Amazing Grace
Star Spangled Banner (National Anthem for you DemoCraps)
Jim Croce's I Got a Name........
:aok
-
funny you mention Jim Croce the day I decided to quit a great job and move away from san jose, CA. I heard "new york is not my home" on the radio on the way home from work.
Went to my apt, packed up the jeep, and headed back to Arizona unemployed.
There's a country song called "my best friend" gets me emotional.
I tear up every time I hear "taps" on a bugle/trumpet.

One of my earliest memories (about 3 and a half, maybe four) is playing soccer in the back yard, the radio playing on the sundeck. Whatever song that was on got interuppted by the news that Jim Croce just went down in a plane crash. And I did cry... I was a huge fan of the guy.
I went back a few months ago and gave his stuff another listen, and it still stands the test of time. Good stuff.

Aaron Neville's "I bid you goodnight"
"Lay down my dear Brother, lay down and take your rest
I want to lay your head upon your Savior's breast
I love you, but Jesus loves you best
I bid you goodnight, goodnight, goodnight "

I honestly had no clue who he was till I heard that song mentioned above. I like alot of his stuff now. That was a bad/big day for me. Funny the emotions a song can bring out.....especially when they are tied to a significant event in your life.

Cassandra Wilson - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry
This one should come with razorblades. Don't listen to this in the dark while drinking straight bourbon. Or...maybe that's when you should listen to it ;)

America the Beautiful.. sung by Brother Ray
Proud to Be an American
Bridge Over Troubled Waters
Amazing Grace - Judy Collins did it best although the instrumental version with bagpipes is good too.
Send in the Clowns
Time in a Bottle
too many to mention... I'm a sucker for that crap.
-
Cassandra Wilson?, I thought it was Hank.
Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome I could cry...
I've never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind the clouds
To hide its face and cry...
Did you ever see a robin weep?
When leaves begin to die
Like me he's lost the will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cry...
The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry...

He's my Son- Mark Shultz
It was played at my cousin's funeral and its always gotten to me every time i hear it.
http://www.foxy-productions.com/Music/hesmyson.wav
I'm down on my knees again tonight
I'm hoping this prayer will turn out right
See there is a boy that needs your help
I've done all that I can do myself
His mother is tired
I'm sure you can understand
Each night as he sleeps
She goes in to hold his hand
And she tries not to cry
As the tears fill her eyes
Can you hear me?
Am I getting through tonight?
Can you see him?
Can you make him feel all right?
If you can hear me
Let me take his place somehow
See, he's not just anyone
He's my son
Sometimes late at night I watch him sleep
I dream of the boy he'd like to be
I try to be strong and see him through
But God who he needs right now is You
Let him grow old
Live life without fear
What would I be
Living without him here
He's so tired and he's scared
Let him know that You're there
Can you hear me?
Am I getting through tonight?
Can you see him?
Can you make him feel all right?
If you can hear me
Let me take his place somehow
See, he's not just anyone
He's my son
Can you hear me?
Can you see him?
Please don't leave him
He's my son.

If you have ever been divorced you'll know exactly what he means:
I'm So Happy I Can't Stop Crying
Seven weeks have passed now since she left me,
She shows her face to ask me how I am
She says the kids are fine and that they miss me
Maybe I could come and baby-sit sometime
She says, "Are you O.K.? I was worried about you.
Can you forgive me? I hope that you'll be happy."
I'm so happy that I can't stop crying
I'm so happy I'm laughing through my tears
I saw a friend of mine. He said,
"I was worried about you
I heard she had another man,
I wondered how you felt about it?"
I'm so happy that I can't stop crying
I'm so happy I'm laughing through my tears
Saw my lawyer, Mr. Good News
He got me joint custody and legal separation
I'm so happy that I can't stop crying
I'm laughing through my tears.
I'm laughing through my tears
I took a walk alone last night.
I looked up at the stars
To try and find an answer in my life
I chose a star for me. I chose a star for him
I chose two stars for my kids and one star for my wife
Something made me smile. Something seemed to ease the pain
Something about the universe and how it's all connected
The park is full of Sunday fathers and melted ice cream
We try to do the best within the given time
A kid should be with his mother,
Everybody knows that
What can a father do but baby-sit sometimes?
I saw that friend of mine, he said,
"You look different somehow."
I said, "Everybody's got to leave the darkness sometime."
I'm so happy that I can't stop crying
I'm laughing through my tears
I'm laughing through my tears
I'm so happy that I can't stop crying
I'm laughing through my tears
I'm laughing through my tears

Pillar of Davidson - Live
The Best man in my Wedding (moved out to Tigard, OR for his job) was in a coma 1 year before our wedding (car accident). He overcame all of the obstacles and roadblocks to stand at my wedding (I was present when he came out of the then drug induced coma). We told him afterwards had he NOT made it, noone would have stood in his place. I've known him for 17 years.
Saw Live do this song in 2000, it was closure, but it still waters me up when I hear it.
"I'll be along son with medicine supposed to, designed to make you high. I'll be along son with words for a feeling and all I've discovered"

Chapin's tune makes me think of my almost 3 year old son (Sept. 8th) with a sense of joy. I took my wife (then fiance) to see The Black Watch. It was great, I am part Scottish.

yup gotta admit I've never been dry eyed watching a fireman/policman's funeral when the bagpipes play amazing grace.
Somone did mention Taps on the bugle;)

Seriously, I was very moved during a Funeral detail when they played Taps with an echoing bugle in the distance. The guys had it timed perfectly.

Had a fiance once named Anna - this song hits way too close to home :)
Counting Crows...
Anna Begins
My friend assures me "it's all or nothing"
I am not worried- I am not overly concerned
My friend implores me " for one time only,
make an exception." I am not not worried
Wrap her up in a package of lies
Send her off to a coconut island
I am not worried - I am not overly concerned
with the status of my emotions
"oh", She says, "were changing."
But were always changing
It does not bother me to say this isn't love
Because if you don't want to talk about it then it isn't love
and I guess I'm going to have to live that
but, I'm sure there's something in a shade of gray
or something in between
and I can always change my name if that's what you mean
My friend assures me "it's all or nothing`
But I am not really worried
I am not overly concerned
You try to tell your self the things you try tell your self to make
yourself forget
to make your self forget
I am not worried
"If it's love" she said, "then were gonna have to think about the
consequences"
She can't stop shaking and I can t stop touching her and.....
This time when kindness falls like rain
It washes her away and Anna begins to change her mind
"these seconds when I'm shaking leave me shuddering
for days" she says.
And I'm not ready for this sort of thing
But I'm not gonna break
And I'm not going to worry about it anymore
I'm not gonna bend. And I'm not gonna break and
I'm not gonna worry about it anymore
It seems like I should say "as long as this is love..."
But it's not all that easy so maybe I should just
snap her up in a butterfly net-
Pin her down on a photograph album
I am not worried
I've done this sort of thing before
But then I start to think about the consequences
Because I don't get no sleep in a quiet room and...
The time when kindness falls like rain
It washes me away and Anna begins change my mind
And every time she sneezes I believe it's love
and oh lord.... I'm not ready for this sort of thing
She s talking in her sleep-it s keeping me awake
And Anna begins to toss and turn
And every word is nonsense but I understand and and
oh lord. I m not ready for this sort of thing
Her kindness bangs a gong
It's moving me along and Anna begins to fade away
It s chasing me away.
She dissappears, and oh lord I'm not ready for this sort of thing

Here's one that has not been mentioned yet.
You know it, but you might not be able to place it...
Same Auld Lang Syne
Dan Fogelberg
1981
Epic Records
Met my old lover in the grocery store,
The snow was falling Christmas Eve.
I stole behind her in the frozen foods,
And I touched her on the sleeve.
She didn't recognize the face at first,
But then her eyes flew open wide.
She went to hug me and she spilled her purse,
And we laughed until we cried.
We took her groceries to the checkout stand,
The food was totalled up and bagged.
We stood there lost in our embarrassment,
As the conversation dragged.
We went to have ourselves a drink or two,
But couldn't find an open bar.
We bought a six-pack at the liquor store,
And we drank it in her car.
We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to now.
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness,
But neither one knew how.
She said she'd married her an architect,
Who kept her warm and safe and dry,
She would have liked to say she loved the man,
But she didn't like to lie.
I said the years had been a friend to her,
And that her eyes were still as blue.
But in those eyes I wasn't sure if I saw,
Doubt or gratitude.
She said she saw me in the record stores,
And that I must be doing well.
I said the audience was heavenly,
But the traveling was hell.
We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to now.
And tried to reach beyond the emptiness,
But neither one knew how.
We drank a toast to innocence,
We drank a toast to time.
Reliving in our eloquence,
Another 'Auld Lang Syne'...
The beer was empty and our tongues were tired,
And running out of things to say.
She gave a kiss to me as I got out,
And I watched her drive away.
Just for a moment I was back at school,
And felt that old familiar pain...
And as I turned to make my way back home,
The snow turned into rain....

"Billy Don't be a Hero"
I well up, start grabbin for the tissues and begin blubbering every time
The marchin' band came down along Main Street
The soldier-blues fell in behind
I looked across and there I saw Billy
Waiting to go and join the line
And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood, I saw she was cryin'
And through her tears I heard her say
"Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life"
"Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife"
And as he started to go she said "Billy, keep your head lo-o-ow"
"Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me"
The soldier-blues were trapped on a hillside
The battle raging all around
The sergeant cried "We've got to hang on, boys"
"We got to hold this piece a'ground"
"I need a volunteer to ride up"
"And bring us back some extra men"
And Billy's hand was up in a moment
Forgettin' all the words she said
She said
"Billy, don't be a hero, don't be a fool with your life"
"Billy, don't be a hero, come back and make me your wife"
And as he started to go she said "Billy, keep your head lo-o-ow"
"Billy, don't be a hero, come back to me"
I heard his fiancee got a letter
That told how Billy died that day
The letter said that he was a hero
She should be proud he died that way
I heard she threw that letter away
(Ballard of the Green Beret too!)

Third Eye Blind
Wounded
The guy who put his hands on you
Has got nothing to do with me
And the bruises that you feel will heal
And I hope you'll come around
'Cuz we're missing you
And you used to speak so easy
Now you're afraid to talk to me
It's like walking with the wounded
Carrying that weight way too far
Concrete pull you down so hard
Out there with the wounded
We're missing you
Well I never claimed to understand
What happens after dark
But my fingers catch the sparks
At the thought of touching you
When you're wounded
Let me break it down till I force the issue
We miss your face and you know I wish you
Would come back down to the Dalva Bar
You tell them, "that's just my battle scar"
I want to kiss you
And knock 'em down like we used to
You're the marigold
Till you're walking down shaking that bellybutton again
And then you walk on baby, walk on, you walk on
On and on
You're an angel in the pit
With her hands in the air
And we're missing you
Now it's fall and your shoulders get tighter
Nervous flicks on the lighter, boots
Your pissed off poets, your women's groups
And the friends with you, we should've known this fool
Well, I guess we missed the mark
But still my fingers catch the sparks
At the thought of them touching you
And now you're wounded
Let me break it down till I force the issue
You never come around and you know we miss you
Well nobody took your pride away
I said, "That's something people say"
Back down the bully to the back of the bus
'Cuz it's time for them to be scared of us
Till you're yelling, how we living?
'Cuz you got the ball
Then you rock on baby, rock on, you rock on
On and on
You're a summertime hottie
With her socks in the air
You're screaming, "I don't care
Baby, I don't care
No!"
You say you don't know
You say you don't know (You're a marigold)
All I know is we're missing you
You say you don't know
You say you don't know (You're a marigold)
All I know is we're missing you

There are songs that disturb me (Polly by Nirvanna, Johnny Hit & Run Pauline by X), songs that make me melancholy (American Pie, Box of Rain by the Dead, The Night they Tore ole' Dixie Down by The Band, Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald) but none that break me up. There are plenty of movies, but somehow no songs really connect in that way at that level.

Some songs bring up emotions or feelings from another time, a sad time, and a few mentioned do that to me.
Cat's in the cradle - my two sons are now young men, but it makes me reflect on lost opportunities we could have done more together.
When I'm Gone by 3 Doors Down - I remember seeing the video on TV, then becoming familiar with the song about the same time my oldest son deployed to Afghanistan. It was a sad time for his Mother and me, and it reminds me of the worry and emotions we went through.

LOL westy.
I do get misty eyed at movies -- the end of saving Private Ryan, even Beaches (LOL! There's one that won't get put back in the box now that it's out :) ). But songs just don't do it. It's odd because music does move me otherwise. Something like Polly will disturb me so much I have to change the radio station or skip the track.

Thanks. Finally got it. Was a good monologue. And when that harmonica kicks in...
This song was like my anthem....
I went out with this girl for 6 years... Highschool and after. I knocked her up eventually... and my world was closing in fast. She aborted, and I got the hell out of, well, the country... to shake things up. And I went to college. Otherwise my life was going to become the River... just exactly like it.
My dad used to say things about me and the military. Never bothered me. But this song sure did... It scared the watermelon out of me. Way more than anything my old man could say. It was like Bruce was reading my future, and because of it I got to choose a different path.
