has a built in pop-up blocker... ummm that's all i've noticed as a casual "user", so far.  oh.. and something to manage "add-ons."  both in internet tools.

258mb, tho'.... so who knows what evil lurks in the heart of Microsoft.

Just installed it on Home XP.  No problems so far, although it restricted some aspects of this bulletin board until I assured it Aces High is totally okay.

To be honest, I love it. It actually gets rid of some unecessary programs that run in the background plus it offers better virus control (living on campus here its a big deal).

It has improved my framerates, I swear on this. In IL2:FB I can play on full settings and everything runs fine.

As for connecting to the online games, I unfortunately suffer a firewall through our school so....wouldn't know.

I disabled the Security Center and Windows Firewall.  The only thing I don't like about SP2 is that I have to re-enable Automatic Updates in order for the Windows Update website to function.

Per HTC's suggestion, I disable Automatic Updates until I need it.

You don't have to turn on automatic updates. Mine is Off and the windows update works

Switch BITS to manual. Windows update will start the service and shut it off after you finish "Manually updating your windows"

Which application? Check the Service status if it's running, should say started, if not, right click and start service.

Both Windows Update, and BITS are set to auto matic now, but when I press start application, it says error cannot start that application on local machine. Doesn't matter what I set it at, manual or automatic, same error message.

Tried it Bighorn, wasn't it tho. I looked around further and discovered that in the 'log on' part of the 'properties' menu, I had to 'enable application for this hardware profile', just right clicking or setting it from the 'general' tab didn't work.

Guess i'll go download now:)

Thanks for the help .

Post by: AWCHKRS on August 31, 2004, 07:23:20 AM
Hello everyone,
Up dated to DX 9c , then I updated ZoneAlarm Pro firewall, and also drivers for my BFG 5700 Ultra video card . I
I then turned on autoupdate and then went to Windows Update page , and did the SP2 update .

Went in with out a problem .

AH 2 version 10 runs just fine , at the present time .

fyi , I have found that Avast AntiVirus (Home Version) works great with SP 2 upgrade .

 AMD 3200+ 64 bit
BFG 5700 Ultra 128 ddr2 ram
 1 GB ddr2 RAM
SB Audgy
 400 watt EnerMax power supply

   Regards

If anyone's interested you can download, and burn to CD, SP2 at http://www.download.com.  Handy if you have more than one PC to upgrade or if you have a re-format looming in the future.
Title: BIG Problems with Windows XP SP2
Post by: Happy1 on September 01, 2004, 04:57:19 AM
I ordered the Windows XP sp2 CD a wk ago from Microsoft & rec'd
it today, I immediately installed it & was very happy w/my upda-
ted Control Panel.

My problems began by my NOT being able to access any websites
on the Internet as I kept receiving the "Internet Explorer.. can not
find Server or DNS Server"  :(

I tried everything to make it work but to no avail, I finally ended
Windows XP sp2 by restoring my former info on my computer.

Would any1 be knowing as to how I could fix the "Can not find Server or DNS Error"??  I really would like to have sp2 on my com-
puter.

Thx for ur help,

Regards,

Happy1  :D

Happy1,

My first guess would be the XP built in firewall. It seems a bit more pro-active than the previous version and does not always give you a message stating that it has blocked something.

If you're using another firewall try disabling the XP firewall. I initially had some network problems after installing SP2 and since I use Sygate I just turned off the XP firewall and all is good now.

My two cents,,,

Good luck

Cheers,

Happy1  :D

P.S. My other firewall is the free version of Zone Alarm.

I just thought I would mention that I have only had one problem with SP2.

(Of course, I turn off the Firewall, annoying AntiVirus software whining about NAV 2002, and I do manual updates myself).

In order to keep XP from being a worm haven, SP2 limits the number of "half open" TCP/IP connections to 10. Pre-SP2, the value was unlimited.

P2P networks make use of TCP/IP connections that are in many ways similar to those that worms use to spread, so as a result, Kaazaa, Shareaza, and other similar programs will not connect well, and you'll see errors in the System Log. I think the error is 4226.

Anyway, there is an unofficial patch that increases the number of these types of connections from 10 to something like 16 million. I myself set it to around 100 and have had no more problems with P2P networks.

You can read about this issue and how to fix it at:
http://forums.shareaza.com/showthread.php?threadid=25701

and

http://forums.shareaza.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24260

Hope this helps,

Llama

Jet,

Under control panel there is an icon labeled "Security Center".
You can disable it thru there.

Good luck
