I am 30 years old, played games my whole
life, this game is way to much to even try
to figure out, I have played more hours than anything else i've done the last 3 days. Now I am gonna give up, I have died countless times, shot down one plane, wasted 3 days of my life i will never get back. I am curious how many hours most of you sat in front of your computer to learn how to play this. Enjoy your game I'm going outside!!!!!!!

LMAO .. welcome the the real drug of life... you'll be back!
they don't call it aces High for nothing
some tips:
read all the threads you can in here (the help forum), use the help file in your start menu's Aces High folder, read the whole thing, practice offline taking off and landing, online go to the training arena and find a trainer, in the Main arena dont be afraid to ask for help (but dont use ALL CAPS).
good luck and hope you stay.

Well let see I think I played like the first 24 hours straight. Didnt get my first A2A kill until like after a week or 2. Oh You'll be back.

IIIIIIIGOOOOORRRR
Took me forever. The trick is to find someone you like to fly with, and learn from them.
Shoot me an email if you want to wing sometime. (Email in the profile works well enough).
In answer to your question, it took me years to suck less at air combat in Airwarrior. But even so, there was always something else to do. Aces High is the same way. Take a break, take a tank, take a buff. Just mix it up now and again.

First Goducks
Did you try to hook up with a trainer in the Training arena?
billj69@btinet.net
Email me if interested. I can show you the path, but you still have to walk it.
Also http://www.netaces.org is probably the single best site for anyone wanting to learn to fly Aces High.
Yes be aware this "game" is addicting. It becomes a way of life more than a game.
Its not for everyone, and you can't master it in 3 days, 3 weeks or even 3 months.
3 years its possible with lots of work
& reading.
The learning curve is very steep at the begining, but its doable with a bit of help.

Bout an hour a day for six months....

I've been here for about 5 months or so. At first I spent 4-6 hours at a time taking off then getting shot down. I can fly further now but still have no shooting skills. Now I fly a couple hours a night. I doubt anyone can walk into this game and start "killing" right off the bat. I have been a flight simulator fan for years and am a pilot (and have flown aerobatics extensivley). It didn't help when I got here (except I could land!) . Good Luck and at least hang out for the full 2 week trail and get some help in the traing arena.
Peace

Goducks,
I was 29 when I played my first online WWII combat sim (Warbirds.) Played it non-stop for a full weekend, and then countless hours afterwards. That was almost 10 years ago.
After a three-four year break I'm back at AH, once again addicted, and I basically still suck compared to many many MANY players, to most of them I am cannon fodder.
I too am a pilot in real life. The only advantage that gives you is what LtPillur said, you can take off and land.
But hey, it's still fun and eventually you be able to make some kills. But like Ghosth said it's a lot of work and you need to learn a lot. A lot about combat manuevers, relative aircraft performance, and the abilities (stregths and weaknesses) of each of the aircraft.
I'd suggest you pick one or two to start and learn their abilities inside and out.
A great source of information about ACM and fighter tactics can be found in Robert L Shaw's "Fighter Combat: Tactics and Manuevering" (http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?userid=yR4prys9Wg&isbn=0870210599&itm=2)
ISBN:0870210599
You don't need to read the whole thing, just the Guns only combat and manuever sections.
I think you'll find it as enlightening as AH is addicting.

Ya, you pretty much have to have "no-life" to play this game.
It takes countless hours to learn what it takes to be effective.
Fortunately, I HAVE no life. I am still bad at this game, but I have the time to learn. So, ya, if you do have a life.. go outside.
This isn't an arcade game.

Hmmmm.....
Guess my story is a bit different. I started way back when in Air Warrior. There were alot less people in the arena back then (maybe 100 or so). Luckily for me I ran into the only guy flying (most likely) who was worse than me (some guy named Oopsey or somesuch). Anyway, I beat him like a drum for hours and it gave me the confidence to go on to be what I am today:D

hehe :D
YUP...
I actually had been flying for a few years before he showed up. Used to just beat the snot out of him...of course now I can't even get him to break a sweat:( .
I always laugh when people get so upset with him, regardless of what else you think of him the boy worked his way up from the bottom...he was as bad as anyone I ever ran into...to one of the better sticks I've ever seen.
-
lol no-one is ever going to call Shane anything but oopsy from now on!
-
He's always been Oopsy to me! :) We had some great times in AW with me often gunning his B17 in some rather unusual flights.... :D

I am curious how many hours most of you sat in front of your computer to learn how to play this.
If I told you, you would cry. Lets just say that the number of all nighters has long been countless.
The best way to really learn ACM is in the DA. The Training Arena is also great. I've always found the 1v1 "preset" thing very helpful. And again, if I told you how many hours I've spent in there in the past you'd cry.
This is by no means an easy game to learn. It takes lots and lots of doing to do right. Many mistakes, lots of dying, lots of paying attention and also lots of time. I should also mention dedication since that applies here nicely.
I would encourage you not to give up. I think its obvious that you have an intrest in this game and what it has to offer.
It looks like Ghost is attempting to help you out and get you hooked up with a trainer from AH. If you aren't in the training arena and need some help give me a shout. My email is below, just click on my handle and presto, email. :)
Im not a trainer but I could offer you some assistance if you wish.
Best of luck to you.

Back when you could kill people in the TA, i spent the full 2 week trial in there to figure out the basics, prob spent afew hours each night of that 2 weeks.
then got an account and went into the MA, took me week or so to be able to stay alive in there, and another week or so to actually get kills and return to base.
after about 2 years or so, im still learning new things but the game is enjoyable now:D

Try Crimson Skys that might be more to your liking.
