Title: thermodynamics question.. warming water
Post by: rabbidrabbit on August 20, 2004, 03:12:50 PM
Someone has got to know most of this off the top of their  head.  Root question.. how many calories does it take to warm a 10 once cup of refridgerator cold water (lets say 40 degrees F) to body temp.. 98.6 F

Anyone want to take a crack at it?

my brain only has room for drinks tonight so a quiz would have to fight a titanic battle with the alcohol... the alcohol would win

Do you mean "small" or "large" calories?

1 small calorie = amout of energy to heat 1 gram of water 1 deg celsius?  (a large calorie (food) is 1000 small calories)

Right?  ...  ok

10 ounces = 284grams

98.6F - 40F = 58.6 deg F  (14.8 deg C)

284 grams of water raised 14.8C deg.  hmmmm.....

284 * 14.8 maybe?

3967 "small calories" or about 4 large calories

So to warm up that Fridge cold beer in your stomach would take a whole 4 Calories.

This is all pure SWAG!

lolol Drifter, in that case we could all lose weight by drinking a glass of cold water. I think terror has it right.
