Title: So close to dieing today.
Post by: AWMac on August 17, 2004, 06:01:53 PM
My Guardian Angel put in some serious overtime today... for that I am soooo greatful.  Here's what happened.

I tend to leave early each morning to avoid the morning rush traffic. Plus it gives me time to relax and get settled prior to chaining myself to the desk.

7am CST just 2 blocks from my workplace I entered an intersection at 20 MPH and I had the green light.  Halfway into the intersection appears a 8 year old or so Ford Taurus at 45+ MPH.  I T-Boned him and it caved in the entire left side of his Ford and spun him around facing the direcion he came from.

I was driving the wifeys 1999 Jeep Grand Cheerokee Laradeo because it's more comfortable on my back.  My 2nd week back to work from the back fracture in 6/29/04.  The inpact practically ripped everything from the engine block forward off the Jeep and spun me 45% to the right.

The first person on the scene, less than 10 seconds from inpact. checked for injuries and gave me his card...he happens to be an Attorny.

Amulance, Fire Dept, Police arrive check me out. just beat up a lil.  Back messed up again.  The other driver cuts and puntures on right arm from the glass.

He's the kicker:  This other driver is has no insurance, expired tags and no drivers lic.  Was partying the night before and stayed at a friends house to which he woke up late and was in a hurry to get home to change for work.

The police gave him 5 citations and let him walk.  The Police officer told me to ask this other guy how he wants to handle it and also said to beware of this guy not wanting to have it go to Court.  I asked him and he said he'd pay for everything and not to worry. He works at a restuarant.

I have GEICO insurance and they are going to take this guy for everything he has. I called the Dealer that I bought the Jeep from 2 years ago and he advised to have the Jeep towed to his body shop so GEICO doesn't try and screw me on the assessment.  I checked with the body shop after the jeep arrived there and they all said it would probably be tottaled due to the front frame damage.

A quick trip to my Dr's office, xrays. nothing broken. A shot in my butt and appts with the Orthopediatric that had my back all last Month.

Tough Day today.  if I would have been 2 seconds faster.. This guy would have came through my drivers side door and I would not be here.

Good to be alive!   Guadian Angel !!!

That bites, but not nearly so much as it could have.  I'm glad you're mostly alright.

Stupid red light runners.  I swaer, if I were a police officer I could hand out tickets like candy to red light runners.  I see it all the time.  Utterly selfish people with no consideration of others.  Thoughtless, self centered morons.

Yep... I know it will hurt tomorrow even more... But I can't afford to miss work.

I'll just hunker down and bear it.  Guess this made up my mind concerning the DA Retiree mobilization/Recall.

Man I feel cursed with bad luck this year.

January my lil Brother died.  My Mom falls and breaks her hip.

Feburary a car accident.  And an unexplained mishap at work that dropped traffic "Communications Company...not good.  Cost me 3 days off no pay".

March, April and May....low profile.

June my Son knocks over a huge TV causing a near death incident, but results in a total of 18 stitches.  I injured my back lifting the TV back onto another stand. Back compression fracture of L/10 and a Buldge in a disc.

July out the whole Month for back. Short term Disability... Drs screwed up paperwork and I didn't get paid for 4 weeks... Bills, Bills, Phone calls....

August  Returned to work on the 9th...Today this accident.

I need prayers guys that I can make it through this year.

Thanks in Advance.

Had something similar happen to me years back.  A black Mustang ran a red light in front of my Delta 88, I slammed on brakes and missed hitting him by inches.  Then slid sideways (road was wet) and almost got the car under control before being t boned by a Oldsmobile Vista cruiser station wagon.  I had a passenger who wasn't hurt.

Fortunately for me, a Coast Guardsman was behind the Mustang and came to court as a witness to testify the Mustang was indeed there and did run a red light.

The folks in the vista cruiser didn't even see the Mustang.  They tried to make it look in court like the Mustang wasn't even there.

The cruiser had 5 people in it and three were hurt with relatively minor injuries, the worst being a broken ankle of the driver, who was driving barefooted.

I said in court if I had clipped that Mustang going through that intersection with a green light, I would have probably caused more damage and that's why I tried to avoid hitting him.  My justification for slamming on the brakes was it was a natural reaction.  When asked in court how close I was from the Mustang, my passenger said you couldn't fit a piece of paper between the cars.

The Mustang did return to the scene while we were sitting in the State Trooper's car, and my passenger pointed it out to him, but we couldn't pursue it and he got away scott free.

Glad you're not hurt Mac.  I have a habit of looking both ways now at lights, and instinctively slow down before going through them.

This guy appear like from nowhere, he never even hit his breaks.  I'm just worried that this guy is gonna skip out of Oklahoma.

Mac you had better call that lawyer, and fast. If you think the guy is gonna "be good" for the damages you are sorely mistaken. Get a judgement against the fool. Hopefully you had UI/PIP coverage.

rpm  yessir I have UI/PIP coverage. And again that Laywer that was 1st on the scene gave me his card and said if I needed any help to call him.  Lawyers are not allowed to solicite business at accidents so he told me what  he said  was an unofficial advice to me. I gave GEICO the Lawyers name.  Besides this Lawyer owns the firm he's with. Also it is very respectable in Tulsa.  HUH Respect and Lawyers in the same breath... Guess I really to a good jarring. LOL

MAC - sorry to hear about your bad year. :(

I have a question about the TV stand incident. Here's why: I recently purchased a new Panasonic 32 inch TV. It was delivered to me in a package which included the stand and a DVD recorder. I assembled the stand, but no way could I even think of lifting the TV onto the stand without assistance - according to the text on the box it came in, it weighs 61Kg. Coincidentally, I was having some plumbing work done here, and the two plumbers showed up late. Hehe, I got them to help get the TV on the stand. ;)

About 2 weeks later, I had a call from the TV supplier saying that there was a product recall on the stand. Apparently there is a problem with it - it might collapse if messed with by a child.

But I don't have any children around here (I have a sign on the door warning that all trespassing children will be eaten - I soft pedal on Halloween). I gave the TV a good shake, and the stand showed no inclination (excuse the pun) to topple. Seems like a perfectly good stand.

So when the guy came to deliver the replacement, I refused delivery. Why? Because I know that he's not sticking around to help me assemble it, and the TV would be on the floor until I could get help etc.  I just didn't want the hassle when my stand is perfectly fine.

But your story has me a little worried. What happened exactly for your TV to topple?

beet1e  the wifey purchased the TV without a stand.  I had one at home. It was about knee high 2 shelves, duel opening glass doors. had VCR top shelf, playstation bottom shelf.  Stand had 4 wheels.

The TV was on the same stand for 2 years and never a problem. My 5 year old Son would lay ing front of it with his feet on the stand.. I was always in his backside about it.

June 29th he was laying infront of the TV and again with his feet on the stand... I guess he rocked it...and it came down on him. Thank GOD he had a few pillows under his head and a blanket on top of him.

My Daughter came upstairs to my puter room screaming that the TV fell on Jake.. and she couldn't get the TV off of him.  I rushed downstairs and the wife had the TV off of him and he had a wicked deep gash in his forehead. Wifey kept a compress on his head and kept him from going into shock..We called 911 and it seemed like forever before the ambulance arrived.

Thanks SLO.... it justs bothers me to no end thinking if I was just only 2 seconds faster I'd be dead today.......

Gawd that just keeps ringing in my head... what would my family be doing right now other than crying... funeral arrangements.

2 seconds is not alot of time...

Feeling the pain increase now, shot wearing off... but at least I'm feeling.

Just glad to be posting here right now.

Well MAC, guess what? I had an incident of my own just yesterday. Picture this (remember, we drive on the left): I was at a crossroads waiting at a red light. It's a minor road, so quite a long wait. Finally I get a green. I was turning right and although there is no green arrow for that turn, oncoming traffic has a longer red. Even though I knew this, I always emerge cautiously when oncoming traffic is waiting - just in case the lights have been rephased. So I edged forward from the white line, arriving at the intersection about 3-4 seconds after the light had turned green, when whoooosh!!! A car travelling from right to left ran his red light and passed through at about 35mph, missing me by about 2-3ft. I stomped on my brake, and even at my slow speed, triggered the ABS. I paused and got the number of the offending car as it receded into the distance on my left. This is an honest account - not a troll! If I had pulled away at a normal sort of speed, I might have been T-boned - on my side. So I was a bit pissed off about this incident. Maybe we should have a joint prayer thread. (OK, that was a troll)

I thought about reporting it to the police when I got home, as in those situations it's no surprise if the car is stolen. In the end I didn't. The police wouldn't have done anything. What do you think, Mav?
