Title: F4U-4s in WWII...
Post by: 1K3 on August 17, 2004, 07:04:22 PM
Did F4U-4s get a chance to enter carrier service or they are just stuck at US Navy shores in late WWII?

Only reference I could find was to Marine Ace, Captain Ken Walsh scoring his last kill in an F4U4 over Okinawa in June of 45 while with VMF-222.

All I know that Captain Kenneth A. Walsh was fly F4U-4 BuNo 80879 and his 21st kill was on June 25. 1945, he shot down a kamikaze over northern Okinawa whilst serving with VMF-222.

Some US Navy pilots like Lcdr. Tommy Blackburn, also flow an F4U-4 and he was first to landing on USS Midway Carrier with his F4U-4.

Also, Major Gregory Boyington flow F4U-4, but he discharge later.

Delivered to the USN in Nov 44 and saw action for the 1st time (CV based) in April 1945 off Okinawa. They saw action from CVs from April 45-August 45, from Okinawa to the Home Islands.

The real question is did the F4U-4C get in combat in WW2.

The real question is does it MATTER if the F4U-4C made it into combat, because I'll buy HiTech's GPS if he'll bring one in the game  :D

I was thinking that F4U-4B did see the combat in WW2, but wasn't too sure and also wasn't too sure about F4U-4C see the combat in WW2 also.

Total Built:  297 ( F4U-4B + F4U-4C )

If the F4U-4B anc C ever get modeled in AH (and I doubt they ever will), I believe they will quickly become the most widely used perk ride in the game.

Oh yeah....that would replace F4U-4 Perk and F4U-4 probably will be a free ride!  :D

I notice that F4U-4B can carry Tiny Tim rockets, which it more powerful than HVAR one and it could be widely again used perk ride in the game like Red Tail said.

Then again, I have been searching about F4U-4B and what it said:  This Machine did not take part in WWII, but it was used with success in the Korean Conflict.  That probably same for F4U-4C also.

Yep!  VMFA-312 F4U-4 shot down a MiG-15, but was damage by another MiG-15 and lthe pilot(Capt. Jess G. Folmar) had to bailed out, because too risky to ditching his F4U-4.

Vought F4U-4B

4 x 20mm - Mounted in each wings - 964 rounds of ammo
2 x 1000Ibs Bomb
8 x 5 in HVAR Rockets
8 x 11.5 in Tiny Tim Rockets on wing root pylons

Vought F4U-4C

4 x 20mm - Mounted in each wings - 964 rounds of ammo
2 x 1000Ibs Bomb
8 x 5 in HVAR ROckets
8 x 11.5 in Tiny Tim Rockets on wings root pylons

They are same specifications as F4U-4, but unlike F4U-4, Both B and C carry cannon and tiny tim rockets.

F4U4B did not see service in WW2. IIRC Hitech did model the 4B in Warbrids until this info came out.

A few items.

1. I am sure that two Tiny tims was the limit.
2. All F4U-4's built were built and delivered in 1944 or 1945 at the latest including all F4U-4B/C's. The only question is did they see combat.
3. The F4U-4B/C had the M3 20mil like the Tempest. Even more powerful than the C-Hog.

Americas 100,000's lists only 9 kills for all F4U-4's for the war, and that they only saw action from Airfields at(On) Okinawa at the very end of the Battle for Okinawa.
