Title: How to make the Mustang even faster
Post by: Widewing on August 01, 2004, 11:13:14 AM
Last evening, I discovered something about the P-51D that I hadn't seen before.

Fighting in a furball over an enemy field, ack took off my right wingtip. It was obviously time to egress, so I turn east and head for home. But, I spot an La-7 high above, about 4k behind me. Down he comes. I hit WEP and stay glued to the deck. With half of my wing missing, odds are that I will not be able to kill the Lavochkin. The La-7 closed to within 1.0k and the distance stabilized there. I checked my airspeed.... 410 mph, level on the deck. The range began to open, 2k, then 3k. Finally, I ran out of WEP. However, I was pleased to see my speed only dropped about 7 mph. As I raced for our field at over 400 mph, the La-7 quickly fell behind as the range eventually increased to 5.5k over the 15 mile run. Meanwhile, I called ahead and about 6 Rooks were waiting for the hapless La-7, obliterating him in seconds. I landed without further adventure.

So, should you absolutely, positively need to get gone in your P-51, first rip off a wingtip. ;)

My regards,

Widewing

I used to use that in the Ta-152 in AH1. If I was in deep doodoo with faster fighters I'd sometimes pull hard G's and pop both wingtips off. Nothing could catch me then.

Losing wingtips = losing ailerons, right? So how would you ever circle/land once you had escaped?

Rudder works great. Don't need ailerons.

idem me262, no wingtips is free speed...
La7 hyperspacing away with no wingtips after screwing up some sorry coward tactics is a memorable sight.

I can tell you that in AH2 its much easier to land a wing damaged F4U....with full flaps, its  a little squirley at low speeds....but doesnt flop over to one side automatically

The Soviets did the exact same thing with an La-7....

I can only speculate at who the idiot was that agreed to fly it. Must have been young (and stupid). :)
