rank system over the HTC score/rank system?

If you do decide to run the contest, run a poll of CT regulars and ask them to vote on it.  If they decide that they want it, then you have a buy in.  Without a vote it will be pooh-poohed even worse than the current HTC score/rank system.

I would guess that there would be a major shortage of folks who would even want the job.  Many folks may have trouble making any kind of a commitment.  I for example would be interested but am already spread too thin to take on any commitment with a time table of required duty times.  Sometimes I can’t even spare the time to fly for a week or more.  Other weeks/month I have time that I could spare.  My guess is that many folks are in the same boat.  Take a poll to see how many folks would even be interested in the first place.

The idea of any contest/prize is to entice OTHER/NEW players into the Combat Theatre, not existing players.  No vote will be forth coming to the members, besides, I expect a CT member to win it.

Personally I don't think this Ace thing will be that big of a success but then again i have seen stranger things happen.

One of the reasons that the numbers are so low right now is the bugs. (personal opinion)

How about this a sort of popup message in the MA, TA, & DA. It could say something like this "System Come enjoy historical setups in the Combat Theatre" If this is fessible it could popup say every ten minutes or something like that. This maybe a stupid idea but some of the people who play the game don't even come the bbs and so they don't even see Arlo's banners.

I know from playing in the MA once in awhile that there are people in there who have never even heard of the CT.

Who is on the CT staff currently? Are you talking about electing each other for different CT staff positions? Or how you select new CT staff members?

I'm sure TheBug will have some fascinating commentary to add here.
Unfortunately he is away this week serving as a diplomatic liason to France for her majesty the Queen. I expect he will return Friday full of "piss and vinegar". ;)

He may have some commentaries to be sure but they will fascinate no one.  It will be war with france then, good news.  I will enlist in the RCAF in anticipation.

Top Ace contest is wonderful idea IF you add a bull's-eye to the icon of the leader.

Would be fun to see the bull's-eye swarmed and see how many times the lead changes even in one or two sorties.

In other words, Top Ace contest seems unnecessary complication and distraction in Aces High's "purest" arena.

I don’t think that it will work at all in generating interest without any kind of a prize.  The current HTC ranking system does not seem to motivate or draw people into the CT.  As someone who generally ranks high, I can verify that any kind of a title is nearly meaningless.  Very few folks seem to care about rank in the CT.  Lots of MA types must know that they could fly in the CT and rank very well with little effort, but they don’t.

If HTC will give a free month or two subscription for the winner of the contest, you might get some interest and new players.  The cash prizes in the MA have clearly drawn interest.  Could something similar in the CT boost it?  Probably at least a little.

I agree with DJ111 that such a contest will scare some folks away from fights.  The current score system also incorporates K/T, K/S and hit %.  Kills per Time is critical to good score/rank/contest.  It motivates people to fight, not run.  It is very critical.
Kills per sortie isn’t as important as the others but detracts from upping to intercept one lone con.
Hit percent sort of measures a skill and helps prevent spray-n-pray.

Eskie, if I read you correct, the K/D is not a good measure, but perhaps the hit percentage and kills? Or a kills/time ratio?

Yep, I'm working on giving a month or two free away - just gotta check with Dale/Doug - seeing how busy they are I'm just waiting for the right time to ask. :)

Fighter point eh?  Hmmm... to be honest, that might work quite well.  It's a combination of hit %, kills, K/D, etc.  I've asked and am just waiting to see what Dale/Doug say.

Sorry im very picky. but about the campaigns.

The battle of Coral Sea was before Midway...

and its spelled Solomon islands.
you had me going through my WWII history books to find something about the battle of Salmon island. Im a pretty big PTO buff, so you had me worried!

But im adverse to the top ace thing. part of me just dont like it. its probably because i know i could never win it. :lol

Fighter rank is a good measure.

The three most important are: K/D, K/T and points.
K/D is obvious why it is a good measure.
K/T encourages fighting when not always at an advantage.
Points keeps someone who flew one great fighter sortie from parking their score and not flying in fighter mode again.
Points are earned by damaging enemy aircraft.  K/D kills and hit % are not part of points.

These three are critical to balance each other.  The other two add more aspects but are not quite as important, IMHO.  Much easier to go with fighter rank though.
