Healthy heart first. Diet. Cardio. Get addicted to the endorphins. Then start losing weight through either weight lifting or strenous sport excercise. Make it a lifestyle choice and a committment to it for the rest of your life. Miss a week or two every now and then, splurge on the junkfood, but return to your routine soon after your "binge".
Brainwashing my kids, I tell the same para above as such:

Feels like it will take ten years to loose this weight.

November of last year I was down to 118 lbs from 180. You can do it - ya just gotta believe. :D
-
Nash, what is your weight up to now?
I'm 158 but fat for my size. I should be around 140.
-
Around 185... I think 175 was about average for me.
I'm liftin' weights though, so it's no longer just fat.
-
South Beech, you get to eat steak, and spinnach, and then you get bread about 1-2 weeks into it...

I wouldn't recommend your particular diet plan though... I hear it's expensive. ;)
-
Not only is it expensive, it sure costs a lot. :)

As you get older your metabolism slows down and you don't burn calories as fast. Exercise is always good but it will not help with reducing fat as much as a proper diet. I suggest you check out 'Weight Watchers' in your area. Their program is not 'smoke and mirrors'. It's a very straight forward method of losing weight. You can eat anything you want as long as you accept the 'cost' and realize you have to stay within your 'budget' if you want to lose weight.
I lost 30 pounds since March..., took a little break without gaining anything back,.... and am about to try for another 'thirty'.
Good luck....

The easiest thing to do is stop drinking soda - if you do to begin with.
Many soda drinkers will down multiple cans a day without realizing they;re ingesting upwards of 200 calories with each serving.
Just dont buy into ****ty diet crazes... Atkins, etc. Calories are calories and the trick to losing weight is burning more than you take in - it doesnt matter if theyre fat, carbs, or human flesh. Its no different than paying your bills, only in this case, you want your account to go into negative numbers.
Cut the 'income' and do some big spending and youll be amazed how quick youll spill the weight. Also - age is not a barrier so dont let that discourage you.
-
haha vort! "shortish torso" - I've never heard that description before.
Senna, just stay hungry and push fluids:
-Vitamins, antioxidants (blueberries kick ass, or bluegreen algae),
-start by replacing one meal with a 'snack size meal'. Replace whatever you're eating now with more veggies, salads, etc.
-Cut the sugar (no softdrinks, non-natural juices).
-More water.. Fats are processed and moved throughout the body much easier when you're hydrated. Strive for a gallon a day.
-If you feel the urge to eat, force a glass down.
Don't worry about what to eat and what not to eat too much though. Just scale everything back just a tad until you adjust.
btw, go for an enema while you're at it... you'll kickstart your diet and lose a few pounds in one day! :D
-
Watch a lot of pr0n and do like when you're flying a Fw burn a lot of calories there :D
-
I can still see my feet, that is all that matters.
I eat little, but drink beer... I've been told that's the worse.

Actually the water diet does work. A friend of mine did that and he lost weight. Whenever he was hungry, he just drank water till he was full. I need a diet that includes beer though.

I never drink sodas. Cant imagine loosing weight by strictly eating less or dieting. It would involve some excercise like jogging to burn the calories.

In the past four months, I've dropped 30 pounds simply by drastically reducing/eliminating my intake of fat and sugar.

Eat less adult animals. Eat more baby animals.

My normal weight should be 160 to 170 lbs, but I had reached close to 200 lbs. I started the South Beach Diet with my wife 5 weeks ago. I went down from 197 lbs to 181 lbs. I didn't have the sudden drop that was supposed to happen in the first two weeks, but I have averaged over 3 lbs a week even after starting the 2nd phase where you get some good stuff back.
I think it jumpstarted my metabolism that used to just burn up all the calories I could eat. I have even cheated with some Cheesecake a couple of times for no penalties.
All of this with no exercise. When I reach my normal weight I can probably get away with almost unrestricted diet if I just get rollerblading again the way I used to: 16 to 24 miles a day for 3 to 5 days a week ;)
-
LOL you must buy alot of roller blade wheels. :D Sour, I know what your saying about expensive if you really want to eat right. Ive found that a diet based on lots of fruits & salads and protien works well if Im running. Big carbs once a week like spaggetti is ok. Just got to watch the carbs daily. I mean if your gona eat a burger you need a burger bun or dont eat the burger at all. Keep the ideas coming... Actually I have basic knowledge about foods and nutrition. I was just wondering what other people had to say on this and their own ideas.

30 lbs is alot. Thats amazing. Though I think its more possible than it sounds if eating habbits were bad to start with.

hmm...theres a lot of fat people playing this game, can anyone else smell a frivolous lawsuit? :D

Try it....I did it too. I switched to diet sodas and cut down the pasta and bread intake. Not really Atkins, but I did read his book. I went from about 320 to 280 and have maintained that pretty easily by just limiting the sugars and not overloading with bread and pasta. My fiancee dropped to 120 from 167 on WeightWatchers Online over the last year. The only real exercise I have added is taking walks two or three times a week in the evenings if we have time. I also play softball one nite a week, but our team sucks and usually gets run ruled by the 5th inning so its not that strenuous. :)

Well... I must admit... I put on an extra 40 pounds in three years by eating poorly. Ten more to go and I'm back to my happy-weight.
I drink a lot of coffee... now it's all black. The "additives" were loaded with calories.

Stop playing AHII. Take that time to exercise...
Well, ok. Die fat.

Alright boys, since you seem to have all the answers, I'll give you one that is baffeling the medical community.
I've been dieting (1500 ca1/50g fat) for 7 months now following a consult with a dietician and in those same 7 months have been working out 6-10 times a week (6x aerobic classes, 2 pilates, 2 weight training classes) and in those 7 months I have not lost a SINGLE POUND.
Here are the details before you ask for them:
Yes, I've had my thyroid tested. They did a series of blood tests in April. Yes, I'm drinking enough water based on nutricinal guidelines. No, it's not that muscles weighs more than fat and I'm converting it, a trainer at the gym did some tests on me and said I had 34% body fat which is considered obese apparently. No, I'm not loosing inches either, did a little the first month, haven't since then. And no, my body is not suppose to be this size, I weighed 103 until 5 years ago (but that's a story for another post).
Any ideas anyone? Like I said, I've consulted a dietician, a work-out specialist, a doctor, and a support group, planning on going back to the doctor by the end of the month before I have a mental breakdown. Ah, speaking of which, time for step aerobics.

Your Pregnant?
-
a couple years back I quit drinking soda. after talking to the Dr I realized that I was getting over half of my daily calories from soda.
basically I could have ate half as much or eat the same, drink water and eliminate twice as many calories.
other than the Atkins (which was too big a pain for me to stick with), any diet is just going to slow down your metabolism as you start cutting back on food. so if you just diet and don't do anything else you are likely to lose nothing but energy.
I've been loosing fairly steady since the DR put me on this very low salt diet (3 months or so).
I don't think it has anything to do with what I'm actually eating (and I'm beginning to suspect this may be the key factor in most other diets), but more the procedure I have to go through before I eat.
first I can't just stop and pick up fast food. there is not much if any restaurant or pre-packaged food that I can have. so I either have to plan ahead and bring something or manage to make it home when I get hungry.
once I'm home, and have access to food I can eat, I still have to prepare it.
most of the time that comes down to, between scheduling and prep time, it turns out I'm not as hungry as I though. where before I would get a bit hungry and stop and pick something up or grab something instant from the fridge, now it's more often than not just more trouble than it's worth. snacking (other than fresh fruit) is mostly out, since it's such a pain that it's usually not worth bothering with and I'll just wait for the scheduled meal.
the end result is eating is such a pain in the prettythang it's just not worth it, combine that with the fact that most of what I can eat has no flavor, and and the crippling pain that hits me a couple hours later if I go off the diet at all, and you end up with a diet that you can lose weight on and is very easy to stick too.
btw- if you are closing in on 200, don't get to excited until you've lost over 25-30 lbs. you lose about 15% before your body thinks you're in a famine and starts lowering your energy to save fat. a lot of people lose the first bit then take a break to celebrate, (you feel like celebrating plus at that point you are starving, so it's not hard to fall for) it comes back much faster than it went off.
