This reminds me how dark Siberia looked when I flew over it when comming back from Japan. totaly different from the rest of the world (x'cept for the sea of course...)

You can't expect to see the light where noone lives... You can see railway lines through Siberia on this image. Even BAM (north of Baikal lake) is visible! Frankly speaking I am surprised by the lights that are relatively dense East of Urals...
For me the most interesting part of this image is North Korea. It's dark not because they don't have elecricity but because they turn of the light simultaneously...

That is not a recent picture, see the date of 2002? Still pretty cool even after seeing it 100 times though. You can clearly see which parts of the globe have a thriving economy.

"The above image is actually a composite of hundreds of pictures made by the orbiting DMSP satellites." That might be the source of so much light?

According to that map, South Korea is the island just west of Japan.
I've seen one more detailed that just showed North vs South Korea. I understand Siberia not having any lights, but not a populated portion of land such as North Korea.
