Just bought a 9800 Pro, having problems with it when using CAT 4.7s. I can't get 8x to work right. It boots up fine, but after a few minutes in Windows - text goes to crap and then the system locks up. In a game that offers both OpenGL and D3D, I get artifacts on the screen. In OpenGL it takes about 5 seconds, then it looks up in flight. In D3D - it goes longer. When I bump the AGP speed down to 4x, no problems what-so-ever.
Anyone heard of this problem? Mobo is MSI AV something, PS is 400W. Built the system from scratch yesterday, the only problem is with 8x AGP - thinking drivers may be screwed, but don't know. Also, don't know what drivers are the best for ATI cards. Oh, and the default drivers on the CD - they cause the same problem.
Thanks.

Try installing the latest Motherboard drivers then uninstall the 4.7's completely and reinstall them.
I have the same board and drivers, but my mobo is only 4x capable so I have no problem.
Also, if the worst comes to it there's squat speed difference between 4X and 8X.

Yeah, I'm not so worried about it since I had read that the difference in speed between 4x and 8x isn't so much - and I don't want to go to different vid drivers because I like the speed I'm getting with these.
I installed VIA's 4in1s - forget which version right now, at work and PC is at home - but should I have gone to MSI's site and gotten drivers from them? Last VIA based board (EPoX) I had, they said just go with VIA's 4in1s.
Thanks FOGOLD.

Try latest VIA Hyperion drivers.
Then reinstall DX9
Then install omega drivers.

No, 4 in 1's should be just dandy.
-
Go into the ATI Control Panel and make sure 'Fast Writes' are turned off under the SmarGart tab.
-
Also if using omega drivers, goto program files/advanced gart options and turn off AGP writes ONLY. Leave AGP reads ON.
This is a known fix for 4x 8x problems.
Hyperions are just more up to date 4in1's.

Fast Writes are off. I'll take a look at the AGP writes Kev - thanks.
Pretty sure I have the latest 4in1s or Hyperions.
Thanks for the advice guys -> new to these ATI cards.
