Me: "A coke"

Interesting how it changes at the Oregon - California border. Terrain and people are very similar up there.

There are two ways to say it:
1) You can call it Pop
2) Or you can say it another way and be wrong!
:D

We tend to use "soda" in the Navy as a neutral term..and you can see it's "soda" in the tidewater area (biggest Naval consentration in the world)
But back home it's all COKE !
-
I say Soda, but everyone in my area says Pop.
-
That chart is wrong for Fremont CA, we call it Coke around these parts. As it should be called everywhere.
Pepsi is nasty pisswater. it is the bud of softdrinks.
-
called a soft drink where i'm from.
-
Its really quite simple.
Soda is a generic term for all flavored carbonated drinks.
Coke(tm) , Pepsi, Dr Pepper, Orange Crush, Mountain Dew
Are all types of Soda.
Coke is Coca-Cola. Period end of story.
Coke is NOT Pepsi, Orange Crush or any of the other aformentioned brands.
a Pop is frozen flavored sugar water on a stick.
OR something you do to a cherr..... oh nevermind
Actually Pop is another generic term for soda.
Typically called Pop by hicks because of the sound the old style bottles used to make when you "popped" the cap off
Plus its much easier to say since most only have one tooth
And to say "soda" would sound like "Thoda"
so they say "Pop"
:)
-
Just looking at the map.
Never heard of ordering an "other"
Anyone ever go into a diner and say "can I have a glass of "other" please
-

i was too lazy to type something exactly like that all out.
"other" sodawater, sodapop, fountain drink, carbonated beverage... have heard all those used in odd arse places.

My grandfather used to call the belly washers.
Haven't thought about that in years.

In Boston it's called Tonic or was when I lived there.
-
In Texas it's all Coke. There are different flavors, Dr.Pepper, Orange, Sprite, ect., but you must specify or you will get Coke-Cola. That's what my Granddad taught me when I was a wee lad.
-
In Houston, it's Coke for Cola.
In Pittsburgh, Pop is for Cola, and Soda is restricted to the unflavored carbonated water.
-
pepsi sucks ass
coke r0xx0rs!
-
here's a weird one. My friends dad is from argentina and he calls his beer "barley pop" anyone ever hear that?
-
Barley Pop? Isn't that beer?

lol reminds me of a funny story ; a friend's Dad took a case of Cheerwine with him on a trip to NY City, knowing Yankees ain't got none. he got pulled for 2 mph over speed limit in NY. cop arrested him for hauling the case of Cheerwine. told him hauling alcohol is illegal or something like that. guy tried to tell the cops but they threw him in jail overnight. next day cops felt like total fools they were. locking a guy up overnight for hauling a case of softdrinks. :rofl :rofl :rofl

OK, so yeah, I live in Arkansas, so maybe this wont be much of a suprise, but ....True Story:
I was workin with a kid just out of high school here, and it was a hot day, I says," I'm gonna grab a soda....you want a Coke?"
He reaches for change and says, "yeah"
So, jokin around I ask, "what kind?"
He looks up, says,
"Dr. Pepper"
:p
Oh, a map! Yeah, I'm in one of those 80-100% coke counties
-
Thats odd... when I lived in Chicago it was always "Coke."
Only heard "pop" once in a blue moon.

I'm required by contract to tell you that Dr. Pepper is the true Nectar of the Gods. They bottle pure magic, for instance they turned my little TV into a 65" Behemoth with one twist of its cap.
:D

It's funny when people order a (whatever alcohol) and soda and they wanted coke. OK, wherever you are from in the world, in a bar......SODA is soda water and COKE is a cola type beverage.
Also, Coke is now legally a proper generic term. How many of you have been to a restaurant and ordered a coke only to have the server say, "is pepsi ok?"
Coke is now like Xerox, Kleenex, and Crescent wrench.
Dad.............."Son hand me the Crescent wrench"
SON.............."Dad, all I have is a generic adjustable wrench, is that ok?"

So, what happens when you been to places in the US ranging from Georgia to Washington state - and you always only heard Soda-Pop?
Does that make the entire map completely ****ing useless and retarded, and all of you for arguing over it the same? Yes, yes it does.

Totally, yeah.... This map suprised the hell out of me. I've spent time in almost every state, and they all say "soda".
Seeing all that blue on the map indicating "pop" doesn't add up...
-
I'm from California and I have come to know "pop" or "coke" as the generic terms.
-
Do you know what would be cool though?
Take this map into Photoshop.
Overlay it onto the map showing the Rep/Dem 2000 election results.
Then take all that, and overlay it onto the map showing the satelite shot of areas lit up at night.
And draw your own conclusions.
-
lol
I love you Nash :)

Unflavored Soda is Seltzer water
Unless your in a bar
Didnt Dr pepper used to be made from all the leftover soda flavors?
I seem to remember hearingt ht when I was a kid back in the 60's.
Also seemed a bit of a crapshoot as to what it would taste more like Cola or Cherry whenever you bought one
-
I love you too Nuke.

tapa...I thaught the Generic term (for copyright purposes) was Cola....I allways hear/see those adds "try a bicadi and cola"
I allways thaught it wierd because in a bar you order a bicardi and coke.....
Reminds me of super troopers
Farve: And I'd like a liter of cola
Clerk: a what?
Farve: A liter of cola!
Clerk (over intercom): do we have liters of cola?
-
Might as well do county colors for lunch and dinner and supper too (hint: Christ and the disciples did not have The Last Dinner).

ahh nope.
i actually did a research paper on Dr Pepper in college LOL.
it was first made in 1885, in waco texas. there is a debate between coke and dr pepper as to who was the first... but they generally are the same age. the oldest soda brand in the usa.
dr pepper recipe has 23 different flavors in it, all "secret". the recipe has been mostly untouched from the begining.

Same here. Although living in Arizona I have also been known to call it a soda. Never a pop.

hahahahahaha!!!
SODA. BLUBBLER = WATER FOUNTAIN. WHITE SODA = Sprite/7up. I said "I'll have a white soda please," in Indianapolis last year and received a funny look.
-
Pop I can understand. I'd never use it. But coke for all other flavors!?!?!? Are you ****ing retarded!?!?!?. Must be... they're from the south. :D
-
ITS A SODA
-
Down here in the westren we say POP
-
The funny thing is that this chart is true. My brother that lived in madison calls it "pop". I live 60 miles away and we call it soda
-
Madison is a huge mix due to it being such a large college town. You'll get soda, pop, 'lets smoke', etc... Actually, don't think I've ever heard pop out there :)
-
The elite call it 'soft drink'
The middle class call it 'coke'
The urbanites call it 'pop'
-
Lol, thats great. Someone actually took the time to study this?
I used to live in the pop part of PA, and moved to the soda part. There is a guy a couple years older than me from the same hometown that moved here also.
His first job in this area was for the beer distributor. While making deliveries, he goes in to this place of business, and says "I have your pop out here". The lady was completely confused as to who he was and why he had her father outside lol.
-
Lies! All lies! They don't want you to know that coke is Soylent Brown!!
We are doomed! Doooomed!
Daniel
-
And thus begins the Soda-Pop-Soft drink war. :rofl :rofl
-
Anybody else drinking C2? Not bad.
-
Notice, southern Florida, proving once again that south Florida is not in the south.
BTW, here it's all coke. If you want be be specific, you oder a "Co-coaler"
And the waitress says, "Thanks honey."
-
I had the C2...tastes just like Pepsi. So, you want to know the proper names? I was a bartender for many years, in many parts of the country. Here is the proper usage:
The proper generic term is "soft drink." Soda is soda water. Tonic is tonic water. Pop is not valid. If you order a bacardi and coke, you get a bacardi and coke, unless the bar serves pepsi products, in which case the bartender *must* ask you if a pepsi substitution is acceptable. The same holds true for 7Up/Sprite.
Cola is the generic term for "dark" soft drinks (aka coke, pepsi, rc, etc) with the exception of Dr. Pepper and its substitutes.
To quote Eddie Murphy pretending he's Richard Pryor:
Have a Coke and a smile and stfu :)
-
Come on you neanderthals... Get with the times. Everyone knows its a SODA. I'm not just saying that because I'm from Cali. A grape flavored soda cant be a coke and pop just sounds stupid.
-
How about a nice Hawaiian Punch?
