I played CS back when it was beta (before it was ruined by the influx of kids).  This is like in fall of 1999.  The clan I was in was buddy with gooseman and we'd get new versions early to help play test before formal release.  One time he replaced the knife with a rubber dildo that made a rubbery THWACK sound when you hit someone with it.  Heh that didn't last too long :)   Good fun.

God, people would get so mad on a 16 man server when 4 of us clan guys would go against 12 opponents and consistently win.  "The Hate" was truly alive during the CS beta.  This was back when you didn't have the lower ammo restrictions you have now so 4 people had the ammo to do it.

Then Beta 4 came out and introduced that stupid "dust" map and it has gone downhill ever since.  By beta 6 hackers were starting to become commonplace and that's about when I stopped playing.

Used to be both teams had access to the same weapons and the M4 had a scope so 90% of the players were running around with M4's whenever they had the money.  And gunrunning was about the most hated activity which they later patched out of the game.

Most fun I ever had in an FPS.

I host 2 LAN parties each year, and thats usually the game of choice. Its so much fun on a LAN, but online... bah.
