Title: Waffle's Soundpack 1.8
Post by: Waffle on August 03, 2004, 03:06:01 PM
Ok guys - new pack is out. Starting with the next version (1.9) I will be using WINRAR to pack the files. This will allow for
a smaller download size. you can get this filecompression utility at: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm.

Now here's 1.8 (zip) Waffles AH2 soundpack 1.8 (http://www.dangreve.com/sounds1.8.zip)

Keep an eye out for mirror sites if D/L slow. I know Lucell will be hosting a mirror through AH-skins.com.  And I believe Viperman will also host a mirror. If anyone else can host mirror, would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Waffle

lol - someone take away the sugar coated cherios....

The ju87 wind file was done last patch. Other planes treated with the blending of 2 sounds together were the F4us and 190s. Since I added new 190 engines / I added the high alt "whine" into the wind file.  So now when you're going fast enough, the 190s whine, and the f4u whistle....

Please don't do that. It converts all winzip files in your toybox to winrar files.

Your not saving much in the conversion. Everyone and there mother is familier with winzip.

Winzip is universal, it works. It's a standard.

I went through an afternoon dumping that program and it's changes to my files a few years back.

I won't be wanting to do it again.

Thanks

It's very easy during the install of WinRAR to tell it which types of files you wish to open with which program. Just tell WinRAR to only open RAR files and it won't touch you ZIP files. Not that it did anything to them, just associated itself.

Anyway if Waffle makes it a RAR file and people can't use it, I'll repack  it as a ZIP and mirror both files.

And if he really wants to compress files he can make them ACE files.  ;)

This is simply wrong. With winrar 3.1 I can choose if I want to use ZIP or RAR for the archive.  Also this version definetly doesn't run any batch script which converts all archives into RAR files.

This highly depends on the file types, but RAR is definetly more advanced.

Winrar has the same look and features, plus it can handle almost all archives correct and not like winzip.

You will be surprised how things in the computer world changed in the last years. :D

Honestly, I dumped Winzip 3 years ago and use Winrar (for ZIP and RAR archives) without any problems since then.

I like most of it, but most of the engine start up sounds sound the same. I did not use all of your sounds, but kept alot of mitsu's only because I dont want an a20, la7 and a6m to sound the same sitting on the runway;) Besides that Its pretty good. My new check 6 sound is homer :aok

Actually, this file when  compressed using winrar comes out to be 64mb download.

I  believe the pre-compression folder was around 112mb.
winrar doing it in .zip format put it 93mb.

As for next patch....like I said in above post, will be dealing more with specific plane sounds / engine types, ect....as well as correlating operational sound (flaps/gear, ect...) levels within the individual plane.

One thing I'm looking for are good quality samples of the russian plane sets engines. Even if anyone has a crappy version of a fly-by it would help.

not a software engineer...hell i can pack a groceries or a truck...but not software...lol

Will look in to it...

also I change levels and re'eq things that I don't have the patience to write down everything I changed - just major ones.

And like I said before, I'm just uploaded what I'm using in my sounds folder edited to my taste. Not developing software.

I tried mixing some sounds from your soundpack with ones from mitsu's, but your sounds are so quiet. I changed the stall buzzer, but could barely hear it over my engine. I turned the stall horn sound up to 100% and could still barely hear it. I guess the only way to really enjoy all of your sounds is use your whole pack.

I agree, long download for things ya already have :) I would rather manually place them in there

Well, from an audio quality standpoint, the reason that they are so quite is that I want to leave the whole waveform intact. Everyone always ends up "boosting" the sounds digitally and it causes a "clipping" of sorts. Granted, I could turn everything up, but it would end up sounding like "arse".

literally. loud distorted sounds, no clarity.

Granted, I know the majority of you don't care about the "science" that goes into audio processing, but I do it for a living, and decided to mix up a little sounds pack for my enjoyment. I figured most would enjoy it also.

But here's a visual to help:

heres a wave of "clipped sound" engine.
Now, if you want to reduce the volume of this file, this is what you would have. (-5db reduction of volume)
Here is the way a wave form should look, when there is no clipping. This is the ENG wav from the 190d9 in 1.8 soundpack.

Anyway, I'm trying to keep most of the sounds where there is no compression / clipping, just because of volumes sake.
Plus all and all it will sound better. Most gaming companies / record companies, tv stations don't realize this.
They all want to have the loudest song on the jukebox, and unfortunelaty, that leaves most recordings these days lifeles and compressed. As well are other mediums. No breathing room.

one current example I can think of off the top of my head in recording issues is the difference between say someone like Avril Lavine? (will call her "squirt" for this instance) and then Nora Jones. (not comparing musical styles here, but quality of recording)

Anyway, if you listen to one of "squirts" songs..you notice there are no dynamic changes..Everything is at one level...you can't really discerne stuff, unlees you have a wide stereo feild set up.

But with Nora song, you can hear the everything...even the room that they recorded in. Very minimul compression...a great sounding album.

Anyway, I'm just going by what I hear in my little headphones :)

I see where your comin from. but I like things loud:) how bout you make homer screaming "AH BOOGEYMAN" louder and e-mail it to me so I can use that as my check6 call:aok

I like the volume as is it is now. Before, I always reduced volumes of many things, because they were too loud and covered other sounds. :)

hehe - i think this sound pack is gonna be aimed towards the older, quiter, discening listener.... :)

Starting on 2.0..skipping 1.9 and going for 2..lol. Gotta figure out how to pack in a smaller download and possibly go with the self extracting / installing set-up.

who knows...

Engine sounds  / start-ups / shutdowns as well as flap / gear operations are dominent changes this go round. Trying to make every thing blend in better for each plane.

Haven't heard the word "clipping" since at least 10 years ago when my friends used to mess around with installing car stereo equipment.  They'd run test tones off of a cd through the deck / amp and to a test speaker (I think) as a rough way of adjusting the gains to minimize clipping.   Since I didn't get into it as deep as they did, I only remember that clipping = bad and can = damaged speakers.
