Title: 60mm fan or 80mm
Post by: jetb123 on August 26, 2004, 03:43:47 AM
Alright I have a choice between a 60mm fan that will fit in the back of my case. So it will blow out. My case already came with a side fan that sucks in. Should I buy a 60mm fan tat blow out the back. Our a 80mm the going to suck in from the front? I will be oredering computer tommrow just trying to get things right.

you want to match air coming in to the case to air going out of the case. This is measured in CFM (cubic ft per min.)
You need to find out what the side fan blowing in is producing (air moving) and get a fan that mayches that!

Now i saw in one of your other post you mentioned OC your PC dont do it till you have read every thing there is to know and do it one little step at a time, And if you do you better get a better Heat sink and fan than the stock one that comes with a XP 2500 barton! Besides i think the stepping on all Bartons is now locked you will only be able to OC the FSB to 200 or so!

Boxboy, the first (and only) XP Barton I bought had the muliplier unlocked.  Just FYI.  They do exist.

Runnin a 2500 barton at 333 right now.

Heat seems to be and issue with my system,  got 3 fans bringin air in and 2 (powersupply fan counts as one) blowing it out.  Also has holes cut in oppisite side from side fan.  Got the side panel off and a external fan blowin on everything now :(

Doesn't make sense cause my son has identical system but it's runnin as much as 10 degree's cooler with the same stock fans and stock heatsink?????

Gettin right around 50C runnin AH now.  Used to go up to 68C  :(

Replaced stock heatsink with a swiftech MCX462-V.  Using a standard 80mm fan on heatsink.

Note: my ATI9800 pro fried and the replacement is otw.  Have to run my old 9000 pro for now.  Heat seems to follow me around on all my systems :(

from about week 39-41 last year(2003) they started locking them because far to many 2500s could be sold as 3000/3200s by remarkers.

the new locks on these bartons are IMPOSSIBLE to unlock from what i remember, unless something has changed in the last 6 months.

it must be a REALLY old cpu if its unlocked.

unless you mean you just bumpped the FSB up...FSB cant be locked, but a 2500 is locked at 11, unless you brought a mobile 2500?

11?  mine is at 1833?  says max is over 2250???

FSB is either 166 or 333 with my Asus A7V8X-X.

Did see someone somewhere with a jumper set up for AMD that unlocked chip if it was locked.  Fit over about 4 pins and stuck out the side of the cpu.

Says it's an AMD Athlon  XP2500+.

Maybe I don't understand your 11 statement?

I really can't remember when I bought mine, but it was the same time the 9800XT came out.  I got mine from Newegg and it was unlocked.  I tried a lot ot combos but got the best performance with the multiplier at 11 and the FSB at 200.

11x166 = 1833

its locked at 11

and no, these 2500s are HARD locked now, NOTHING unlocks them, its not like the old days of joining L1 bridges

The one I bought just a couple of weeks ago, was a 2800+.  It was unlocked and is happily a 3200+ now.

i said 2500 ;)

thats the problem range, its the CHEAPest Barton out there, but clocks to 3400, hell even 3800 in most cases (ratings before anyone tells me thats impossible). From what i hear its the only one thats locked right now, and your cpu proves that :aok

ok so then its only the XP2500 that are locked(multiplier locked only). i guess that explains it better!  Most people were buying them up cause they were cheap and would still clock fairly high!

My misunderstanding Overlag.  I was not sure you meant all AMD's CPU's or that one specific CPU.  AMD is a new world for me, so be gentle.

Different.  I am just playing about with it.  I find it easier to mess up than a P4 system.

AMD will probably be all I do in the near future.  Once the Northwood P4 is gone, I will no longer be able to advise anyone to get a P4.  The Prescott's are just terrible.

Yup, I did a poor job researching my CPU upgrade and bought a 2.8 Prescott thinking "hey if 512k cache is good, 1k is better right?".

The thing runs so hot at STOCK speed I have to put a oscillating fan blowing into the open case to keep it cool and that is with a Swiftech heatsink and Artic Silver 5 paste. Worst buy I ever made. I'll probably buy a Northwood just so I can close the damn case and remove the house fan.

The 2.8Ghz Northwood will, generally speaking, outperform the 2.8Ghz Prescott too.  Better get it while you can.  Intel is in a hurry to kill it.
