Skuzzy,
Our pal, Billy G has now made it so these 2 services have to be turned on in order to use the Windows Update Site. I still have Auto-updates turned off; though.
"Automatic Updates (this is one nasty program) "
"Background Intelligent Transfer Service"
Edit: I do have FSAutoStart set to shut these down when AH launches and turn them back on after exit.

I think that only applies to XP users who have installed SP2. I am still researching it though.
It would be a shame to have to have those services running as they can seriously hamper any online game.
If you have to have "Background Intelligient Transfers" on, then that also assumes you have to have QoS enabled in the connection as well. Talk about taking control of a users PC.

I am using SP1. When I went to Win Update Site a couple days ago to check for updates, it asked if I wanted to install the new update app. After it installed, I clicked on this option -
"Custom Install: High Priority and Optional Updates for Your Computer
Choose this to scan for optional, critical, and security updates your computer needs, choose from all the updates on the site, and review updates before downloading."
I got an error message with a list of Services required to be running in order to get updates.
However, I am able to get manual updates with Qos diabled -
and the other two are temporarily disabled in AH by FSAutoStart.
-
Really? Well that is just peachy.

I should explain. The Background Intelligent Transfer service usues QoS, which is reality reserves a portion of bandwidth for Windows to use.
If QoS is not running, the BIT will use whatever it can. So, in essence, you need QoS running, IF you have BIT enabled or things will get really chunky.

skuzzy,
what does it mean when you have the error
-3mainGR or something like that.. please enlighten me.. thats all i could remember of it
-
this is the one
initialization faild with -3
mainGR3D_FAILED-5

Ace, if you are running Version 2.00 Patch 9, then manually download the update patch and install it. It is located here: http://downloads.hitechcreations.com/AH2008T20010.EXE

Skuzzy,
Thanks for the info. "Services" is now pinned to my Start Menu next to "Windows Update" so I can turn Auto-Update and BITS on/off when I check for updates. I am going to wait awhile before installing SP2.

I use dialup on Earthlink from western NY state. As long as I check my connection to make sure I'm not linking thru 'sprintlink' I seem to be ok. Of course I'd assume some dialup ISPs are 'better' than others, imo.
