Title: More sound woes + FPS problem

New drivers fixed the total lack of sound following the engine start up - but now the sound cuts in and out seemingly at random.

When it goes, a click of the flaps or a few rounds from the guns will bring the sound back.

Also - the FPS drops to zero seemingly at random too.  The screen just freezes for 2-3 seconds at a time.

Huge furballs as well as open water - no difference.

Read all I could and did the recommended updates and changes that are within my meager tech ability.

Any other ideas?

Have you checked the interrupts to see if any are being shared with the sound card and/or video card?

I use Win98se and I can check my IRQs by right clicking 'My Computer' and selecting properties, then select Device Manager, right click on 'Computer' and hit properties again. It gives IRQ, I/O, DMA and memory info.
Edit- oops I didnt see those IRQs you listed.

do you use both ide controllers? probably

how about your com port 1? anything hooked to that serial port? if not disable it in the bios

you need to try to get the usb controller and the video card from sharing irq 16

you also need to try to get the sound card away from the other usb controller as they share irq 18

do you have 4 usb ports? do you use more than two? if so, siable the other two in the bios. I suggest you do that anyway and go get a powered usb hub for about $25 at best buy

once you isolate ur usb irq, you can probably get the one that is sharing with the sound card to be the one you use by moving the santa cruz to another slot as it is possible the other usb irq that shares with ur vcard is wired that way and only hope there is to disable that pair of ports

what is the make/model number of your motherboard so we can look up its irq assignments?

Ok - I have no idea what any of you said... gonna have to read it again tomorrow morning - maybe itll make sense.

PS:  Concerning the USB things - Can I just unplug USB devices and get the desired result?

I assume you can have a USB controller sharing something if no usb equipment is using that hub.  I could be wrong and would like an expert to confirm it though. I have both my USB hubs on same IRQ as my sound card but I have no USB equipment at all.
I never bothered to ask though. I think it IS a good question.

If nothing connected to a USB hub, will it use any resources and hinder an IRQ?  When I tried disabling them in Dev Manager my computer wouldn't shut down by itself, it would hang and sit waiting for something, I assume the USB shutting down.

I'll try an explanation with my situation.
I have no USB equipment but I do have USB hubs active on my computer. They are on the same IRQ as my sound card. Now usually you don't want anything sharing IRQs especially with the video or sound cards because you want maximum performance from them, ie: using their IRQ when ever they want to. If I did have a USB thing doing stuff, like a joystick, the joystick would conflict and delay response from the sound card or vice versa.
My assumption is that if nothing is on my USB hub, it will never request an interrupt that would hinder the performance of my sound card. If I did have something on it they would have to squabble over who uses it when.
Clear as mud now, right?

Ok... I understand that... but I cant even read what I posted above without getting a headache (the system info).

Can you tell whats conflicting and what I need to change?

IE:  "Unplug this device... this is conflicting with this card... etc, etc."

Have I given enough info for someone to tell whats wrong, or no?

IRQ 16 is used by your video card and a USB hub. IRQ 18 is used by your sound card and a USB hub. Based on my understanding unplugging the USB devices 'should' let the video and sound card use their specific IRQs without having to fight a USB device for it. It would be easy to unplug the USB stuff to check, again based on my understanding of it and I could definately be wrong.
If it doesn't you might need to move some cards around on different motherboard slots. If that is too much, it might be worth getting a computer savy friend to help.
Computers are so varied and different you can get in trouble listening to someone say do this do that without being there and seeing exactly whats going on.
I know that the slot next to the AGP slot, where the video card is, should usually be kept empty so the video card doesn't have to share it's IRQ.
[ I'm even reaching my technical guru-ness on this one. ]
