It needs panel Lines.  It looks a little bit too clean as well.  Maybe ad some weathering and exhaust?

The stars look a little blurry to me, maybe because it is a 256X256 skin? In Photoshop you just set it in the "canvas size" area. It will prolly look bad if you stretch it though, you may have to do much of the work over again after resizing it :(

Was there an all white yak? no wait, that was a 109. Not much of a history buff, were their many other yak paint schemes?

OK, heres another update its now a 1024x1024. I'm still making more details, I made the tiger on it a higher quality, i made some of the panal lines thinner and i fixed the 36 and USSR markings. I still wanna fix up the wings.

Nice Job!

I like the effect.

A few points, for consideration...

The topside grays should probably be somewhat lighter.

There are no panel lines on the wings or aft fuselage. ( the airplane is covered in plywood on the -9U, and sanded smooth.
The -9P, post-war is metal. Earlier -9s have a fabric covered aft fuselage, a left over from the -7 series ).

The underside is that wierd Russian blue, not gray.
( see the museum photo you posted )

reference http://vvs.hobbyvista.com/

for a great deal of information, including color matching and camoflage in use at various periods.

Also,

Soviet Air Force Fighter Colours 1941-45 by Erik A. Pilawskii (© Author, 1994-2003, Classic Publications, Ltd.).

For a great deal more.

Many paintings, books and decal sheets have misinterpreted the colors, including the modern Russian museums.  US Museums, excluding the Smithsonian, don't generally do any better on US aircraft, by the way.

Overall, I really like it...  I've got 3 Yak-9s in progress, it's great to have more...

Thebest...

Man, the arguments I've had over correct colors!

I've seen good friends not talk to one another for a year after an argument about US Navy Sea Blue ( used on WWII carriers ).

The only thing you can rely on is a color chip from the best source you can find.  How good are those? Use your best judgement, it's equal part fanaticism and art.

Color photos are no good and paintings are certainly no good for real accuracy.  Add 'scale factor' ( the fact that colors look different on different size models ) and you've got a real mess!

Look at the paining of the 'Normandie-Niemen' -9T earlier in the thread.  It comes from a model kit.  Look at the rivets.  Hm, no rivets on the real airplane, tail or wings.  Accurate? Nope. Colors? Good question! Look at the VVS site at the really strange Yak-7 with the 3-color looping pattern and tell me definitively that this scheme is not possible. Ha!

For instance, the airplane below is drawn from the color chips I got from the VVS web site I recommended.

This is a documented camo scheme.  Looks wierd, eh?

How about this one for wierd:

Also a documented scheme with colors accurate from the chips...

Do your best research,  go with your best guess and make one you like.  I'm a fanatic model-builder with a predjudice for accuracy, but I can still appreciate good effort on the part of others.

Keep up the good work!  Document well enough to get HTC to accept it, I'll guarantee I'll fly it...

Sometime in the next couple of days I'll scan some 3-view drawings to give you a guide, but I've got 3 sets of those that don't agree.  I ultimately looked at photographs for a guide ( and to get a accurate count of rivets and Dzus fittings - the thingies that hold the cowlings on ).  Accurate counts of rivets!?!?  I *told* you I was a fanatic!

UPdate:
Fixed the panal lines on the fuselage
took panal lines and rivits off the aft and the wings (to make it look like wood)
fixed weathering mess up on wings (where the 2 camo colors meet)

I still need to fix some of the minor details on the wings and make everything nicer looking. Other than that the hard work is done!;) :p:lol

No rivets are visible.  The rudder, ailerons and elevators are fabic covered.  If you get a good photo you can see how to shade them.

My three sets of line-drawings all show different patterns... I took my best guess.  The original skin does not match the line drawings, either and required some artistic license to get a fit.

I'll post the patterns later tonight when I get home.

See if these help.

(http://members.cox.net/gunfighterp51/AHPics/Top surface shading.jpg)

(http://members.cox.net/gunfighterp51/AHPics/Lower and side shading.jpg)

In PS6
Create a layer.
User the polygonal lasso to create areas for the fabric depressions. Save the mask, you may need it later.
Select a color slightly lighter and one slightly darker than the base color.
Set the airbrush tool to about 1/2 the size of the open area and about 30-50% density.
Airbrush the edges of the areas to provide shading.

Easy, Eh?

A couple of other observations.  The Russians did not mark the upper sides of their aircraft.

I really like the shading you've done on the paint, the variations show up nicely and the nose-art is well done also.

Keep it up!

Title: The Green Yak

Best, try this for a better view. Offgame, go on the runway and turn you aircraft either North or South. Then change the "time" ingame to 10:00 or 14:00 if you want a shot of the fuse AND wings. Set it for 8:30 or nine - 15:00 or 16:30 if you want a shot of the fuse.

Lightens stuff QUITE a bit and gives you a real good look at what you have painted. You can look at one side, rotate it around, change the time and look at the other.

...I can do it in my sleep :D

Hi The Best1

The yak pictured seems to be finished in a perfect rendition of colours used on Yaks  produced from spring  44 onwards..........

Colours are dark Olive AMT12, grey AMT 11 and the std sky blue under belly AMT7.

We can see the exact camo in plan and both elevations on Page 183 fig 13 of "Soviet Airforce Fighter colours 1941 to 1945 /..Eric Pilawskii ISBN 1 903223 30 X"

It was the std instructed camo for all VVS single seat fighters although many "did their own thing in the field".

Panel lines can be seen on page 178.

I cannot find any reference to which VVS regiment Yak 9U White 36 was allocated although the tiger motiff does seem familiar and presently I cannot remember why.

HTC may request that the skin to reflect that used by a Yak 9U in a specific  VVS regiment.

You may want to contact the museum and aske them why they chose white 36 and the tiger motiff.

Some detail stuff.

You seem to have removed all upper wing markings which is correct.

The tail star should be smaller (you can see this on the original aircraft you pictured.)

The top of the fuselage numeric is in line with the  horizontal line of the star your numeric seems to be bigger and higher.

All Yak 9U's in action during late 44 were exclusively with 163 IAP which was with the 3rd air army over East Prussia and the Baltic States. However from Jan 45 the Yak9 U was being distributed widely to existing Yak regiments.

The type of script used for the numerics is not uncommon.

You may want to give some thought to drawing panel lines in a darkened version of the colour of the local camo with occasioinal lighter relief behind them to generate some paint wear. (but what do I know my art work sucks beside kweassa's)

If I come across direct references to this Tiger motiff I'll post it here.
