Title: Marriage and War
Post by: Wolfala on July 30, 2004, 05:57:06 AM
OK, here's a quesiton for ya.

For those who have gotten married right before being deployed - what % of the marriages have lasted when they returned home? Doesn't matter if it's to Iraq or Kosovo.

Depends.

After 6 month cruises in the Navy we usually had few divorces in the squadron. Hard to tell %s - i'd guess 20%.

Supposidely cruises in the naby used to last 12 months and more in the past but divorce rates reached 80% and they changed the policy.

Can't say about war but I've seen several marriages (not mine) end during year long separations not uncommon in the military. These weren't "new" marriages though.

My buddy served on Boomers out of Connecticut. The boats have a blue crew and a gold crew. Same boat 2 different captains etc. so they can be deployed year round.

After a few cruises he discovered that his wife had a blue and gold crew too.

One of my favorites.

We had a crew member fly home from Singapore for a family emergency (his wife's father died).  About 2 weeks after he got back to the boat, he recieved a letter from his wife.  It contained a doctor's report indicating the STD he had given her (a gift from the PI) and divorce papers.

I made three cruises to the Indian Ocean. The shortest trip was 5.5 months. The longest one was 7.5 months. I also had a few 2-3 month RIMPACs peppered in there. After my first child was born, I left two weeks later and was gone for six months.

I've been married for 21 years (to the same woman).
