hahahhahahahah... I would hope you turned the computer off first? :)

uhh yeah, there wasnt any thing connected when i installed it.
but electrostatic discharge is the potential cause of the failure, i dont know?
either way its no cost to me (still under warrenty) just have to suffer for a week or so until replacement part comes in

I have never ever hear of this happening as you have described. How did you determine that the power supply is at fault? Power supplys just won't die that easy unless you turn on power without anything connected to it (and many even have protection circuits againt that too). You might well have zapped your motherboard though!
You checked:
(a) forgot or accidentally turned the off at the back of the power supply or
(b) didn't knock loose the power switch connection from MB header
(c) power connector to Floppy drive on backwards with some (like Antec) power supplies will stop it form powering up (protection circuits again).
Check for power up without anything else hooked-up but the main motherboard power connectors securely engaged. (note: some boards have two! if i remeber right about you using barton process then you do have 2 (two) power supply to MB power connections required)

Got to agree with Zanth...I've built well over 100 boxes...I can't think of any way you could have fried the power supply under conditions you mentioned. You could easily zap MB or possibly CPU...one other possibility is you zapped your bios...

(a) forgot or accidentally turned the off at the back of the power supply or. there is no switch on the back as far as i can tell, or im just blind and cant find it
(b) didn't knock loose the power switch connection from MB header. jiggeled everthing today, nothing seems lose
(c) power connector to Floppy drive on backwards with some (like Antec) power supplies will stop it form powering up (protection circuits again). never tampered with any of these connectors

emachines tech support narrowed it down to either the power supply or the power button.
again all i did was pop in a audio card and when i went to start computer up, nothing happens.
hmm one thing though i did touch is the inputs for the front mic and headphones jaxs', the connectors that connect to the mother board? mabey i hooked them up improperly to the mother board?
if this was the case though all i should be able to do is disconnect theese from the mother board and try starting again.
i also tryed a different power cord, so thats not it. i dont know, the machines barley a year old...

By installing a new audio board I am asuming that you were using onboard sound. Seems you should be hooking up your front audio connectors to your new audio card instead of your MB.
Also just a thought, your power switch has a connector that comes from the front of your pc and connects to the MB. If that was taken off or switched in some way your PC will not power up. Dont mean to be insulting just could be a common mistake.

Theres your problem. Throw that piece of **** away and get a real computer.

haha

Emachines = Boat Anchors
And Ive never heard of anyone frying a Power Supply with ESD.. Never.
-
I have 3 or 4 extra power supplies in my closet. cmon over, you can have your pick.

I had a bad card that caused a "dead" machine once. Did you try it again with the card removed?

static

Fried your system by just putting in a audio card? Well to be honest I've never seen that either since I started building systems.
A few basics to check is your power lead to the motherboard from the front button. If you accidentally snagged the wire it could be your cause.
With the locking tab for you motherboards main power supply, well I doubt you could get that off very easily. The power supplies have a internal fuse you can check but if you had it disco'd when you installed your audio it shouldn't be an issue.
I'd check that power lead though from your button. It should connect down to the bottom right hand side of your board next to about 5 other leads. Watch your fan and power light and see if it will momentarily comes on when you hit the power button. It may barely show anything but if this is the case you could have zapped your MB. I've seen that happen enough times. All it takes it a little bit of static discharge to do it.

yes, still nothing, jiggled every wire and still nothing? ohh well new part will be here in 3-5 days:)

funny thing is i never touch anything else unless instuction tell me to, so all that was required to install new card was to just slip it into the slot, power up cpu and install software!
but i never made it to power up cpu, and it will be interesting to see what happens when i get the new power supply, hopefully it works and i didnt fry my mother board, but how would i frie my mother board if the computer was unplugged when i put the audio card in? mabey i fried the power supply, and audio card?
won't know until i get new part...
ohh and esd was just a guess because it seems funny that it all worked fine before i opened the machine up and touched things.
and nothing happened when i hooked everything up again?
-
Devil even if you were unplugged you could have very well discharged static electricity to the board. Frying the power supply in a situation like that is rare but not a motherboard. They tend to be more sensitive to static discharge.
If you haven't sent in the old power supply open it up and take a look at the internal fuse to see if it's blown. It's doubtful though you did any damage to it though.
Also if you take a look at the motherboard you should have a large number on it, typically between 2 of the PCI slots. Get that number and you can get a board layout. With that board layout you can look to ensure your power lead is connected to the motherboard properly. It only takes a little snag of the lead to tug it off it's pin terminal.

im an idiot!!!:o
i had the connectors on the wrong pins on the mother board for the harddrive!!! sheeesh!!!
i feel dumb. wasted all that play time!:(
ohh well at least the new power supply's comeing free of charge:D
cant believe it was that simple the whole time. they were the wires leading from the power button area to the motherboard, couldnt really tell what they were because there was a hole in a metal panel they went through and i couldnt tell what they were for except that one had written on it speaker, so i assumed they were all for my front headphone and mic jax's
turned out to be my harddrive power:o
everything seems to be good now, as soon as i moved them around the connection pins on the board i guess i got lucky and found the right ones.
thanks for all the input guys. it was a big help

Yeah some mobos with ATA133 won't boot if the master/slave drives aren't on the correct black/grey connectors on the ribbon cables.
-
Devil the wire your talking about is your HDD LED lead. That red light on the front of your computer is what it connects to. Lets you know if the drive is actively working or not. Did you happen to pull any other ones off. I've had this one off multiple times in the past and it doesn't affect whether or not your system will turn on. Either way it's good you got it up and running.
Actually was it a 4 pin connector or a small 2 pin? I'd think you'd notice if your HD ribbon cable was disco'd and also if your 4 pin power connector was too.
-
no it wasnt unhooked it was just on the wrong pins, theres 3 sets of em with like 6 on one and 4 pins on the other two
