Savvis has been playing ring around the routers in chicago for quite a while now... aren't 4 hops within chicago a little, ummm, excessive?

it's 187 not 167

Not really Shane. Savvis is absorbing the Cable and Wireless network, and when an ISP gets that many pipes, it is not unusual to have multiple routers in the same building involved with a route.
Chicago happens to be one of the seven major Internet gateways/POP's. Some huge networks meet there.

at least that "loopback" router seems to have disappeared.
used ot be about 14 hops to MA, now it's gone up to 18, partly due to atdn and partly to savvis...
pings have been consisently higher too from 35-50, up to 47-67...
ah well, hopefully adtn and saavis will eventually get their ducks in a row and tweak their routing downwards somewhat.
