Title: The small things.
Post by: Nash on August 25, 2004, 08:56:36 PM
Question:

What are the small things that happen every single day that make you happy?

My work is a walk away... and I always take the same route. This one tree-lined street has this building... now condos. 2-story, built in the fifties. It's perfectly designed and I like walking past it.

I also pass by this really old church. Always makes me reflect on spirituality.

When I get to work, I pass by this neat chick named Erin. I just shout "URN" when I come in, and she always says "Whaaaat?"

I get a coffee and go to my office, close the door, and crank the stereo. Lately it's been Weezer. I get a kick out of the fact that it's not yet even nine o'clock in the morning, but Weezer is rockin' out and I'm about to spend the rest of the day basically making pictures. So I reflect on the kind of pictures I want to make today.

Lately, when not going out with clients, my lunch consists of grabbing a sandwich from Subway and eating it under a tree in this great park which is basically an island surrounded by rivers on both sides. Just a 5 minute walk away. I eat it while reading the paper, then walk around a bit and then go back to work.

I like bs'n with the guys at work... They say things like c*nt and ******* and they're pretty much like highschool kids but waaaay older. Cracks me up.

The building I work in is about, like, 50 stories tall and there's all sorts of companies that have offices there. So there's lotsa people. Out of all of them, there's about 3-4 really hot chicks. I don't see them all the time, and never see all of them in the same day, but... It's cool when I make a sighting. It's not like I'm gonna be brave enough to actually approach them (what would I say?) but whatever.... it adds color.

Uhm.... My evenings kind of suck.

I recently moved into a new city. And I don't have any friends here outside of work. I've always made friends quickly, but it's different. It's like, the people I think I could relate to, I don't want anything to do with anymore. And the people that I can't relate to, well, I can't relate to them. So I'm in a bit of a self-imposed exile.

But... that's okay for now. Kinda what I need.

Back to the good stuff. I work out five times a week, read a lot, BS with you guys. On weekends it's fishing, fishing, fishing. I love it. This winter I'm gonna take up painting in a big way again.

Okay this ended being kind of long. I don't expect the same from you. Just tell us the odd small thing/s that, every day, makes you happy.

My kids, when I walk them to the bus stop every morning and when I greet them in the afternoon.  My dog and my cat follow us and we get  a few minutes alone with no distractions.  I used to leave to go to work before they woke, and got home after they arrived from school.  I don't need the money that bad, I realize now.

mine would also have to be my kids.  They are up in the morning when I go to work just barely waking up.

My son:  (2)"daddy you go to work?  I took big nap at night night"

My daughter: (5) "daddy have a good day at work, call if you need anything"

When I come home I hear screams of DADDY'S HOME DADDY'S HOMEDADDY'S HOMEDADDY'S HOMEDADDY'S HOME.  Then they do the "DADDY'S HOME Dance"

I go to the fridge for my after work beer and head to the back porch w/ my wife to watch the kids run around the yard trying to impress me.

Other than that....My day is a really good one when I helped a jet fly because of my skills that wasnt predicted to fly.  Or when I help a young Airman who's lost his way help him find it.

other than that a nice calm day when the sun is rising driving to work in my jeep with the top off is a pretty good experience.

Mine starts much the same way....except when I'm at work I'm rolling in between 7:30-8:00. I enjoy the fact that the students that will graduate from my class will help to direct that jet in combat and keep it same from collisions while at the same time directing it into harms way against our enemies, then helping it find it's way back home. And the satisfaction that I am helping to shape the Navy by teaching these yound minds a new skill.

At the end of the day (around noon or 1pm for us instructors) My wife and I take my 2 boys to the park to play or we'll kick the ball around the grass outside our apartment. Then after we put the boys to bed we garb a few beer and sit on our porch and enjoy the evening weather together.

For me it is rain. I love the rain. To bad Cali does not get enough.

I love watching the C-130s and on occasion Harriers fly into Moffett field.

I love reading and writing.

My goofy black lab is great. Damn good dog.

Cooking something new is always fun.

Shooting and doing well on the range.

I used to love cleaning guns, now it is just work.. lol

I used to love drawing, but I suck at it now, I think I lost the patience.

Seeing a cool muscle car and giving the owner a thumbs up or talking to him is fun.

My family mostly - unplanned get togethers, building or reapairing something. I find I get more statisfation out of physical labor than with mental labor. I really love to trudge inside dead tired. Good for the soul I think.

Neat topic

Some days I chuckle over it...some days I groan about it, roll over and try to ignore it.

Im sure everyone has a pet that likes to wake you...be it for breakfast or to go potty

I've got one fat cat (appropriately named "Pudgey") that, like clockwork, every morning at 7am, sticks his cold nose on mine to remind me he's hungry and wants breakfast.  Sometimes I just get up and get it over with.

And others, I just try to ignore him...which only gets him purring longer and then he starts with the nose tapping with his paw.  "hey dude, wake up!".

If I roll over, he simply waddles around to the other side and continues his stance.  If I shove him off the bed, he regroups a few minutes later and bounces back up.

Damn.  There's no snooze button on a cat that wants breakfast.

The trip I take to go to the office everyday is nice, Lux is a very "rural" area, with large sand stone buildings, parks and pedestrian alleys.

Small Things......

Watching the sun come up over the Sandias as I drive to work,

My 15 year old boy finally comprehending out that finshing an unplesent task is easier than draging it out all day....

making a perfect attack that crushes a kid 28 years younger than me and doing it with one sword stroke .....

seeing the book I've been waiting for finally show up.......

finshing a home project and having it "work" just like the plans...

doing a complex electronic alingment perfect the first time through....

seeing my youngest put someone else first above her own wants...

little stuff, dosen't happen too often, but often enough.

At the moment i must say that my favorite thing is sitting on the couch with Mia on my arms in the morning just before my gf wakes up. I love those quiet moments before we go wake the mommy and the day starts for real :)

I don't go to work anymore now. That in itself is kinda nice. ;)

Best thing in the last couple of days was the lighting ceremony at Mt. Rushmore and helping participate in the securing of the Colors. Very simple but moving ceremony. Rushmore at night is simply awesome.

Being able to simply wake up, look at a map and decide where we'll go that day / week and what we'll do is pretty special.

Simply waking up and knowing the wife is there beside me after spending so many sleepless nights dealling with her cancer and related surgeries is a real upper as well.
