I have to say, all the posts about being addicted to this game are very true. I find myself totaly enveolped in this game. Watching Discovery Wings to learn more about the planes I'm flying and flying against.
Reading books based on WWII accounts to learn even more.
I've never been a "sim guy" as it goes but have tried damm near every MMORPG there is and so far this ones got them beat. The small player base (opposed to some other games) is such a huge treat. I have no doubt I will enjoy this for a long time to come.
Question though, has there ever been events like the attack on Dec. 7th? Modeled to have about 5-10 american fighter allowed to take off to thwart the Jap planes. Map designed to show only the Island and the ocean for the Jap carriers. Lots of deck guns.
I was thinking about this last night and although my knowledge of coding is very small I would imagine that the details of making this happen arnt that difficult considering the already setup CT and HT's terreain editing. Is this battle too....sensitive to reenact?
I would imagine that it would be a pretty short battle considering the time constraints that would have to be imposed to keep it accurate.
Anyway, keep up the good work HT and the flyers that shoot me down all the time. You make me work and more importantly think harder. It is a good thing. Other games (leveling based) reach a point that there isnt much you can handle given enough time and training. Our game is different, players for other games would say it is a 100% pvp enviroment leading to a more advance gameset (IMO). There is only so much challenge in AI. Fighting another person, trying to get inside there head is a whole different thing.
Thanks again to you all

If you don't have it, or haven't read it. I reccomend getting Robert Shaws, Fighter Combat book.
Lots of great information on Air combat maneuvers (ACM) and diagrams.

Welcome to AH!
There are a couple of ways to get immersion in the WWII scenarios. There is the Combat Theater which has realistic maps and planesets, and there are scenarios which take place over several weekends.
There is a link at the top of the page here for Battle of Britain scenario.
As far as terrains, Citabria (fester) is the reigning expert. I found the editor WAY too hard compared to others I have used (Operation Flashpoint, UT, etc.)
This game IS addictive as hell. Be sure and join a squad for even more online fun!

It gets worse...
Wait til you sit in front of your computer for 12 hours in a row... It'll happen. :D

Scenarios are run regularly, Mini setups or Snapshots are run weekly.
I did have the honor to lead a Pearl Harbour attack in warbirds. It was awesome sight with smoke & planes everywhere.
14 allied plots agreed to be vulched 3 times each. After the third time they could "attempt" to take off.
Since we were trying to be fair we gave them multiple chances to respawn.
I think 4 made it into the air, and only 2 planes were shot down by them.
Although we lost others to ack, etc.
AH is rich in historical events. Largely due to a small dedicated group of CM's (community managers) who pour a LOT of time into them.

ive been taking much more notice of the CT and special events area lately. The last time I tried to join the special events I got a blue msg saying too late, please leave :(
I did join a squad though, WOD, good guys. Then have helped me huge.
Estes, looked for that book on Amazon and couldnt find it. Is the title "Fighter Combat book"?
-
you have to arrive to special events a little early. and sometimes they require registration on your part or registration on your squad's part. some, however, welcome walkons. good to see new people taking interest in SEA and CT.

Octo as Slapshot has posted it's Fighter Combat: Tactics and Maneuvering by Robert L. Shaw. I actually own this book and I must say at times it's very dry but it's still worth the purchase.

thanks, just ordered it from Amazon

"We admitted we were powerless over AHII- that our lives had become unmanageable." That's the first step!!:D . I've stopped sleeping because of this damn game! But it does get better. Some days you will want to play for only a couple of hours instead of all night. I'm afraid joining a squad will make it more fun then I'll stop working! Welcome and remember to sleep 8 hours work 8 hours and play AHII 8hours. Just not in the same 8 Hour period!
Peace

You just made me rember the night mares I used to have. When I first started playing AW I could not stop replaying ACM tactics in my head. Would toss and turn all night with each manuver.

At the top of this forum you will find a blue button named 'calendar'.
It gives a nice overview over what and more importantly WHEN events are being run in the Special Events Arena.
Most of them you can join as long as you enter the arena 15-20 minutes prior to start. A few of them you need to sign up for or be in a squad to be able to participate.
These events give a whole different experience than the everyday run of the Main Arena.

longest stretch i've played AH was 13 hours, with a half hour lunch break. when i first started, all i wanted to do was play. nearly lost sight of everything else. the game is addictive and we can all admit to being addicted. you'll here us all teh time referring to each other as "AH addicts." we're a proud cult of sorts. its when you cant go through a day w/o thinking of what you were doing the previous night and how you can improve on it that you know ur hooked.

rofl, rehab for AHII addicts....
"hello, my name is Odi and I'm addicted to AHII"

octospider0,
The only online games I've every played are this and it's predecessor (Warbirds).
How big are the biggest MMORPG games in terms of player base, numbers online at once, etc. and what are they called.

25.4.2004
EVE ONLINE TOPS 10.000 SIMULTANEOUS PLAYERS IN THE SAME WORLD
REYKJAVIK, Iceland, April 28 CCP announced today that EVE Online has broken through the 10.000 simultaneous users threshold, when 10.396 users played EVE Online at the same time in the same world. This confirms that a "one world" game design is not just a vision but a reality and breaks the boundaries a multi-world (shards) game design places on players. "The EVE 'one world' design has enabled CCP to create the single largest MMORPG world to date according to our information," said Hilmar Veigar Petursson, CTO at CCP.

My favourite " you know your'e addicted" is when a car pulls out in front of you in traffic , you pull back on the wheel and think "no problems , I'll just go vertical"

haha, HT you are a not a player :)
Many many times before i sleep, i think complicated acm 1vs3-4.
I try to compute their movements in real time .
After i try to do it in reality. Very difficult. But sometimes i succeed for some 20-30 sec. and sometimes my hand skills dont follow my
mind movements, ( im a 43 yo tard :) )
When in these rare moments i succeed to follow the movements of 3-4 nmy planes at the same time is like time stops.
This is the Zen of Dogfighting :)
ps i usualy wake up as holes are opening in my aluminum skin:)

the game I left to come here "star wars galaxys" had and 20k+ player base. Before that is was Ultima Online which at its peak was somthing 60K. Both had multi servers for different countries.
With that many players, there is no way for a dev team to have personal responses let alone their dev posting on the boards.
