(in part)

ST. LOUIS, Aug. 5 -- Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) (R-Ariz.) rushed to John F. Kerry's defense Thursday, condemning a new ad claiming the Democratic presidential nominee lied about his military record and betrayed his Vietnam comrades by protesting the war.

McCain, who was a prisoner of war in Vietnam, called on President Bush (news - web sites) to condemn the ad, which was financed in part by a major Republican Party donor in Texas.

Notice in the article that the Bush campaign has called for BOTH sides to call on 527 groups to stop running ads, but the Kerry campaign has declined to do so. Probably since the 527 groups on Kerry's side are producing ads that attack Bush, and appear to be better funded, not to mention that they are producing ads at a greater rate, and that are far more viscious in their nature.

Gee, aren't we all surprised.

With regards to McCain, I respect his service, but I do not respect his politics. And I'm not impressed with the fact that he's a media darling that they fawn over on a near daily basis, either.

McCain has been a major disappointment to me for several years.  I would just prefer it if he changed parties.

I would like some news person to ask this of McCain:

"Senator, your condemnation of the Swiftboat Veterans for Truth add impuning Kerry's service in Vietnam was strong and immediate.  However, shouldn't you also have commented on the need to ascertain if there was any truth to their allegations?"

I think McCain's response would be something along the lines of "He showed up and did his duty. If these men felt so strongly they should have filed reports at the time. They have no proof to back up the allegations and they are politically motivated."

Kerry killed VC in country with his bare hands. Bush killed VO in Alabama with his bare lips.

Ahhh I see.  So the guy that took over kerry's boat after his 4 months of service were over wouldnt have a good observation of kerry's leadership abilities by the condition of his boat and crew?

Nor do any other officers that served with Kerry in other boats have an opinion on what Kerry's leadership abilities entail?

McCain says so so that's enough for you librals.....we can't bash Kerry for incopitence while in command because he at least showed up?

dumb defense if you ask me.

AND since Kerry is running on his war record and not his senate record I think it deserves scrutiny.

McCain knows Kerry much better than you and I ever will. McCain is an honorable man and I believe him. The crew of Kerry's boat don't seem to have a problem with him and I believe them. Some group put together by a political ad agency I never heard of smears his service and I'm suppossed to buy it?

I don't think so.

Oh BTW, they are already starting to publicly recant their accusations.

rpm, you should wait a few minutes before posting this everywhere as if it was confirmed.  The officer in question, Captain Elliot has since gone on record as saying that the news column you refer to misquoted and distorted what he said, and that he stands by the affidavit he signed.
