Title: What's a Good Joy Stick?
Post by: AWMac on August 14, 2004, 05:39:59 AM
Need a new Joy Stick.  My MS Sidewinder FF2 died recently and I'll be dammed if I'm gonna buy 1 from EBay. They are trying to sell them at $235.00 a stick.

Please no Logiteck Sticks ...Been there, Done that.  They suck.

Need good sound advice.

Thanks,

MacMAW

CHpro USB Fighter stick - you'll wear out before it does...

Yeah I was looking at the CH Products...especially the pedals... but you say the Fighter Stick is great?

Let me check it out then.

Was also looking at Saitek sticks.

Thanks for the Advice!

AWMac,

Have a look at the Saitek X-45. You get a stick and a seperate throttle with more buttons on both than you'll ever use.

Durability of the stick depends on who you talk to. Some people have had bad experiences and others (like me) have sticks which are years old and still working fine.

If you get one, I suggest you also look into getting seperate rudder pedals. Rather than going for the 'twisty' rudder (something I loved about Microsoft sticks) you have a 'rocker' which you operate with your little finger and it's hard to get to used to.

the x45 is about 40 bucks for the set at the saitek website.  Refurb but comes with a full warranty.

The name "Refurbished" kinda reminds me of having a circumcision reversed... it's almost like  my "Real 4Skin" but it should work as new...

And then it's "AS IS"....No Warranty.

Would you take yer refurbished dork out on the Town for some hard tight flyin...?

Point, Match, Touche...Game over.

LOL Here in Oklahoma we have "Refurbished Trailer Homes"... know why they are refurbished?

Cuz they were tossd a mile or two by a Tornado. They might not leak in a storm but they are cursed tornado magnets...

Same thing as folks with homes on the East Coast Beaches.....Nice houses but hurricanes happen...then they cry "Ohhh woe is me..."  Want a nice home? move away from the beach, drive to the beach..."Here's your sign!"

Yep I live in Oklahoma...in the middle of Tornado Alley, softbal sized hail, sideways rain, mud rain, fish fall from the storm, had chickens, cows, horses fly by and some end up in my back yard, roof and pool. Storm passes it's time to check the highway for fresh kill and fire up the grill.  Saves on grocery bills....Help neighbours clear trees and animals. Can't eat nuthin from an Earthquake, or a Hurricane...maybe fish...Floods... snakes are good, if seasoned right... Tornados provide and take away.  May of '98 F5 came down the I44 from OKC towards Tulsa.  Devastated Stroud... they may never rebuild. Worst thing was human body parts... along with everything else scattered from tree to tree.  took 3 Months to clean most of it.  Not hard to find bodies in the boiling Summer Sun.
Awful sight.

But I'd rather live here than anywhere else in the USA. I can leave my doors unlocked all day long, kids bikes in the front yard never get stolen, cars unlocked all day/night long.  I could leave a $20.00 bill on the step of my house in the morning and it will be there at 5pm.

We know how to live ok in Oklahoma... Oklahoma is OK!

had my "refurbished" x45 for 2 years now without any trouble at all.  Again, it has the same warranty as the new one but pick your poison.

CH Fighterstick USB and Pedals here. Never a problem, built like a tank.  You'll notice that CH users don't often post "what's a good joystick" threads.

CH is expensive, though.

ra, yep they are! I went to many sites including CH Products... both the Pedals and the Stick were $245.00 a piece.

But I feel as though I'm in a Bondage over the choice... *see there ya'll go again "Bondage"  peerves!!!

Thrustmaster Afterburner II is good. Has stick and throt and abuncha buttons. Option of rudder on throt, or twisty stick. Adjustable tension settings blah blah blah. Around 80 bucks, maybe cheaper now. I use it and love it.

I have a Saitek X36 USB I'll sell you.. still has a warranty for another 9 months.. 30 dollars. It's a nice black color as opposed to the X45's bright blue and 300 LED's on it.  Might even be able to get it this weekend if you don't live to far.

I have one of those as well.. pay the shipping and you can have it.. I'm not sure how well it works.. I can use it.. but I hate gameport.  It worked in AH2.. but I only ever used it for decent.

I switched from CH Combatstick+Pro Throttle+TM Pedals to the X-45 a year and a half ago.

I was worried tha the stick would break, since it looks a bit cheap. But so far it's put up with a good deal of abuse, and hasn't slowed down at all. The only two complaints I can think of, are 1) the rediculously large pinky switch. 2). the rubber cover for the "mouse cursor control" wore out, so I've devloped a funny callous on my thumb.  For the Price, I don't see how you can beat the X-45.

Do like I did and get the best of both worlds - I have the Saitek X45 set up, and the CH Pro Pedals (USB).  It's a great combination!

Sikboy - the curved cover on the pinkie switch comes off - I did that on mine and now it fits my hand great.  It just snaps out of place.

I like the CH Products Flightstick Pro.  It's based on a stick that's been around for a long, long time, but I really like the feel of it.  Very solid, too.  I've been using CH Products sticks for about 10 years and love them.  The Flightstick Pro for USB is about $90.

X45 with CH Pro Peds

best bang for your buck

pay extra $11 at compusa for 12 month instore replacement plan on X45, then trade in stick for brand new one at least every 12 months (for the cost of another service plan - $11) or before if something wigs out

the ch pro peds will last for many X45 setups

5 years of flying so far heres the stick wrap up

Started with a Logitech..lasted about 6 months and died...no help available from anyone

Went to a TM setup..also wore it out in about a year, but TM offered to fix it for a price...hmm

Went to a CH Prothrottle, stick, rudders (gameport) Dang things still work (wherever they are) but upgraded all to USB at the point where I could sneak that much cash past the wife hehe. Been happy with them.

Set up a second system about a year and a half ago, attached an X45 with CH propedals and I have to say it works great. The stick actually has a bit of feel too it, where the Ch is kinda limp (no pun intended).Bought it new from New Egg for about 80 bucks, added and extra years warranty (bringing it to 2 years) for 5 bucks more with free shipping. Pretty sweet deal

Imho, your pretty safe with the X45 (I have a few mates that heve been flying with refurbed  X45's for a lng time) or Ch stuff. Feel would be the biggest difference, but I've come to really depend on the trimwheels on the X45, and really like the stupidly simple profile software available for it at the website ( the stuff in the box is crap)

YMMV, Caveaot Emptor, and all that good stuff. Good luck.

I have one here you can have. The rudder potentionmeter is shot (after about 4 months of use) and TM can fix it for about 50 bucks + shipping....but wait..thats what they cost new.. ;)

trying to find a good replacement and the evo has wierd throttle placement.

In the X52 the z axis (rudders, right?) is "twisty stick" set up, as opposed to the X45 where the rudders were in a rocker switch under the throttle.

The CH USB sticks are the best I've ever used.  I've been a long-term CH fan since 1996.  I've never been disapointed in the quality, performance, or functionality.  You can't go wrong with a CH USB Fighterstick and USB pro pedals.  The pedals have toe-brake capability in addition to just rudder (and can be used as throttle and brake in racing games).

I say go CH and don't look back.
