My sister stayed with my mom for almost 2 years, with her three dirty dogs.
I like dogs.
But she never washed them and let them on the furnature. Even though my mother told her no.
So they move out and my moms condo reeks of dog.
I steamed the carpets and that seemed to help, but some rooms still have a slight dog odor.
Any ideas on getting rid of it?

Gasoline and a box of matches.
Or something from Petsmart designed for eliminating dog funk.

Also try Febreeze. It works well on hockey gear. :)

paint the place

What kind of sissy boy puts Febreeze on his hockey equipment?
-
and the problem is?
-
Buy new rugs and furniture, send sis the bill.
-
1. Replace all furniture=$4000
2: Replace all carpet=$3000
3: Bleach the concrete floor for a week=$50
4: Gut the AC ducts and re-duct=$3000
5: Replace Air handler=$1500
6: Repaint=$1000
Cost to clean up after tenants with dogs and cats leave
Priceless

You like that Doggy smell MT?
LOL I wish JBA, my sister would not pay even if she had the money.
-
They make a Febreeze just for pet odors. Also try using baking soda or borax for carpet freshener.
-
Is Fabreeze a perminant thing?
-
Pretty much. I don't know how or why it works, but it does.
-
Use gas.
Not joking; you can buy or rent a machine which creates Ozone or if you're DIY-man you can build one yourself.
Ozone is bad news to bacters and all and takes the smell away. For example Ozone generators are used when contractors rebuilt burnt apartments etc and they work really well.
In bigger amounts Ozone isn't too healthy for humans so you may want to stay with your friends few days...

I vote for Febreeze. It'll take the funk out of anything. Well, almost anything.
-
btw car dealers in here uses Ozone generators for used cars if previous owner smoked in a car. Put the generator in for a weekend and in a monday morning you have a factory fresh car.

I never take dogs back to my house. Not only is there a smell, but your friends laugh at you. I always go to their place.
-
anyone who can't stand the doggie smell is probably a cat person...
I say it'll keep out the riff raff.
-
GtoRA if your car starts to rust from some place do you just slap a sticker over it or will you sand it and repaint?
Use Ozone: rent a generator for a week (or buy one, price is up from 200$ (http://www.air-zone.com/models.html#xt120) and the smell is gone for good and won't come back.
Hell didn't knew they were that cheap; going to buy myself one (I used to smoke inside) :D

LOL
Sandman!!!

Staga
Will I have to worry about the upstairs condo? Could the Ozone get in and Gas them?
MT
There is Dog smell, and DOG smell. I do not mind Dog smell. DOG smell, on the other hand is bad.

u need to replace the carpet and paint the floors with kiltz or a good quality oil based primer.
This is what I do for this on insurance claims.
Fabrezze wont get 3 year old funk out of the carpet.
And some funk is down in the plywood floor.
the rest of the suggestions are a waste of time....

Gasoline and matches takes like fifteen minutes, how is that a waste of time?

cars have a steel/ metal floor. A lot of difference from wood.

New carpeting, furniture, painting the walls, is the only way you will rid any unwanted smells in your house. One visit from Grun told me that.

Yeah but like I said Ozone generators are also used to take away smell of smoke when apartments are being rebuilt after fire damage. At least in here houses are usually made of wood, bricks and/or concrete and usually steel is used only in outer roof :)
Well looks like GtoRA has two choices: buy new furnitures and carpets and kill rest of germs with Ozone generator OR get a generator first; put it on the room with a full power for a day or two (oh and RTFM) and decide after that :)

UMM the ONLY way to get rid of smoke smell (all of it) is to strip the walls down to the framing and kiltz the framing members
U have to lose the all the sheetrock and insulation
I do that for insurance claims also.
-
Yeah and my family did own a share of a Motel which burnt at christmas 1995 (http://www.onnettomuustutkinta.fi/uploads/o5e7ryyx1.pdf) and my friend is a constructor specialized on repairing apartments and houses after water damages.
All I'm saying is GtoRa should give Ozone generator a try and use heavier methods if that won't work.

Holy Crap! Morpheus...
Thank You!

I believe http://www.jibjab.com has some helpful information regarding this.
-
Its not porn...she's just showing the correct way to do a self-breast exam. ;)
-
The floors are concrete under the rugs.
It just BARELY smells like dog, now, I really do not think I need to rip all the sheet rock out.
I like Staga's idea. My mom is not a rich lady and my sister prolly won't pony up a dime.
-
Just soak a dozen or so cats in gas...toss them in the house with a lit match... problem over.... next....?

removing rock and ins is for smoke damage. If you have crete floors just carpet replacement will suffice.
Scrub the floors with bleach and soap before reinstalling...

Did you ever notice that the area between a dogs pads on its paws smells like corn chips? Seriously.

If you're nearby when a horse is getting re-shoed or cleaned up, smell the clippings from one of their hoofs. Labs treat it like a drug... chew on it, roll in it. Then they have to sleep outside....
-
Any smell a dog leaves will eventually disappear (otherwise they wouldn't pee on every bush they see). You try an ionizer until it fades?
-
I think Staga's idea is your answer. It's easy, it won't hurt to give it a try and I've heard it does amazing things on getting rid of odors.
-
I`d suggest throwing a party at the place. Invite about 20 of the rowdiest peeps you can come up with. Serve cheap beer with lots and lots of pickled boiled eggs. Insist that these folks have to stay a minimum of 2 hours. You will not notice the dog smell after this.

Our current home was previously owned by a person that had three large dogs and apparently they were ok with dog feces. The home had very nice looking marble throughout. When we purchased the home we spent a little under one year remodelling without moving in. The house was open every day and was exposed to the elements due to no windows for about a month. After we remodelled there was a portion of the original marble we intended to keep but once the AC was up and running the smell of dog was unbearable. We ended up ripping out the remainder of the marble. Dog smell is tough to eliminate.
