How would you rank them as a band? They seem to be almost overlooked to me. They had so many great songs.

I'd rank The Cars as one of the best bands and Candy-O as one of the best records.

Good band.
Good music.
Candy-O album cover would make a nice avatar.
Well....maybe....
-
Candy-O was great stuff. Won front row tickets to see them later on and they were still a great show.
-
Rick Ocasek (sp?) produces all the best Weezer stuff. He is a god.

I was 14 when their debut album broke radio in 78'. It was a huge moment as the Cars had pushed Boston off the best all time selling debut album. Unfortunately the band petered out in a hush of insignifigance after Heartbeat City but those first few albums, especially "the Cars" and "Candy-O" were really big players musically to my generation of musicians.
Lets see if I can recall the names:
Ric Ocasek
Ben Orr
Greg Hawks
Elliot Easten and
the Dave Robinson
Mano...that was a long time ago. THink Ill grab some Cars CDs to take to work! Thanks Nuke :)

RIP Ben Orr.

I love classic rock, but THE CARS are on the bottom of my list. Down there with supertramp, stevemiller and the eagles.
I always change the station when one of thier songs come on.
-
Cars were OK, but Supertramp live was incredible. You musta been smokin bad weed dude!
-
good treadmill music
-
Favorite CARS song is MAGIC.
Supertramp and The Eagles are 2 of my favorite classic rock bands
-
The Cars are good, but you cannot beat Jungle Love.
:aok

the Cars were a very innovative and accomplished late '70s band in a transitional time in popular American music. Rick Ocasek is brilliant and he gets to pipe Paulina Porizkova. What could possibly be wrong with that.
Ben Orr.
I'm a picker I'm a grinner I'm a lover and I'm a sinner. I play my music in the suuuuuuuuuun. Hates Steve Miller, Get a rope!!!!!

The Cars were a great recording band. ...so many great hits. Live, they put on one of the least energetic shows I've ever seen. It looked like they were practicing, barely moving in the course of the 1.5 hour show (Boston Garden, 87ish).

Never saw them live but by '87 they were a few years down the road from old news.

I saw them in New Jersey in 1985 and had the exact same reaction.

Loved there first two albums. Let's Go is a great tune.

The Cars and The Police were big favs back then, but I am actually rediscovering some obscure stuff I listened to back then.
I never realized why I liked em back then, but listening to Echo and the Bunnymen is like listening to a cross between Velvet Underground and the Doors.
Oh well, retreating back into obscurity now.

All Mixed up!
Great tune.
