Does anyone have any references or white papers on this topic that would be good for a layman such as myself to get upto speed on?

look at :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OSI_seven-layer_model
or
http://www.webopedia.com/quick_ref/OSI_Layers.asp

Don't forget that there is no a lot of networks OSI compliant (IP is missing 2 for example).

here's and easy way to remembr the 7 OSI layers

People____Physical
Don't_____Data link
Need_____Network
To_______Transport
See______Session
Palua____Presentaion

Understand tho ... there are only 5 layers in TCP/IP.  This is a model to help you understand networking.
