Are your frames set to limited (45 or 60) or unlimited?
Video resolution too high maybe?
Latest ATI drivers, DirectX 9.0b?
Scanned for viruses?
Background junk services shut down?
All I can think of atm.

Download and run a program like 3dMark2003 or 3dMark2001SE.
Benchmark your system then use the online database to compare your rig to similar systems using the same GPU and CPU. Pay
attention to the memory speeds as it is an indication of an overclocked rig. Match your system to as many in the database as possible and see if your scores fall in line.
If they don't - you have a driver issue.
If they do - hmmm I'll have to think about that one.
I suspect the former.
-
The drivers that come with a card are almost always not the ones you want to use because they are old and do not have improvements/bug fixes later drivers do.
-
Please let us know if you get this fixed. I have a similar issue on a friend's rig, an ATI card too.

Are you using the video option that allows textures to be loaded the vid card memory? Your card has enough memory to handle the 512 size textures.

wel after sending skuzzy a dxdiag report..It showed i have 2 sound cards in..SB live and my Intel MObo .one...
is it easy to shut off my Mobos?...and how?
-
There is usually an option to disable the onboard sound somewhere in your bios.

Next..where do i find this benchmark thing..and what do i do with it..is it liek running plingplotter?..pretty easy?
Im getting to a point where thsi is taking too much time...

Get something like WCPUID to find excact model of your "mobo"
http://hp.vector.co.jp/authors/VA002374/src/download.html
Then go here:
http://www.asus.com/products/mb/mbindex.htm
Click on your "mobo", click again on left side menu item "Download", then select "Manual",
find "Your MoBo User's manual english" (not French), take 10 minutes time to read, and you'll be all set to fiddle with BIOS...
-
most mobo let you get into bios buy pressing the delete key during bootup. once in there look for integrated periphials.
turn off on board sound and legacy sound. hit escape key and save changes to exit. BE CAREFUL.

Just read in the latest edition of PC Gamer magazine's hardware section that the latest ATI cards will clamp down the AGP slot on the motherboard if the BIOS is older.
I think you guys are moving in the right direction.
Newer ATI cards + older motherboards = slow video

to be fair a 9600pro isnt THAT good. Ram doesnt = performance. a 9700pro with 128mb by your idea of performance would be rubbish, but its the fact the core and ram is faster, not how big the ram is.

yes but it doesnt have the SPEED to do 512k textures...yes it has the space to store them but the important thing is how fast it can draw them.
